    Meso-scale FDM material layout design strategies under manufacturability constraints and fracture conditions

    In the manufacturability-driven design (MDD) perspective, manufacturability of the product or system is the most important of the design requirements. In addition to being able to ensure that complex designs (e.g., topology optimization) are manufacturable with a given process or process family, MDD also helps mechanical designers to take advantage of unique process-material effects generated during manufacturing. One of the most recognizable examples of this comes from the scanning-type family of additive manufacturing (AM) processes; the most notable and familiar member of this family is the fused deposition modeling (FDM) or fused filament fabrication (FFF) process. This process works by selectively depositing uniform, approximately isotropic beads or elements of molten thermoplastic material (typically structural engineering plastics) in a series of pre-specified traces to build each layer of the part. There are many interesting 2-D and 3-D mechanical design problems that can be explored by designing the layout of these elements. The resulting structured, hierarchical material (which is both manufacturable and customized layer-by-layer within the limits of the process and material) can be defined as a manufacturing process-driven structured material (MPDSM). This dissertation explores several practical methods for designing these element layouts for 2-D and 3-D meso-scale mechanical problems, focusing ultimately on design-for-fracture. Three different fracture conditions are explored: (1) cases where a crack must be prevented or stopped, (2) cases where the crack must be encouraged or accelerated, and (3) cases where cracks must grow in a simple pre-determined pattern. Several new design tools, including a mapping method for the FDM manufacturability constraints, three major literature reviews, the collection, organization, and analysis of several large (qualitative and quantitative) multi-scale datasets on the fracture behavior of FDM-processed materials, some new experimental equipment, and the refinement of a fast and simple g-code generator based on commercially-available software, were developed and refined to support the design of MPDSMs under fracture conditions. The refined design method and rules were experimentally validated using a series of case studies (involving both design and physical testing of the designs) at the end of the dissertation.     Higher Education’s Effect on Retention: Exploring the Experiences of CPS Caseworkers

    This qualitative research study was an exploration of Child Protective Services (CPS) frontline caseworkers\u27 experiences. The problem investigated was the high number of caseworkers who lacked the knowledge and skills necessary to do their job and the constant turnover of workers within the agency. Although previous researchers have explored many factors that cause caseworker turnover, the research has not focused much on the caseworkers’ perspective. Therefore, this qualitative study explored CPS caseworkers’ opinions and experiences using virtual semistructured interviews. The study specifically focused on the impact that education and training has on job performance and turnover. The study population was CPS caseworkers who had worked in a large urban community in Texas for 2 years or more. The sample included eight caseworkers who had experienced the turnover firsthand. Thematic analysis of the transcripts of the audio-recorded interviews and data coding using NVivo software led to the development of a coding system to identify patterns and common themes. The findings indicated that for caseworkers, hands-on training, gaining experience, unity between caseworkers, social service training, and leadership support may lead to decreased turnover rates and increased job performance. Agency leaders and other professionals in the social service field may consider the findings to improve caseworker retention and organizational outcomes. These improvements could prompt positive change through leadership and policy adjustments designed to support the needs of CPS caseworkers related to education, training, and retention.     Comedians without a Cause: The Politics and Aesthetics of Humour in Dutch Cabaret (1966-2020)

    Comedians play an important role in society and public debate. While comedians have been considered important cultural critics for quite some time, comedy has acquired a new social and political significance in recent years, with humour taking centre stage in political and social debates around issues of identity, social justice, and freedom of speech. To understand the shifting meanings and political implications of humour within a Dutch context, this PhD thesis examines the political and aesthetic workings of humour in the highly popular Dutch cabaret genre, focusing on cabaret performances from the 1960s to the present. The central questions of the thesis are: how do comedians use humour to deliver social critique, and how does their humour resonate with political ideologies? These questions are answered by adopting a cultural studies approach to humour, which is used to analyse Dutch cabaret performances, and by studying related materials such as reviews and media interviews with comedians. This thesis shows that, from the 1960s onwards, Dutch comedians have been considered ‘progressive rebels’ – politically engaged, subversive, and carrying a left-wing political agenda – but that this image is in need of correction. While we tend to look for progressive political messages in the work of comedians who present themselves as being anti-establishment rebels – such as Youp van ‘t Hek, Hans Teeuwen, and Theo Maassen – this thesis demonstrates that their transgressive and provocative humour tends to protect social hierarchies and relationships of power. Moreover, it shows that, paradoxically, both the deliberately moderate and nuanced humour of Wim Kan and Claudia de Breij, and the seemingly past-oriented nostalgia of Alex Klaasen, are more radical and progressive than the transgressive humour of van ‘t Hek, Teeuwen and Maassen. Finally, comedians who present absurdist or deconstructionist forms of humour, such as the early student cabarets, Freek de Jonge, and Micha Wertheim, tend to disassociate themselves from an explicit political engagement. By challenging the dominant image of the Dutch comedian as a ‘progressive rebel,’ this thesis contributes to a better understanding of humour in the present cultural moment, in which humour is often either not taken seriously, or one-sidedly celebrated as being merely pleasurable, innocent, or progressively liberating. In so doing, this thesis concludes, the ‘dark’ and more conservative sides of humour tend to get obscured

