A MDL-based Model of Gender Knowledge Acquisition
This paper presents an iterative model of\ud
knowledge acquisition of gender information\ud
associated with word endings in\ud
French. Gender knowledge is represented\ud
as a set of rules containing exceptions.\ud
Our model takes noun-gender pairs as input\ud
and constantly maintains a list of\ud
rules and exceptions which is both coherent\ud
with the input data and minimal with\ud
respect to a minimum description length\ud
criterion. This model was compared to\ud
human data at various ages and showed a\ud
good fit. We also compared the kind of\ud
rules discovered by the model with rules\ud
usually extracted by linguists and found\ud
interesting discrepancies
The Impact of Knowledge Codification, Experience Trajectories and Integration Strategies on the Performance of Corporate Acquisitions
This study addresses the following questions: (1) can organizations learn how to manage infrequent and heterogeneous tasks ? (2) If they can, then what are the mechanisms that might explain learning under these circumstances ?, and (3) what are the limitations under which these mechanisms operate ? A model based on explicit knowledge codification and tacit experience accumulation is submitted and tested using data from a sample of 183 acquisitions in the US banking industry. Measures of post-acquisition integration strategies and of pre-acquisition resource characteristics are included in the model. We find that tacit knowledge accumulation significantly impacts performance when the experiences are highly homogeneous, and that knowledge codification improves acquisition performance in the context of high post-acquisition integration, i.e. when the organizational challenge is particularly complex. Also, the level of integration between the two firms involved in the acquisition positively influences performance, while the replacement of top managers in the acquired firm impacts performance in a negative fashion. Implications are drawn for organizational learning theory and for a knowledge-based view of corporate acquisitions.
Language Acquisition: Seeing through Wittgenstein
This paper aims to exemplify the language acquisition model by tracing back to the Socratic model of language learning procedure that sets down inborn knowledge, a kind of implicit knowledge that becomes explicit in our language. Jotting down the claims in Meno, Plato triggers a representationalist outline basing on the deductive reasoning, where the conclusion follows from the premises (inborn knowledge) rather than experience. This revolution comes from the pen of Noam Chomsky, who amends the empiricist position on the creativity of language by pinning down it with the innateness hypothesis. However, Chomsky never rejects the external world or the linguistic stipulation that relies on the objective reality.
Wittgenstein’s model of language acquisition upholds a liaison centric appeal that stands between experience (use theory of meaning) and mentalism (mind based inner experiences). Wittgenstein’s Tractatus never demarcates the definite mental processes that entangle with the method of understanding and meaning. Linkage between knowledge management practices towards library user’s satisfaction at Malaysian University Libraries
Academic library services have begun to apply various knowledge management (KM)
practices in the provision of library services. KM has been developed to enhance the use
of organizational knowledge through practices and organizational learning. KM
practices include the creation, capture and/or acquisition of knowledge, its retention and
organization, its dissemination and re-use, and general responsiveness to the new
knowledge. The focus of this research is the assessment of KM practices, particularly
creation, acquisition, capture, sharing, recording and preservation, and their effects on
Library User’s Satisfaction (LUS) in Malaysian university libraries. The objective of this
research is the development of a model to enhance KM processes (i.e. Creation,
acquisition, capturing, sharing, recording, and preserving) and to improve library users’
satisfaction. A quantitative approach in research methodology is employed (e.g.
Questionnaire) for the purpose of generating new knowledge and understanding of
library concerns. The findings of this research show that the overall KM practice at six
Malaysian university libraries is at a high level. The findings from the structural model
indicated that two KM processes, namely knowledge creation and acquisition, are not
supported in terms of KM practices at Malaysian university libraries. Other KM
processes, namely capturing, sharing, recording, and preserving are fully supported
towards KM practices in the library. Hence, the major contribution of this research is a
model, namely KM Practice-Library User’s Satisfaction (KMP-LUS) highlighting six
KM processes based on strong Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) fit indices
A knowledge based system for linking information to support decision making in construction
This work describes the development of a project model centred on the information and knowledge generated and used by managers. It describes a knowledge-based system designed for this purpose. A knowledge acquisition exercise was undertaken to determine the tasks of project managers and the information necessary for and used by these tasks. This information was organised into a knowledge base for use by an expert system. The form of the knowledge lent itself to organisation into a link network. The structure of the knowledge-based system, which was developed, is outlined and its use described. Conclusions are drawn as to the applicability of the model and the final system. The work undertaken shows that it is feasible to benefit from the field of artificial intelligence to develop a project manager assistant computer program that utilises the benefit of information and its link
A tool-mediated cognitive apprenticeship approach for a computer engineering course
Teaching database engineers involves a variety of learning activities. A strong focus is on practical problems that go beyond the acquisition of knowledge. Skills and experience are equally important. We propose a virtual apprenticeship model for the knowledge- and skillsoriented Web-based education of database students. We adapt the classical cognitive apprenticeship theory to the Web context utilising scaffolding and activity theory. The choice of educational media and the forms of student interaction with the media are central success criteria
Role of Knowledge Creation and Absorptive Capacity: A Panel Data Study of Innovation
Purpose- Knowledge creation refers to the ability of firms to create new knowledge that starts from individuals to integrating the firms and then the overall economy. This study suggests that knowledge acquisition in a country has a significant relationship with innovative performance.
Design/Methodology- Data from 48 highly HDI countries is taken from World Bank and World Economic Forum. Based on 480 country-year observations in a panel mediator model, it is revealed that the national efforts of boosting knowledge acquisition influence the firms’ innovative performance.
Findings- Further, it is found that absorptive capacity in the employability of knowledgeable workers works as a mediator between knowledge acquisition and innovation. Whereby higher knowledge acquisition leads to higher absorptive capacity and higher innovation.
Practical Implications- This study builds a quantitative model for the macroeconomic context of knowledge-based view
The role of international knowledge acquisition and absorptive capacity as a predictor of international performance
The international business literature recognizes the central role of knowledge
and learning as key determinants of the internationalization of firms. While
the stages model underlined the influence of experiential learning, new
research has shown that there are also other relevant types of knowledge
acquisition, which can be structured following Huber's model (1991) as
congenital, grafted, vicarious, and search knowledge acquisition. However,
knowledge acquisition constitutes only a first step for learning. In this respect,
absorptive capacity appears as a useful construct since it integrates knowledge
acquisition, assimilation, transformation, and exploitation capacity. This paper
analyzes the influence of the types of knowledge acquisition on international
performance and considers absorptive capacity dimensions as moderator
