    A tabu search procedure for generating robust project baseline schedules under stochastic resource availabilities.

    The majority of research efforts in project scheduling assume a static and deterministic environment with complete information. In practice, however, these assumptions will hardly, if ever, be satisfied. Proactive scheduling aims at the generation of robust baseline schedules that are as much as possible protected against anticipated disruptions that may occur during project execution. In this paper, we focus on disruptions that may be caused by stochastic resource availabilities and aim at generating stable baseline schedules, where the solution robustness (stability) of the baseline schedule is measured by the weighted deviation between the planned and the actually realized activity starting times during project execution. We present a tabu search procedure that operates on a surrogate free slack based objective function. The effectiveness of the procedure is demonstrated by extensive computational results obtained on a set of randomly generated test instances.

    Project network models with discounted cash flows. A guided tour through recent developments.

    Get PDF
    The vast majority of the project scheduling methodologies presented in the literature have been developed with the objective of minimizing the project duration subject to precedence and other constraints. In doing so, the financial aspects of project management are largely ignored. Recent efforts have taken into account discounted cash flow and have focused on the maximalization of the net present value (npv) of the project as the more appropriate objective. In this paper we offer a guided tour through the important recent developments in the expanding field of research on deterministic and stochastic project network models with discounted cash flows. Subsequent to a close examination of the rationale behind the npv objective, we offer a taxonomy of the problems studied in the literature and critically review the major contributions. Proper attention is given to npv maximization models for the unconstrained scheduling problem with known cash flows, optimal and suboptimal scheduling procedures with various types of resource constraints, and the problem of determining both the timing and amount of payments.Scheduling; Models; Model; Discounted cash flow; Cash flow; Project scheduling; Project management; Management; Net present value; Value; Problems; Maximization; Optimal;

    Resource-constrained project scheduling for timely project completion with stochastic activity durations.

    We investigate resource-constrained project scheduling with stochastic activity durations. Various objective functions related to timely project completion are examined, as well as the correlation between these objectives. We develop a GRASP-heuristic to produce high-quality solutions, using so-called descriptive sampling. The algorithm outperforms other existing algorithms for expected-makespan minimization. The distribution of the possible makespan realizations for a given scheduling policy is studied, and problem difficulty is explored as a function of problem parameters.GRASP; Project scheduling; Uncertainty;

    Project scheduling under uncertainty using fuzzy modelling and solving techniques

    In the real world, projects are subject to numerous uncertainties at different levels of planning. Fuzzy project scheduling is one of the approaches that deal with uncertainties in project scheduling problem. In this paper, we provide a new technique that keeps uncertainty at all steps of the modelling and solving procedure by considering a fuzzy modelling of the workload inspired from the fuzzy/possibilistic approach. Based on this modelling, two project scheduling techniques, Resource Constrained Scheduling and Resource Leveling, are considered and generalized to handle fuzzy parameters. We refer to these problems as the Fuzzy Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (FRCPSP) and the Fuzzy Resource Leveling Problem (FRLP). A Greedy Algorithm and a Genetic Algorithm are provided to solve FRCPSP and FRLP respectively, and are applied to civil helicopter maintenance within the framework of a French industrial project called Helimaintenance

    This paper describes new heuristic reactive project scheduling procedures that may be used to repair resource-constrained roject baseline schedules that suer from multiple activity duration disruptions during project execution.The objective is to minimize the deviations between the baseline schedule and the schedule that is actually realized.We discuss computational results obtained with priority-rule based schedule generation schemes, a sampling approach and a weighted-earliness tardiness heuristic on a set of randomly generated project instances.Project scheduling; Scheduling; Reactive scheduling; Research; Uncertainty; Stability;

    Stability and resource allocation in project planning.

    The majority of resource-constrained project scheduling efforts assumes perfect information about the scheduling problem to be solved and a static deterministic environment within which the pre-computed baseline schedule is executed. In reality, project activities are subject to considerable uncertainty, which generally leads to numerous schedule disruptions. In this paper, we present a resource allocation model that protects a given baseline schedule against activity duration variability. A branch-and-bound algorithm is developed that solves the proposed resource allocation problem. We report on computational results obtained on a set of benchmark problems.Constraint satisfaction; Information; Model; Planning; Problems; Project management; Project planning; Project scheduling; Resource allocati; Scheduling; Stability; Uncertainty; Variability;