    In the past decade, advances in deep learning have resulted in breakthroughs in a variety of areas, including computer vision, natural language understanding, speech recognition, and reinforcement learning. Specialized, high-performing neural architectures are crucial to the success of deep learning in these areas. Neural architecture search (NAS), the process of automating the design of neural architectures for a given task, is an inevitable next step in automating machine learning and has already outpaced the best human-designed architectures on many tasks. In the past few years, research in NAS has been progressing rapidly, with over 1000 papers released since 2020 (Deng and Lindauer, 2021). In this survey, we provide an organized and comprehensive guide to neural architecture search. We give a taxonomy of search spaces, algorithms, and speedup techniques, and we discuss resources such as benchmarks, best practices, other surveys, and open-source libraries

    Chiral active fluids: Odd viscosity, active turbulence, and directed flows of hydrodynamic microrotors

    While the number of publications on rotating active matter has rapidly increased in recent years, studies on purely hydrodynamically interacting rotors on the microscale are still rare, especially from the perspective of particle based hydrodynamic simulations. The work presented here targets to fill this gap. By means of high-performance computer simulations, performed in a highly parallelised fashion on graphics processing units, the dynamics of ensembles of up to 70,000 rotating colloids immersed in an explicit mesoscopic solvent consisting out of up to 30 million fluid particles, are investigated. Some of the results presented in this thesis have been worked out in collaboration with experimentalists, such that the theoretical considerations developed in this thesis are supported by experiments, and vice versa. The studied system, modelled in order to resemble the essential physics of the experimentally realisable system, consists out of rotating magnetic colloidal particles, i.e., (micro-)rotors, rotating in sync to an externally applied magnetic field, where the rotors solely interact via hydrodynamic and steric interactions. Overall, the agreement between simulations and experiments is very good, proving that hydrodynamic interactions play a key role in this and related systems. While already an isolated rotating colloid is driven out of equilibrium, only collections of two or more rotors have experimentally shown to be able to convert the rotational energy input into translational dynamics in an orbital rotating fashion. The rotating colloids inject circular flows into the fluid, such that detailed balance is broken, and it is not a priori known whether equilibrium properties of colloids can be extended to isolated rotating colloids. A joint theoretical and experimental analysis of isolated, pairs, and small groups of hydrodynamically interacting rotors is given in chapter 2. While the translational dynamics of isolated rotors effectively resemble the dynamics of non-rotating colloids, the orbital rotation of pairs of rotors can be described with leading order hydrodynamics and a two-dimensional analogy of Faxén’s law is derived. In chapter 3, a homogeneously distributed ensemble of rotors (bulk) as a realisation of a chiral active fluid is studied and it is explicitly shown computationally and experimentally that it carries odd viscosity. The mutual orbital translation of rotors and an increase of the effective solvent viscosity with rotor density lead to a non-monotonous behaviour of the average translational velocity. Meanwhile, the rotor suspension bears a finite osmotic compressibility resulting from the long-ranged nature of hydrody- namic interactions such that rotational and odd stresses are transmitted through the solvent also at small and intermediate rotor densities. Consequently, density inhomogeneities predicted for chiral active fluids with odd viscosity can be found and allow for an explicit measurement of odd viscosity in simulations and experiments. At intermediate densities, the collective dynamics shows the emergence of multi-scale vortices and chaotic motion which is identified as active turbulence with a self-similar power-law decay in the energy spectrum, showing that the injected energy on the rotor scale is transported to larger scales, similar to the inverse energy cascade of clas- sical two-dimensional turbulence. While either odd viscosity or active turbulence have been reported in chiral active matter previously, the system studied here shows that the emergence of both simultaneously is possible resulting from the osmotic compressibility and hydrodynamic mediation of odd and active stresses. The collective dynamics of colloids rotating out of phase, i.e., where a constant torque instead of a constant angular