    Ground-based ISAR imaging of cooperative and non-cooperative sea vessels with 3-D rotational motion

    Includes bibliographical references (leaves 175-188).Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) images of sea vessels are a rich source of information for radar cross section (RCS) measurement and ship classification. However, ISAR imaging of sea vessels is a challenging task because the 3-D rotational motion of such vessels often gives rise to blurring. Blurry ISAR images are not desirable because they lead to inaccurate parameter estimation, which reduces the probability of correct classification. The objective of this thesis is to explain how 3-D rotational motion causes blurring in ISAR imagery and to develop effective techniques for imaging cooperative and non-cooperative sea vessels for RCS measurement and ship-classification purposes respectively. Much research has been done to investigate the effect of 3-D rotational motion on an ISAR image under the assumption that an object's axis of rotation is constant over the coherent processing interval (CPI). In this thesis, a new quaternion-based system model is proposed to characterise the amount of blurring in an ISAR image when a sea vessel possesses 3-D rotational motion over a CPI. Simulations were done to characterise the migration of a scatterer through Doppler cells due to the time-varying nature of the Doppler generating axis of rotation. Simulation results with realistic 3-D rotational motion show substantial blurring in the cross-range dimension of the resulting ISAR image, and this blurring is attributed to the time-varying nature of the angle of the Doppler generating axis of rotation and the object's rotation rate over the CPI

    Moving Target Analysis in ISAR Image Sequences with a Multiframe Marked Point Process Model

    In this paper we propose a Multiframe Marked Point Process model of line segments and point groups for automatic target structure extraction and tracking in Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) image sequences. For the purpose of dealing with scatterer scintillations and high speckle noise in the ISAR frames, we obtain the resulting target sequence by an iterative optimization process, which simultaneously considers the observed image data and various prior geometric interaction constraints between the target appearances in the consecutive frames. A detailed quantitative evaluation is performed on 8 real ISAR image sequences of different carrier ship and airplane targets, using a test database containing 545 manually annotated frames

    ISAR Image Classification with Wavelet and Watershed Transforms

    Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar images are playing a significant role in classification of sea and air targets. First we acquire the ISAR images of targets using a sensor like radar and extract the characteristics of targets from the ISAR images in the form of feature vectors. The computed feature vectors are used for classification of targets. In this work, widely used and efficient segmentation tool Watershed transform and the multi resolution technique wavelet transform are explored to derive the target features. An artificial neural network based classifier is used for classification. The Wavelet analysis divides the information of an image into approximation and detail sub signals. The approximate and three detail sub signal values are taken as feature vectors and given as input to the classifier for ship ISAR image classification. The widely used segmentation technique, Watershed transform is applied to the ISAR images. The wavelet coefficients are computed for the segmented ISAR images and used as feature vectors for classification of the ISAR images. Also, the statistical moments mean and standard deviation are computed for the color ISAR images itself, taken in RGB format. These statistical color moments are used as feature vector.  The classification accuracy is compared for the feature vectors

    Sampling design may obscure species–area relationships in landscape-scale field studies

    We investigated 1) the role of area per se in explaining anuran species richness on reservoir forest islands, after controlling for several confounding factors. We also assessed 2) how sampling design affects the inferential power of island species–area relationships (ISARs) aiming to 3) provide guidelines to yield reliable estimates of area-induced species losses in patchy systems. We surveyed anurans with autonomous recording units at 151 plots located on 74 islands and four continuous forest sites at the Balbina Hydroelectric Reservoir landscape, central Brazilian Amazonia. We applied semi-log ISAR models to assess the effect of sampling design on the fit and slope of species–area curves. To do so, we subsampled our surveyed islands following both a 1) stratified and 2) non-stratified random selection of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 islands covering 1) the full range in island size (0.45–1699 ha) and 2) only islands smaller than 100 ha, respectively. We also compiled 25 datasets from the literature to assess the generality of our findings. Island size explained ca half of the variation in species richness. The fit and slope of species–area curves were affected mainly by the range in island size considered, and to a very small extent by the number of islands surveyed. In our literature review, all datasets covering a range of patch sizes larger than 300 ha yielded a positive ISAR, whereas the number of patches alone did not affect the detection of ISARs. We conclude that 1) area per se plays a major role in explaining anuran species richness on forest islands within an Amazonian anthropogenic archipelago; 2) the inferential power of island species–area relationships is severely degraded by sub-optimal sampling designs; 3) at least 10 habitat patches spanning three orders of magnitude in size should be surveyed to yield reliable species–area estimates in patchy systems

