    SCALABLE AND EFFICIENT VERTICAL HANDOVER DECISION ALGORITHMS IN VEHICULAR NETWORK CONTEXTS

    A finales de los años noventa, y al comienzo del nuevo milenio, las redes inalámbricas han evolucionado bastante, pasando de ser sólo una tecnología prometedora para convertirse en un requisito para las actividades cotidianas en las sociedades desarrolladas. La infraestructura de transporte también ha evolucionado, ofreciendo comunicación a bordo para mejorar la seguridad vial y el acceso a contenidos de información y entretenimiento. Los requisitos de los usuarios finales se han hecho dependientes de la tecnología, lo que significa que sus necesidades de conectividad han aumentado debido a los diversos requisitos de las aplicaciones que se ejecutan en sus dispositivos móviles, tales como tabletas, teléfonos inteligentes, ordenadores portátiles o incluso ordenadores de abordo (On-Board Units (OBUs)) dentro de los vehículos. Para cumplir con dichos requisitos de conectividad, y teniendo en cuenta las diferentes redes inalámbricas disponibles, es necesario adoptar técnicas de Vertical Handover (VHO) para cambiar de red de forma transparente y sin necesidad de intervención del usuario. El objetivo de esta tesis es desarrollar algoritmos de decisión (Vertical Handover Decision Algorithms (VHDAs)) eficientes y escalables, optimizados para el contexto de las redes vehiculares. En ese sentido se ha propuesto, desarrollado y probado diferentes algoritmos de decisión basados en la infraestructura disponible en las actuales, y probablemente en las futuras, redes inalámbricas y redes vehiculares. Para ello se han combinado diferentes técnicas, métodos computacionales y modelos matemáticos, con el fin de garantizar una conectividad apropiada, y realizando el handover hacia las redes más adecuadas de manera a cumplir tanto con los requisitos de los usuarios como los requisitos de las aplicaciones.     Performance of information discovery and message relaying in mobile ad hoc networks

    This paper presents 7DS, a novel peer-to-peer resource sharing system. 7DS is an architecture, a set of protocols and an implementation enabling the exchange of data among peers that are not necessarily connected to the Internet. Peers can be either mobile or stationary. We focus on three different facets of cooperation, namely, data sharing, message relaying and network connection sharing. 7DS enables wireless devices to discover, disseminate, relay information among each other to increase the data access. We evaluate via extensive simulations the effectiveness of our system for data dissemination and message relaying among mobile devices with a large number of user mobility scenarios. We model several general data dissemination approaches and investigate the effect of the wireless coverage range, 7DS host density, and cooperation strategy among the mobile hosts as a function of time. We also present a power conservation mechanism that is beneficial, since it increases the power savings, without degrading the data dissemination. Using theory from random walks, random environments and diffusion of controlled processes, we model one of these data dissemination schemes and show that the analysis confirms the simulation results for this scheme

    An Analytical Model for Information Centric Internet of Things Networks in Opportunistic Scenarios

    The availability of environmental monitoring data collected by Internet of Things networks can be essential for many critical processes, such as relief operations in disaster areas. The underlying communications infrastructure can be however severely compromised in these scenarios and therefore opportunistic approaches might be needed. Approaches based on information centric networks (ICN), where moving devices forward collected data, have been proposed for opportunistic scenarios but to date, the dynamics of the delivery process in ICNs remain poorly understood. In this paper, we build a family of Markovian models for the delivery process of ICNs in opportunistic scenarios, that allow us to derive the end-to-end delay distribution and the storage ratio in terms of the encounter rate of the moving devices. Furthermore, we investigate how prefetching mechanisms affect the delivery process compared to conventional ICNs. The proposed models are fully validated in a computer simulation environment and demonstrate that the utility of delivery with prefetching reaches its peak in a short time and then decreases at a high rate. Our Markovian models can provide both the insight and quantitative estimations that are needed to design practical ICNs in opportunistic scenarios