velocity is applied, is shown to be qualitatively very similar. However, at smaller densities, local density inhomogeneities imply position dependent angular velocities of the rotors resulting from inter-rotor friction. While the friction of a quasi-2D layer of active colloids with the substrate is often not easily modifiable in experiments, the incorporation of substrate friction into the simulation models typically implies a considerable increase in computational effort. In chapter 4, a very efficient way of incorporating the friction with a substrate into a two-dimensional multiparticle collision dynamics solvent is introduced, allowing for an explicit investigation of the influences of substrate on active dynamics. For the rotor fluid, it is explicitly shown that the influence of the substrate friction results in a cutoff of the hydrodynamic interaction length, such that the maximum size of the formed vortices is controlled by the substrate friction, also resulting in a cutoff in the energy spectrum, because energy is taken out of the system at the respective length. These findings are in agreement with the experiments. Since active particles in confinement are known to organise in states of collective dynamics, ensembles of rotationally actuated colloids are studied in circular confinement and in the presence of periodic obstacle lattices in chapters 5 and 6, respectively. The results show that the chaotic active turbulent transport of rotors in suspension can be enhanced and guided resulting from edge flows generated at the boundaries, as has recently been reported for a related chiral active system. The consequent collective rotor dynamics can be regarded as a superposition of active turbulent and imposed flows, leading to on average stationary flows. In contrast to the bulk dynamics, the imposed flows inject additional energy into the system on the long length scales, and the same scaling behaviour of the energy spectrum as in bulk is only obtained if the energy injection scales, due to the mutual generation of rotor translational dynamics throughout the system and the edge flows, are well separated. The combination of edge flow and entropic layering at the boundaries leads to oscillating hydrodynamic stresses and consequently to an oscillating vorticity profile. In the presence of odd viscosity, this consequently leads to non-trivial steady-state density modulations at the boundary, resulting from a balance of osmotic pressure and odd stresses. Relevant for the efficient dispersion and mixing of inert particles on the mesoscale by means of active turbulent mixing powered by rotors, a study of the dynamics of a binary mixture consisting out of rotors and passive particles is presented in chapter 7. Because the rotors are not self-propelled, but the translational dynamics is induced by the surrounding rotors, the passive particles, which do not inject further energy into the system, are transported according to the same mechanism as the rotors. The collective dynamics thus resembles the pure rotor bulk dynamics at the respective density of only rotors. However, since no odd stresses act between the passive particles, only mutual rotor interactions lead to odd stresses leading to the accumulation of rotors in the regions of positive vorticity. This density increase is associated with a pressure increase, which balances the odd stresses acting on the rotors. However, the passive particles are only subject to the accumulation induced pressure increase such that these particles are transported into the areas of low rotor concentration, i.e., the regions of negative vorticity. Under conditions of sustained vortex flow, this results in segregation of both particle types. Since local symmetry breaking can convert injected rotational into translational energy, microswimmers can be constructed out of rotor materials when a suitable breaking of symmetry is kept in the vicinity of a rotor. One hypothetical realisation, i.e., a coupled rotor pair consisting out of two rotors of opposite angular velocity and of fixed distance, termed a birotor, are studied in chapter 8. The birotor pumps the fluid into one direction and consequently translates into the opposite direction, and creates a flow field reminiscent of a source doublet, or sliplet flow field. Fixed in space the birotor might be an interesting realisation of a microfluidic pump. The trans- lational dynamics of a birotor can be mapped onto the active Brownian particle model for single swimmers. However, due to the hydrodynamic interactions among the rotors, the birotor ensemble dynamics do not show the emergence of stable motility induced clustering. The reason for this is the flow created by birotor in small aggregates which effectively pushes further arriving birotors away from small aggregates, which eventually are all dispersed by thermal fluctuations

