Model-based Aeroservoelastic Design and Load Alleviation of Large Wind Turbine Blades
This paper presents an aeroservoelastic modeling approach for dynamic load alleviation
in large wind turbines with trailing-edge aerodynamic surfaces. The tower, potentially on a
moving base, and the rotating blades are modeled using geometrically non-linear composite
beams, which are linearized around reference conditions with arbitrarily-large structural
displacements. Time-domain aerodynamics are given by a linearized 3-D unsteady vortexlattice
method and the resulting dynamic aeroelastic model is written in a state-space
formulation suitable for model reductions and control synthesis. A linear model of a single
blade is used to design a Linear-Quadratic-Gaussian regulator on its root-bending moments,
which is finally shown to provide load reductions of about 20% in closed-loop on the full
wind turbine non-linear aeroelastic model
Robust Control Synthesis for Gust Load Alleviation from Large Aeroelastic Models with Relaxation of Spatial Discretisation
This paper introduces a methodology for the design of gust load control systems directly from large aeroelastic models with relaxation of spatial discretisation. A convenient state-space representation of the vortex-panel unsteady aerodynamics suitable for control synthesis is presented. This allows a full understanding of the dynamics of the linearized vortex aeroelastic model and is suitable for control system design. Through the use of robust controllers, large reductions in loading could be achieved. Comparisons are also made between robust and classical control methods. It further demonstrates that controllers synthesized from models of coarse spatial discretizations and of an order of magnitude smaller in size were capable of rejecting disturbances on fully converged models, with performances comparable to expensive higher order controllers developed from full models
Loads Control Aerodynamic in Offshore Wind Turbines
Due to the increase of rotor size in horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) during the past 25 years in order to achieve higher power output, all wind turbine components and blades in particular, have to withstand higher structural loads. This upscaling problem could be solved by applying technologies capable of reducing aerodynamic loads the rotor has to withstand, either with passive or active control solutions. These control devices and techniques can reduce the fatigue load upon the blades up to 40% and therefore less maintenance is needed, resulting in an important money savings for the wind farm manager. This project consists in a study of load control techniques for offshore wind turbines from an aerodynamic and aeroelastic point of view, with the aim to assess a cost effective, robust and reliable solution which could operate maintenance free in quite hostile environments. The first part of this study involves 2D and 3D aerodynamic and aeroelastic simulations to validate the computational model with experimental data and to analyze the interaction between the fluid and the structure. The second part of this study is an assessment of the unsteady aerodynamic loads produced by a wind gust over the blades and to verify how a trailing edge flap would influence the aerodynamic control parameters for the selected wind turbine blade
Load mitigation for wind turbines by a passive aeroelastic device
This paper conducts a preliminary investigation of a novel passive concept for the mitigation of loads on wind turbines. The device, which can be implemented as a flap or a pitching blade tip, moves passively in response to blade vibrations, opposing them, thereby yielding an attenuation of loads. In comparison to active load mitigation devices, such as active flaps, this solution has the advantage of not requiring sensors nor actuators, resulting in a particularly simple implementation, with potential benefits in manufacturing and maintenance costs, as well as in reliability and availability.The paper first describes the novel passive device, here implemented by means of a flap, highlighting its main characteristics. A proof of concept of the new idea is then given by a simulation study conducted with the combination of a sectional model of the flap and an aeroservoelastic multibody model of the rest of the machine. Results, obtained for a 10. MW wind turbine, indicate the ability of the passive flap in attenuating blade vibrations in a significant frequency range, which in turn yield a reduced fatigue damage to the structure without noticeable effects in terms of power production and ultimate loads
