    Adaptive nonlinear control using fuzzy logic and neural networks

    The problem of adaptive nonlinear control, i.e. the control of nonlinear dynamic systems with unknown parameters, is considered. Current techniques usually assume that either the control system is linearizable or the type of nonlinearity is known. This results in poor control quality for many practical problems. Moreover, the control system design becomes too complex for a practicing engineer. The objective of this thesis is to provide a practical, systematic approach for solving the problem of identification and control of nonlinear systems with unknown parameters, when the explicit linear parametrization is either unknown or impossible. Fuzzy logic (FL) and neural networks (NNs) have proven to be the tools for universal approximation, and hence are considered. However, FL requires expert knowledge and there is a lack of systematic procedures to design NNs for control. A hybrid technique, called fuzzy logic adaptive network (FLAN), which combines the structure of an FL controller with the learning aspects of the NNs is developed. FLAN is designed such that it is capable of both structure learning and parameter learning. Gradient descent based technique is utilized for the parameter learning in FLAN, and it is tested through a variety of simulated experiments in identification and control of nonlinear systems. The results indicate the success of FLAN in terms of accuracy of estimation, speed of convergence, insensitivity against a range of initial learning rates, robustness against sudden changes in the input as well as noise in the training data. The performance of FLAN is also compared with the techniques based on FL and NNs, as well as several hybrid techniques

    Holder exponent spectra for human gait

    The stride interval time series in normal human gait is not strictly constant, but fluctuates from step to step in a complex manner. More precisely, it has been shown that the control process for human gait is a fractal random phenomenon, that is, one with a long-term memory. Herein we study the Holder exponent spectra for the slow, normal and fast gaits of 10 young healthy men in both free and metronomically triggered conditions and establish that the stride interval time series is more complex than a monofractal phenomenon. A slightly multifractal and non-stationary time series under the three different gait conditions emerges.Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures, 9 Table

    A fractional order impedance individualised model of nociceptor stimulation

    This paper introduces a mathematical model and methodology for detecting and analysing nociceptor stimulation effects by means of non-invasive evaluation of the skin impedance in the hand palm. The derivation of the model is based on multi-scale physiological stages during perception of pain in awake individuals and contains elements of fractional calculus. The result is a lumped fractional order impedance model, to be used in a personalised way, i.e. per individual and not per population distribution data. A measurement device and a protocol have been determined in collaboration with Ghent University Hospital pain specialists. The experiments support our claim that changes occur in skin impedance during stimulation, i.e. when perceived as pain in one awake healthy volunteer. Following this proof of concept study, the model enables simulation of how nociceptor stimulation enters the systemic process of pain, for further analysis and development within the regulatory loops of pain management practices.     Compact and robust deep learning architecture for fluorescence lifetime imaging and FPGA implementation

    This paper reports a bespoke adder-based deep learning network for time-domain fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM). By leveraging the l1-norm extraction method, we propose a 1-D Fluorescence Lifetime AdderNet (FLAN) without multiplication-based convolutions to reduce the computational complexity. Further, we compressed fluorescence decays in temporal dimension using a log-scale merging technique to discard redundant temporal information derived as log-scaling FLAN (FLAN+LS). FLAN+LS achieves 0.11 and 0.23 compression ratios compared with FLAN and a conventional 1-D convolutional neural network (1-D CNN) while maintaining high accuracy in retrieving lifetimes. We extensively evaluated FLAN and FLAN+LS using synthetic and real data. A traditional fitting method and other non-fitting, high-accuracy algorithms were compared with our networks for synthetic data. Our networks attained a minor reconstruction error in different photon-count scenarios. For real data, we used fluorescent beads' data acquired by a confocal microscope to validate the effectiveness of real fluorophores, and our networks can differentiate beads with different lifetimes. Additionally, we implemented the network architecture on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) with a post-quantization technique to shorten the bit-width, thereby improving computing efficiency. FLAN+LS on hardware achieves the highest computing efficiency compared to 1-D CNN and FLAN.     Adaptive non linear system identification and channel equalization usinf functional link artificial neural network

