    Sensor-fault tolerance using robust MPC with set-based state estimation and active fault isolation

    In this paper, a sensor fault-tolerant control (FTC) scheme using robust model predictive control (MPC) and set theoretic fault detection and isolation (FDI) is proposed. The MPC controller is used to both robustly control the plant and actively guarantee fault isolation (FI). In this scheme, fault detection (FD) is passive by interval observers, while fault isolation (FI) is active by MPC. The advantage of the proposed approach consists in using MPC to actively decouple the effect of sensor faults on the outputs such that one output component only corresponds to one sensor fault in terms of FI, which can utilize the feature of sensor faults for FI. A numerical example is used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.Postprint (author’s final draft

    Adaptive Estimation and Detection Techniques with Applications

    Hybrid systems have been identified as one of the main directions in control theory and attracted increasing attention in recent years due to their huge diversity of engineering applications. Multiplemodel (MM) estimation is the state-of-the-art approach to many hybrid estimation problems. Existing MM methods with fixed structure usually perform well for problems that can be handled by a small set of models. However, their performance is limited when the required number of models to achieve a satisfactory accuracy is large due to time evolution of the true mode over a large continuous space. In this research, variable-structure multiple model (VSMM) estimation was investigated, further developed and evaluated. A fundamental solution for on-line adaptation of model sets was developed as well as several VSMM algorithms. These algorithms have been successfully applied to the fields of fault detection and identification as well as target tracking in this thesis. In particular, an integrated framework to detect, identify and estimate failures is developed based on the VSMM. It can handle sequential failures and multiple failures by sensors or actuators. Fault detection and target maneuver detection can be formulated as change-point detection problems in statistics. It is of great importance to have the quickest detection of such mode changes in a hybrid system. Traditional maneuver detectors based on simplistic models are not optimal and are computationally demanding due to the requirement of batch processing. In this presentation, a general sequential testing procedure is proposed for maneuver detection based on advanced sequential tests. It uses a likelihood marginalization technique to cope with the difficulty that the target accelerations are unknown. The approach essentially utilizes a priori information about the accelerations in typical tracking engagements and thus allows improved detection performance. The proposed approach is applicable to change-point detection problems under similar formulation, such as fault detection

    Robust MPC for actuator-fault tolerance using set-based passive fault detection and active fault isolation

    In this paper, an actuator fault-tolerant control (FTC) scheme is proposed, which is based on tube-based model predictive control (MPC) and set-theoretic fault detection and isolation (FDI). As a robust MPC technique, tube-based MPC, can effectively deal with system constraints and uncertainties with relatively low computational complexity. Set-based FDI can robustly detect and isolate actuator faults. Here, fault detection (FD) is passive by invariant sets, while fault isolation (FI) is active by tubes. Using the constraint-handling ability of MPC controllers, an active FI approach is implemented.     Prognostic Reasoner based adaptive power management system for a more electric aircraft

    This research work presents a novel approach that addresses the concept of an adaptive power management system design and development framed in the Prognostics and Health Monitoring(PHM) perspective of an Electrical power Generation and distribution system(EPGS).PHM algorithms were developed to detect the health status of EPGS components which can accurately predict the failures and also able to calculate the Remaining Useful Life(RUL), and in many cases reconfigure for the identified system and subsystem faults. By introducing these approach on Electrical power Management system controller, we are gaining a few minutes lead time to failures with an accurate prediction horizon on critical systems and subsystems components that may introduce catastrophic secondary damages including loss of aircraft. The warning time on critical components and related system reconfiguration must permits safe return to landing as the minimum criteria and would enhance safety. A distributed architecture has been developed for the dynamic power management for electrical distribution system by which all the electrically supplied loads can be effectively controlled.A hybrid mathematical model based on the Direct-Quadrature (d-q) axis transformation of the generator have been formulated for studying various structural and parametric faults. The different failure modes were generated by injecting faults into the electrical power system using a fault injection mechanism. The data captured during these studies have been recorded to form a “Failure Database” for electrical system. A hardware in loop experimental study were carried out to validate the power management algorithm with FPGA-DSP controller.     Fault Diagnosis of Hybrid Systems with Dynamic Bayesian Networks and Hybrid Possible Conficts

    Hybrid systems are very important in our society, we can find them in many engineering fields. They can develop a task by themselves or they can interact with people so they have to work in a nominal and safe state. Model-based Diagnosis (MBD) is a diagnosis branch that bases its decisions in models. This dissertation is placed in the MBD framework with Artificial Intelligence techniques, which is known as DX community. The kind of hybrid systems we focus on have a continuous behaviour commanded by discrete events. There are several works already done in the diagnosis of hybrid systems field. Most of them need to pre-enumerate all the possible modes in the system even if they are never visited during the process. To solve that problem, some authors have presented the Hybrid Bond Graph (HBG) modeling technique, that is an extension of Bond Graphs. HBGs do not need to enumerate all the system modes, they are built as the system visits them at run time. Regarding the faults that can appear in a hybrid system, they can be divided in two main groups: (1) Discrete faults, and (2) parametric or continuous faults. The discrete faults are related to the hybrid nature of the systems while the parametric or continuous faults appear as faults in the system parameters or in the sensors. Both types af faults have not been considered in a unified diagnosis architecture for hybrid systems. The diagnosis process can be divided in three main stages: Fault Detection, Fault Isolation and Fault Identification. Computing the set of Possible Conflicts (PCs) is a compilation technique used in MBD of continuous systems. They provide a decomposition of a system in subsystems with minimal analytical redundancy that makes the isolation process more efficient. They can be used for fault detection and isolation tasks by means of the Fault Signature Matrix (FSM). The FSM is a matrix that relates the different parameters (fault candidates) in a system and the PCs where they are used

    SPSA-Based Tracking Method for Single-Channel-Receiver Array

    A novel tracking method in the phased antenna array with a single-channel receiver for the moving signal source is presented in this paper. And the problems of the direction-of-arrival track and beamforming in the array system are converted to the power maximization of received signal in the free-interference conditions, which is different from the existing algorithms that maximize the signal to interference and noise ratio. The proposed tracking method reaches the global optimum rather than local by injecting the extra noise terms into the gradient estimation. The antenna beam can be steered to coincide with the direction of the moving source fast and accurately by perturbing the output of the phase shifters during motion, due to the high efficiency and easy implementation of the proposed beamforming algorithm based on the simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA). Computer simulations verify that the proposed tracking scheme is robust and effective

    Fault Diagnosis Techniques for Linear Sampled Data Systems and a Class of Nonlinear Systems

    This thesis deals with the fault diagnosis design problem both for dynamical continuous time systems whose output signal are affected by fixed point quantization,\ud referred as sampled-data systems, and for two different applications whose dynamics are inherent high nonlinear: a remotely operated underwater vehicle and a scramjet-powered hypersonic vehicle.\ud Robustness is a crucial issue. In sampled-data systems, full decoupling of disturbance terms from faulty signals becomes more difficult after discretization.\ud In nonlinear processes, due to hard nonlinearity or the inefficiency of linearization, the “classical” linear fault detection and isolation and fault tolerant control methods may not be applied.\ud Some observer-based fault detection and fault tolerant control techniques are studied throughout the thesis, and the effectiveness of such methods are validated with simulations. The most challenging trade-off is to increase sensitivity to faults and robustness to other unknown inputs, like disturbances. Broadly speaking, fault detection filters are designed in order to generate analytical diagnosis functions, called residuals, which should be independent with respect to the system operating state and should be decoupled from disturbances. Decisions on the occurrence of a possible fault are therefore taken on the basis such residual signals