    Klarnetin staccato tekniğini güçlendirme aşamaları eser çalışmalarıyla uygulanmıştır. Staccato geçişlerini hızlandıracak ritim ve nüans çalışmalarına yer verilmiştir. Çalışmanın en önemli amacı sadece staccato çalışması değil parmak-dilin eş zamanlı uyumunun hassasiyeti üzerinde de durulmasıdır. Staccato çalışmalarını daha verimli hale getirmek için eser çalışmasının içinde etüt çalışmasına da yer verilmiştir. Çalışmaların üzerinde titizlikle durulması staccato çalışmasının ilham verici etkisi ile müzikal kimliğe yeni bir boyut kazandırmıştır. Sekiz özgün eser çalışmasının her aşaması anlatılmıştır. Her aşamanın bir sonraki performans ve tekniği güçlendirmesi esas alınmıştır. Bu çalışmada staccato tekniğinin hangi alanlarda kullanıldığı, nasıl sonuçlar elde edildiği bilgisine yer verilmiştir. Notaların parmak ve dil uyumu ile nasıl şekilleneceği ve nasıl bir çalışma disiplini içinde gerçekleşeceği planlanmıştır. Kamış-nota-diyafram-parmak-dil-nüans ve disiplin kavramlarının staccato tekniğinde ayrılmaz bir bütün olduğu saptanmıştır. Araştırmada literatür taraması yapılarak staccato ile ilgili çalışmalar taranmıştır. Tarama sonucunda klarnet tekniğin de kullanılan staccato eser çalışmasının az olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Metot taramasında da etüt çalışmasının daha çok olduğu saptanmıştır. Böylelikle klarnetin staccato tekniğini hızlandırma ve güçlendirme çalışmaları sunulmuştur. Staccato etüt çalışmaları yapılırken, araya eser çalışmasının girmesi beyni rahatlattığı ve istekliliği daha arttırdığı gözlemlenmiştir. Staccato çalışmasını yaparken doğru bir kamış seçimi üzerinde de durulmuştur. Staccato tekniğini doğru çalışmak için doğru bir kamışın dil hızını arttırdığı saptanmıştır. Doğru bir kamış seçimi kamıştan rahat ses çıkmasına bağlıdır. Kamış, dil atma gücünü vermiyorsa daha doğru bir kamış seçiminin yapılması gerekliliği vurgulanmıştır. Staccato çalışmalarında baştan sona bir eseri yorumlamak zor olabilir. Bu açıdan çalışma, verilen müzikal nüanslara uymanın, dil atış performansını rahatlattığını ortaya koymuştur. Gelecek nesillere edinilen bilgi ve birikimlerin aktarılması ve geliştirici olması teşvik edilmiştir. Çıkacak eserlerin nasıl çözüleceği, staccato tekniğinin nasıl üstesinden gelinebileceği anlatılmıştır. Staccato tekniğinin daha kısa sürede çözüme kavuşturulması amaç edinilmiştir. Parmakların yerlerini öğrettiğimiz kadar belleğimize de çalışmaların kaydedilmesi önemlidir. Gösterilen azmin ve sabrın sonucu olarak ortaya çıkan yapıt başarıyı daha da yukarı seviyelere çıkaracaktır

    Bayesian Optimization with Conformal Prediction Sets

    Bayesian optimization is a coherent, ubiquitous approach to decision-making under uncertainty, with applications including multi-arm bandits, active learning, and black-box optimization. Bayesian optimization selects decisions (i.e. objective function queries) with maximal expected utility with respect to the posterior distribution of a Bayesian model, which quantifies reducible, epistemic uncertainty about query outcomes. In practice, subjectively implausible outcomes can occur regularly for two reasons: 1) model misspecification and 2) covariate shift. Conformal prediction is an uncertainty quantification method with coverage guarantees even for misspecified models and a simple mechanism to correct for covariate shift. We propose conformal Bayesian optimization, which directs queries towards regions of search space where the model predictions have guaranteed validity, and investigate its behavior on a suite of black-box optimization tasks and tabular ranking tasks.     Facteurs associés à la motivation au changement chez des adolescentes hébergées en centre de réadaptation

