Is agile project management applicable to construction?
This paper briefly summarises the evolution of Agile Project Management (APM) and differentiates it from lean and agile production and ‘leagile’ construction. The significant benefits being realized through employment of APM within the information systems industry are stated. The characteristics of APM are explored, including: philosophy, organizational attitudes and practices, planning, execution and control and learning. Finally, APM is subjectively assessed as to its potential contribution to the pre-design, design and construction phases.
In conclusion, it is assessed that APM offers considerable potential for application in predesign and design but that there are significant hurdles to its adoption in the actual construction phase. Should these be overcome, APM offers benefits well beyond any individual project
The role of supply chain integration in achieving competitive advantage: A study of UK automobile manufacturers
The competitive nature of the global automobile industry has resulted in a battle for efficiency and consistency in supply chain management (SCM). For manufacturers, the diversified network of suppliers represents more than just a production system; it is a strategic asset that must be managed, evaluated, and revised in order to attain competitive advantage. One capability that has become an increasingly essential means of alignment and assessment is supply chain integration (SCI). Through such practices, manufacturers create informational capital that is inimitable, yet transferrable, allowing suppliers to participate in a mutually-beneficial system of performance-centred outcomes. From cost reduction to time improvements to quality control, the benefits of SCI extend throughout the supply chain lifecycle, providing firms with improved predictability, flexibility, and responsiveness. Yet in spite of such benefits, key limitations including exposure to risks, supplier failures, or changing competitive conditions may expose manufacturers to a vulnerable position that can severely impact value and performance. The current study summarizes the perspectives and predictions of managers within the automobile industry in the UK, highlighting a dynamic model of interdependency and interpolation that embraces SCI as a strategic resource. Full commitment to integration is critical to achieving improved outcomes and performance; therefore, firms seeking to integrate throughout their extended supply chain must be willing to embrace a less centralized locus of control
Incremental Consistency Checking in Delta-oriented UML-Models for Automation Systems
Automation systems exist in many variants and may evolve over time in order
to deal with different environment contexts or to fulfill changing customer
requirements. This induces an increased complexity during design-time as well
as tedious maintenance efforts. We already proposed a multi-perspective
modeling approach to improve the development of such systems. It operates on
different levels of abstraction by using well-known UML-models with activity,
composite structure and state chart models. Each perspective was enriched with
delta modeling to manage variability and evolution. As an extension, we now
focus on the development of an efficient consistency checking method at several
levels to ensure valid variants of the automation system. Consistency checking
must be provided for each perspective in isolation, in-between the perspectives

Online Tool Condition Monitoring Based on Parsimonious Ensemble+
Accurate diagnosis of tool wear in metal turning process remains an open
challenge for both scientists and industrial practitioners because of
inhomogeneities in workpiece material, nonstationary machining settings to suit
production requirements, and nonlinear relations between measured variables and
tool wear. Common methodologies for tool condition monitoring still rely on
batch approaches which cannot cope with a fast sampling rate of metal cutting
process. Furthermore they require a retraining process to be completed from
scratch when dealing with a new set of machining parameters. This paper
presents an online tool condition monitoring approach based on Parsimonious
Ensemble+, pENsemble+. The unique feature of pENsemble+ lies in its highly
flexible principle where both ensemble structure and base-classifier structure
can automatically grow and shrink on the fly based on the characteristics of
data streams. Moreover, the online feature selection scenario is integrated to
actively sample relevant input attributes. The paper presents advancement of a
newly developed ensemble learning algorithm, pENsemble+, where online active
learning scenario is incorporated to reduce operator labelling effort. The
ensemble merging scenario is proposed which allows reduction of ensemble
complexity while retaining its diversity. Experimental studies utilising
real-world manufacturing data streams and comparisons with well known
algorithms were carried out. Furthermore, the efficacy of pENsemble was
examined using benchmark concept drift data streams. It has been found that
pENsemble+ incurs low structural complexity and results in a significant

An Ontology for Product-Service Systems
Industries are transforming their business strategy from a product-centric to a more service-centric nature by bundling products and services into integrated solutions to enhance the relationship between their customers. Since Product- Service Systems design research is currently at a rudimentary stage, the development of a robust ontology for this area would be helpful. The advantages of a standardized ontology are that it could help researchers and practitioners to communicate their views without ambiguity and thus encourage the conception and implementation of useful methods and tools. Process improvement in BAe Systems and the wider aerospace sector
Purpose: To research the change management processes used to implement ‘world class’ improvements in a major aerospace company, BAE SYSTEMS, and to propose a model for process improvement in the wider aerospace sector. Design/methodology/approach: The research was undertaken as a longitudinal study over a period of five years. A variety of research methodologies were used at various stages of the research including action research and observation. Semi-structured and unstructured interviews were used to gather qualitative data along with documentary evidence of the processes being used. Findings: There are three key findings. Firstly, an understanding of the production stages in the aerospace sector: future project; new product; sustain and return to work. Secondly details of a matrix-based approach and the issues regarding its implementation in a large organisation are discussed. Thirdly, a generic set of principles to aid process improvement in the aerospace sector is proposed. Research limitations/implications: Given that the study is based in one company, there are issues regarding the generalisation of the results. A potential further research project would entail the implementation of the proposed generic principles in another aerospace organisation. Practical implications: For BAE SYSTEMS, this research project aided their understanding of the issues involved in rolling out a process improvement program in a large organisation.Originality/value: Until recently, most of the research into process improvement had either been universalistic or aimed at another type of industry, such as the automotive industry.