    In system theory, characterization and identification are fundamental problems. When the plant behavior is completely unknown, it may be characterized using certain model and then, its identification may be carried out with some artificial neural networks(ANN) like multilayer perceptron(MLP) or functional link artificial neural network(FLANN) using some learning rules such as back propagation (BP) algorithm. They offer flexibility, adaptability and versatility, so that a variety of approaches may be used to meet a specific goal, depending upon the circumstances and the requirements of the design specifications. The primary aim of the present thesis is to provide a framework for the systematic design of adaptation laws for nonlinear system identification and channel equalization. While constructing an artificial neural network the designer is often faced with the problem of choosing a network of the right size for the task. The advantages of using a smaller neural network are cheaper cost of computation and better generalization ability. However, a network which is too small may never solve the problem, while a larger network may even have the advantage of a faster learning rate. Thus it makes sense to start with a large network and then reduce its size. For this reason a Genetic Algorithm (GA) based pruning strategy is reported. GA is based upon the process of natural selection and does not require error gradient statistics. As a consequence, a GA is able to find a global error minimum. Transmission bandwidth is one of the most precious resources in digital communication systems. Communication channels are usually modeled as band-limited linear finite impulse response (FIR) filters with low pass frequency response. When the amplitude and the envelope delay response are not constant within the bandwidth of the filter, the channel distorts the transmitted signal causing intersymbol interference (ISI). The addition of noise during propagation also degrades the quality of the received signal. All the signal processing methods used at the receiver's end to compensate the introduced channel distortion and recover the transmitted symbols are referred as channel equalization techniques.When the nonlinearity associated with the system or the channel is more the number of branches in FLANN increases even some cases give poor performance. To decrease the number of branches and increase the performance a two stage FLANN called cascaded FLANN (CFLANN) is proposed.This thesis presents a comprehensive study covering artificial neural network (ANN) implementation for nonlinear system identification and channel equalization. Three ANN structures, MLP, FLANN, CFLANN and their conventional gradient-descent training methods are extensively studied. Simulation results demonstrate that FLANN and CFLANN methods are directly applicable for a large class of nonlinear control systems and communication problems

    Wet and dry internal friction can be measured with the Jarzynski equality

    The existence of two types of internal friction wet and dry is revisited, and a simple protocol is proposed for distinguishing between the two types and extracting the appropriate internal friction coefficient. The scheme requires repeatedly stretching a polymer molecule, and measuring the average work dissipated in the process by applying the Jarzynski equality. The internal friction coefficient is then estimated from the average dissipated work in the extrapolated limit of zero solvent viscosity. The validity of the protocol is established through analytical calculations on a one-dimensional free-draining Hookean spring-dashpot model for a polymer, and Brownian dynamics simulations of: (a) a single-mode nonlinear spring-dashpot model for a polymer, and (b) a finitely extensible bead-spring chain with cohesive intra-chain interactions, both of which incorporate fluctuating hydrodynamic interactions. Well-established single-molecule manipulation techniques, such as optical tweezer-based pulling, can be used to implement the suggested protocol experimentally.Comment: 27 pages, 17 figure

    Real time control of nonlinear dynamic systems using neuro-fuzzy controllers

    The problem of real time control of a nonlinear dynamic system using intelligent control techniques is considered. The current trend is to incorporate neural networks and fuzzy logic into adaptive control strategies. The focus of this work is to investigate the current neuro-fuzzy approaches from literature and adapt them for a specific application. In order to achieve this objective, an experimental nonlinear dynamic system is considered. The motivation for this comes from the desire to solve practical problems and to create a test-bed which can be used to test various control strategies. The nonlinear dynamic system considered here is an unstable balance beam system that contains two fluid tanks, one at each end, and the balance is achieved by pumping the fluid back and forth from the tanks. A popular approach, called ANFIS (Adaptive Networks-based Fuzzy Inference Systems), which combines the structure of fuzzy logic controllers with the learning aspects from neural networks is considered as a basis for developing novel techniques, because it is considered to be one of the most general framework for developing adaptive controllers. However, in the proposed new method, called Generalized Network-based Fuzzy Inferencing Systems (GeNFIS), more conventional fuzzy schemes for the consequent part are used instead of using what is called the Sugeno type rules. Moreover, in contrast to ANFIS which uses a full set of rules, GeNFIS uses only a limited number of rules based on certain expert knowledge. GeNFIS is tested on the balance beam system, both in a real- time actual experiment and the simulation, and is found to perform better than a comparable ANFIS under supervised learning. Based on these results, several modifications of GeNFIS are considered, for example, synchronous defuzzification through triangular as well as bell shaped membership functions. Another modification involves simultaneous use of Sugeno type as well as conventional fuzzy schemes for the consequent part, in an effort to create a more flexible framework.