    On the usage of GRECOSAR, an orbital polarimetric SAR simulator of complex targets, to vessel classification studies

    This paper presents a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) simulator that is able to generate polarimetric SAR (POLSAR) and polarimetric inverse SAR data of complex targets. It solves the electromagnetic problem via high-frequency approximations, such as physical optics and the physical theory of diffraction, with notable computational efficiency. In principle, any orbital monostatic sensor working at any band, resolution, and operating mode can be modeled. To make simulations more realistic, the target’s bearing and speed are considered, and for the particular case of vessels, even the translational and rotational movements induced by the sea state. All these capabilities make the simulator a powerful tool for supplying large amounts of data with precise scenario information and for testing future sensor configurations. In this paper, the usefulness of the simulator on vessel classification studies is assessed. Several simulated polarimetric images are presented to analyze the potentialities of coherent target decompositions for classifying complex geometries, thus basing an operational algorithm. The limitations highlighted by the results suggest that other approaches, like POLSAR interferometry, should be explored.Peer Reviewe

    Decentralized approach for translational motion estimation with multistatic inverse synthetic aperture radar systems

    This paper addresses the estimation of the target translational motion by using a multistatic Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) system composed of an active radar sensor and multiple receiving-only devices. Particularly, a two-step decentralized technique is derived: the first step estimates specific signal parameters (i.e., Doppler frequency and Doppler rate) at the single-sensor level, while the second step exploits these estimated parameters to derive the target velocity and acceleration components. Specifically, the second step is organized in two stages: the former is for velocity estimation, while the latter is devoted to velocity estimation refinement if a constant velocity model motion can be regarded as acceptable, or to acceleration estimation if a constant velocity assumption does not apply. A proper decision criterion to select between the two motion models is also provided. A closed-form theoretical performance analysis is provided for the overall technique, which is then used to assess the achievable performance under different distributions of the radar sensors. Additionally, a comparison with a state-of-the-art centralized approach has been carried out considering computational burden and robustness. Finally, results obtained against experimental multisensory data are shown confirming the effectiveness of the proposed technique and supporting its practical application

    DVB-S based passive polarimetric ISAR – methods and experimental validation

    In this work, we focus on passive polarimetric ISAR for ship target imaging using DVB-S signals of opportunity. A first goal of the research is to investigate if, within the challenging passive environment, different scattering mechanisms, belonging to distinct parts of the imaged target, can be separated in the polarimetric domain. Furthermore, a second goal is at verifying if polarimetric diversity could enable the formation of ISAR products with enhanced quality with respect to the single channel case, particularly in terms of better reconstruction of the target shape. To this purpose, a dedicated trial has been conducted along the river Rhine in Germany by means of an experimental DVB-S based system developed at Fraunhofer FHR and considering a ferry as cooperative target. To avoid inaccuracies due to data-driven motion compensation procedures and to fairly interpret the polarimetric results, we processed the data by means of a known-motion back-projection algorithm obtaining ISAR images at each polarimetric channel. Then, different approaches in the polarimetric domain have been introduced. The first one is based on the well-known Pauli Decomposition. The others can be divided in two main groups: (i) techniques aimed at separating the different backscattering mechanisms, and (ii) image domain techniques to fuse the polarimetric information in a single ISAR image with enhanced quality. The different considered techniques have been applied to several data sets with distinct bistatic geometries. The obtained results clearly demonstrate the potentialities of polarimetric diversity that could be fruitfully exploited for classification purposes