    L’objectif général de cette thèse consiste à mieux comprendre le lien entre des caractéristiques personnelles de 175 adolescentes hébergées en centre de réadaptation, des éléments de leur contexte de placement et leur motivation au changement de comportements. La motivation au changement a été mesurée à deux reprises, à l’admission lors d’un nouveau placement et trois mois plus tard, à partir de la version francophone du Readiness Ruler (Miller et Rollnick, 1991). Les facteurs associés incluent des difficultés intériorisées et extériorisées, des comportements à risque ainsi que des éléments du contexte d’hébergement (relations avec le personnel éducateur et avec les pairs, pratiques éducatives des personnes intervenantes). Des analyses corrélationnelles et des équations structurelles ont permis d’établir que les adolescentes qui présentent des signes de détresse (ex. : symptômes de dépression, d’anxiété, stress post-traumatique) ont moins confiance en leur capacité de changer leurs comportements. Également, des analyses de classes latentes ont établi trois profils de la motivation au changement au cours des trois premiers moins du placement (détérioration, stabilité, consolidation de la motivation). Des analyses de type 3-step ont montré que lorsque les adolescentes considèrent que leurs relations avec les éducateurs sont difficiles ou que ces derniers déploient des pratiques éducatives qu’elles estiment injustes ou inéquitables, elles sont caractérisées davantage par un profil de détérioration de leur motivation au changement. En contrepartie, plus ces relations avec les éducateurs ou ces pratiques éducatives sont jugées satisfaisantes, plus les adolescentes affichent un profil de consolidation de leur motivation au changement. Ces résultats mettent d’abord en lumière que le profil clinique des adolescentes semble être un élément crucial pour comprendre leur motivation au changement, à cet égard, à l’entrée en centre de réadaptation une attention particulière devrait être portée aux adolescentes présentant des signes de détresse. Se dégage aussi de cette thèse, le rôle primordial du personnel éducateur et des pratiques éducatives pour favoriser la motivation au changement

    Bridging technology and educational psychology: an exploration of individual differences in technology-assisted language learning within an Algerian EFL setting

    The implementation of technology in language learning and teaching has a great influence onthe teaching and learning process as a whole and its impact on the learners’ psychological state seems of paramount significance, since it could be either an aid or a barrier to students’ academic performance. This thesis therefore explores individual learner differences in technology-assisted language learning (TALL) and when using educational technologies in higher education within an Algerian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) setting. Although I initially intended to investigate the relationship between TALL and certain affective variables mainly motivation, anxiety, self-confidence, and learning styles inside the classroom, the collection and analysis of data shifted my focus to a holistic view of individual learner differences in TALL environments and when using educational technologies within and beyond the classroom. In an attempt to bridge technology and educational psychology, this ethnographic case study considers the nature of the impact of technology integration in language teaching and learning on the psychology of individual language learners inside and outside the classroom. The study considers the reality constructed by participants and reveals multiple and distinctive views about the relationship between the use of educational technologies in higher education and individual learner differences. It took place in a university in the north-west of Algeria and involved 27 main and secondary student and teacher participants. It consisted of focus-group discussions, follow-up discussions, teachers’ interviews, learners’ diaries, observation, and field notes. It was initially conducted within the classroom but gradually expanded to other settings outside the classroom depending on the availability of participants, their actions, and activities. The study indicates that the impact of technology integration in EFL learning on individual learner differences is both complex and dynamic. It is complex in the sense that it is shown in multiple aspects and reflected on the students and their differences. In addition to various positive and different negative influences of different technology uses and the different psychological reactions among students to the same technology scenario, the study reveals the unrecognised different manifestations of similar psychological traits in the same ELT technology scenario. It is also dynamic since it is characterised by constant change according to contextual approaches to and practical realities of technology integration in language teaching and learning in the setting, including discrepancies between students’ attitudes and teacher’ actions, mismatches between technological experiences inside and outside the classroom, local concerns and generalised beliefs about TALL in the context, and the rapid and unplanned shift to online educational delivery during the Covid-19 pandemic situation. The study may therefore be of interest, not only to Algerian teachers and students, but also to academics and institutions in other contexts through considering the complex and dynamic impact of TALL and technology integration at higher education on individual differences, and to academics in similar low-resource contexts by undertaking a context approach to technology integration
