    Land Suitability Evaluation for surface and sprinkler irrigation Using Geographical Information System (GIS) in Guang Watershed, Highlands of Ethiopia

    The main objective of this study was to spatially evaluate land suitability for surface and sprinkler irrigation in the Guang watershed, Ethiopia based on FAO guidelines. Geographical Information System (GIS) techniques were used to develop land suitability map. The 30 m spatial resolution Digital Elevation Model was used to generate slope by using “Spatial Analyst Tool Surface Slope” in ArcGIS environment. Land characteristics (LCs) used as criteria for irrigation requirements were soil depth, soil texture, electric conductivity, pH, drainage and slope factors. The irrigation suitability map was made by matching between reclassified LCs with irrigation land use requirements (LURs) using GIS model builder. Surface soil samples from different soil types were collected and analyzed in the soil laboratory of Amhara Design and Supervision Works Enterprise (ADSWE). The crop suitability evaluation was made by matching between reclassified LCs of the watershed with crop LURs using GIS model builder. The results showed that 990.25 ha (39.61%) of the Guang watershed were highly suitable (S1) for surface irrigation method. However, 2370 ha (94.8%) of the region was unsuitable (N) for sprinkler irrigation method due to soil salinity, drainage and pH. This showed that the surface irrigation method was more efficient than the sprinkler irrigation method to intensively and extensively use the land.     Performance of Build-operate-Transfer Projects: Risks' cost implications from professionals and concessionaires perspective

    Determining cost implication of risk factors on performance of Build Operate Transfer (BOT) projects is a major focus of this study. One-hundred and seventeen structured questionnaires were used to collect information randomly from the respondents which made up of professionals such as Builder, Architect, Quantity surveyor and Civil engineer. Content analysis was carried out on the responses for validation; data were further analyzed with Mean Item Score using Risk Mean Index and validated with regression analysis. Meanwhile, the most common risk to all the projects executed are inflation, variation to works, change in government policy and fluctuating nature of foreign exchange with inflation being the highest on rating scale of 0.1 to 1.0 with corresponding cost implications and years. Against the background of the research outcome therefore, cost and time is used in this context as a model typifying the extent of risk implication experienced on the projects

    Multimedia is being used in almost every field. This study is about the use of multimedia in the area of intelligent tutoring systems. This project studies the advantages and disadvantages of interactive multimedia and intelligent tutoring systems, and analyses the ways of combining these technologies in search of an interesting, learnable, flexible, compelling and technology-enhanced educational tool. Educational packages need to be evaluated for effectiveness. When it comes to computer-based instruction, technical concerns such as multimedia effects are taken seriously and there is not enough emphasis on its educational value. There is not much concern about the appropriateness of the instruction method to the computer medium. This research proposes a framework for evaluating educational packages which include a number of issues. Several pieces of educational software were evaluated using this framework and Diagnosis for crop protection, a multimedia software package that aids in teaching the process of diagnosing crop problems, was selected for modification, as a practical application of the theoretical work. We studied different multimedia system development models and methodologies. We also analysed the cognitive issues and intelligent features that enhance the learnability. Finally, the appropriate intelligent features and other factors that could enhance Diagnosis for crop protection to be a more 'active knowledge constructing' environment have been identified.     A machine learning approach with verification of predictions and assisted supervision for a rule-based network intrusion detection system

    Network security is a branch of network management in which network intrusion detection systems provide attack detection features by monitorization of traffic data. Rule-based misuse detection systems use a set of rules or signatures to detect attacks that exploit a particular vulnerability. These rules have to be handcoded by experts to properly identify vulnerabilities, which results in misuse detection systems having limited extensibility. This paper proposes a machine learning layer on top of a rule-based misuse detection system that provides automatic generation of detection rules, prediction verification and assisted classification of new data. Our system offers an overall good performance, while adding an heuristic and adaptive approach to existing rule-based misuse detection systems

    A Survey on Service Composition Middleware in Pervasive Environments

    The development of pervasive computing has put the light on a challenging problem: how to dynamically compose services in heterogeneous and highly changing environments? We propose a survey that defines the service composition as a sequence of four steps: the translation, the generation, the evaluation, and finally the execution. With this powerful and simple model we describe the major service composition middleware. Then, a classification of these service composition middleware according to pervasive requirements - interoperability, discoverability, adaptability, context awareness, QoS management, security, spontaneous management, and autonomous management - is given. The classification highlights what has been done and what remains to do to develop the service composition in pervasive environments

    RELEASE: A High-level Paradigm for Reliable Large-scale Server Software

    Erlang is a functional language with a much-emulated model for building reliable distributed systems. This paper outlines the RELEASE project, and describes the progress in the first six months. The project aim is to scale the Erlang’s radical concurrency-oriented programming paradigm to build reliable general-purpose software, such as server-based systems, on massively parallel machines. Currently Erlang has inherently scalable computation and reliability models, but in practice scalability is constrained by aspects of the language and virtual machine. We are working at three levels to address these challenges: evolving the Erlang virtual machine so that it can work effectively on large scale multicore systems; evolving the language to Scalable Distributed (SD) Erlang; developing a scalable Erlang infrastructure to integrate multiple, heterogeneous clusters. We are also developing state of the art tools that allow programmers to understand the behaviour of massively parallel SD Erlang programs. We will demonstrate the effectiveness of the RELEASE approach using demonstrators and two large case studies on a Blue Gene
