The availability of third-party apps is among the key success factors for software ecosystems: The users benefit from more features and innovation speed, while third-party solution vendors can leverage the platform to create successful offerings. However, this requires a certain decoupling of engineering activities of the different parties not achieved for distributed control systems, yet. While late and dynamic integration of third-party components would be required, resulting control systems must provide high reliability regarding real-time requirements, which leads to integration complexity. Closing this gap would particularly contribute to the vision of software-defined manufacturing, where an ecosystem of modern IT-based control system components could lead to faster innovations due to their higher abstraction and availability of various frameworks. Therefore, this thesis addresses the research question: How we can use modern IT technologies and enable independent evolution and easy third-party integration of software components in distributed control systems, where deterministic end-to-end reactivity is required, and especially, how can we apply distributed changes to such systems consistently and reactively during operation? This thesis describes the challenges and related approaches in detail and points out that existing approaches do not fully address our research question. To tackle this gap, a formal specification of a runtime platform concept is presented in conjunction with a model-based engineering approach. The engineering approach decouples the engineering steps of component definition, integration, and deployment. The runtime platform supports this approach by isolating the components, while still offering predictable end-to-end real-time behavior. Independent evolution of software components is supported through a concept for synchronous reconfiguration during full operation, i.e., dynamic orchestration of components. Time-critical state transfer is supported, too, and can lead to bounded quality degradation, at most. The reconfiguration planning is supported by analysis concepts, including simulation of a formally specified system and reconfiguration, and analyzing potential quality degradation with the evolving dataflow graph (EDFG) method. A platform-specific realization of the concepts, the real-time container architecture, is described as a reference implementation. The model and the prototype are evaluated regarding their feasibility and applicability of the concepts by two case studies. The first case study is a minimalistic distributed control system used in different setups with different component variants and reconfiguration plans to compare the model and the prototype and to gather runtime statistics. The second case study is a smart factory showcase system with more challenging application components and interface technologies. The conclusion is that the concepts are feasible and applicable, even though the concepts and the prototype still need to be worked on in future -- for example, to reach shorter cycle times.

The steady increase in digitalization propelled by the Internet of Things (IoT) has led to a deluge of generated data at unprecedented pace. Thereby, the promise to realize data-driven decision-making is a major innovation driver in a myriad of industries. Based on the widely used event processing paradigm, event-driven applications allow to analyze data in the form of event streams in order to extract relevant information in a timely manner. Most recently, graphical flow-based approaches in no-code event processing systems have been introduced to significantly lower technological entry barriers. This empowers non-technical citizen technologists to create event-driven applications comprised of multiple interconnected event-driven processing services. Still, today’s event-driven applications are focused on centralized cloud deployments that come with inevitable drawbacks, especially in the context of IoT scenarios that require fast results, are limited by the available bandwidth, or are bound by the regulations in terms of privacy and security. Despite recent advances in the area of fog computing which mitigate these shortcomings by extending the cloud and moving certain processing closer to the event source, these approaches are hardly established in existing systems. Inherent fog computing characteristics, especially the heterogeneity of resources alongside novel application management demands, particularly the aspects of geo-distribution and dynamic adaptation, pose challenges that are currently insufficiently addressed and hinder the transition to a next generation of no-code event processing systems. The contributions of this thesis enable citizen technologists to manage event-driven applications in heterogeneous fog infrastructures along the application life cycle. Therefore, an approach for a holistic application management is proposed which abstracts citizen technologists from underlying technicalities. This allows to evolve present event processing systems and advances the democratization of event-driven application management in fog computing. Individual contributions of this thesis are summarized as follows: 1. A model, manifested in a geo-distributed system architecture, to semantically describe characteristics specific to node resources, event-driven applications and their management to blend application-centric and infrastructure-centric realms. 2. Concepts for geo-distributed deployment and operation of event-driven applications alongside strategies for flexible event stream management. 3. A methodology to support the evolution of event-driven applications including methods to dynamically reconfigure, migrate and offload individual event-driven processing services at run-time. The contributions are introduced, applied and evaluated along two scenarios from the manufacturing and logistics domain

Architectural Enhancements for Data Transport in Datacenter Systems

Datacenter systems run myriad applications, which frequently communicate with each other and/or Input/Output (I/O) devices—including network adapters, storage devices, and accelerators. Due to the growing speed of I/O devices and the emergence of microservice-based programming models, the I/O software stacks have become a critical factor in end-to-end communication performance. As such, I/O software stacks have been evolving rapidly in recent years. Datacenters rely on fast, efficient “Software Data Planes”, which orchestrate data transfer between applications and I/O devices. The goal of this dissertation is to enhance the performance, efficiency, and scalability of software data planes by diagnosing their existing issues and addressing them through hardware-software solutions. In the first step, I characterize challenges of modern software data planes, which bypass the operating system kernel to avoid associated overheads. Since traditional interrupts and system calls cannot be delivered to user code without kernel assistance, kernel-bypass data planes use spinning cores on I/O queues to identify work/data arrival. Spin-polling obviously wastes CPU cycles on checking empty queues; however, I show that it entails even more drawbacks: (1) Full-tilt spinning cores perform more (useless) polling work when there is less work pending in the queues. (2) Spin-polling scales poorly with the number of polled queues due to processor cache capacity constraints, especially when traffic is unbalanced. (3) Spin-polling also scales poorly with the number of cores due to the overhead of polling and operation rate limits. (4) Whereas shared queues can mitigate load imbalance and head-of-line blocking, synchronization overheads of spinning on them limit their potential benefits. Next, I propose a notification accelerator, dubbed HyperPlane, which replaces spin-polling in software data planes. Design principles of HyperPlane are: (1) not iterating on empty I/O queues to find work/data in ready ones, (2) blocking/halting when all queues are empty rather than spinning fruitlessly, and (3) allowing multiple cores to efficiently monitor a shared set of queues. These principles lead to queue scalability, work proportionality, and enjoying theoretical merits of shared queues. HyperPlane is realized with a programming model front-end and a hardware microarchitecture back-end. Evaluation of HyperPlane shows its significant advantage in terms of throughput, average/tail latency, and energy efficiency over a state-of-the-art spin-polling-based software data plane, with very small power and area overheads. Finally, I focus on the data transfer aspect in software data planes. Cache misses incurred by accessing I/O data are a major bottleneck in software data planes. Despite considerable efforts put into delivering I/O data directly to the last-level cache, some access latency is still exposed. Cores cannot prefetch such data to nearer caches in today's systems because of the complex access pattern of data buffers and the lack of an appropriate notification mechanism that can trigger the prefetch operations. As such, I propose HyperData, a data transfer accelerator based on targeted prefetching. HyperData prefetches exact (rather than predicted) data buffers (or a required subset to avoid cache pollution) to the L1 cache of the consumer core at the right time. Prefetching can be done for both core-peripheral and core-core communications. HyperData's prefetcher is programmable and supports various queue formats—namely, direct (regular), indirect (Virtio), and multi-consumer queues. I show that with a minor overhead, HyperData effectively hides data access latency in software data planes, thereby improving both application- and system-level performance and efficiency.PHDComputer Science & EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.
