The tremendous demand is pushing the development of wireless mobile communications faster than ever before. Handoff management has widely been recognized as one of the most important and challenging problems for a seamless access to wireless network and mobile services. Mobility Models plays an important role in handoff management. In this paper, the effect of handoff procedure on the performance of random mobile nodes in wireless networks was investigated. Mobility of node is defined by various mobility models. Evaluating mobility models within an infrastructured network gives solution to performance measures like blocking probability, dropping probability to evaluate the performance of handoff algorithm. Handoff algorithm based on Absolute and Relative Measurement was used to examine the effect of Random Walk and Gauss Markov mobility models on performance of Infrastructure based Wireless Network. Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) have recently emerged to be a cost-effective solution to support large-scale wireless Internet access. They have numerous ap- plications, such as broadband Internet access, building automation, and intelligent transportation systems. One research challenge for Internet-based WMNs is to design efficient mobility management techniques for mobile users to achieve seamless roam- ing. Mobility management includes handoff management and location management. The objective of this research is to design new handoff and location management techniques for Internet-based infrastructure WMNs. Handoff management enables a wireless network to maintain active connections as mobile users move into new service areas. Previous solutions on handoff manage- ment in infrastructure WMNs mainly focus on intra-gateway mobility. New handoff issues involved in inter-gateway mobility in WMNs have not been properly addressed. Hence, a new architectural design is proposed to facilitate inter-gateway handoff man- agement in infrastructure WMNs. The proposed architecture is designed to specifi- cally address the special handoff design challenges in Internet-based WMNs. It can facilitate parallel executions of handoffs from multiple layers, in conjunction with a data caching mechanism which guarantees minimum packet loss during handoffs. Based on the proposed architecture, a Quality of Service (QoS) handoff mechanism is also proposed to achieve QoS requirements for both handoff and existing traffic before and after handoffs in the inter-gateway WMN environment. Location management in wireless networks serves the purpose of tracking mobile users and locating them prior to establishing new communications. Existing location management solutions proposed for single-hop wireless networks cannot be directly applied to Internet-based WMNs. Hence, a dynamic location management framework in Internet-based WMNs is proposed that can guarantee the location management performance and also minimize the protocol overhead. In addition, a novel resilient location area design in Internet-based WMNs is also proposed. The formation of the location areas can adapt to the changes of both paging load and service load so that the tradeoff between paging overhead and mobile device power consumption can be balanced, and at the same time, the required QoS performance of existing traffic is maintained. Therefore, together with the proposed handoff management design, efficient mobility management can be realized in Internet-based infrastructure WMNs

Safetynet version 2, a packet error recovery architecture for vertical handoffs

Mobile devices are connecting to the Internet through an increasingly heterogeneous network environment. This connectivity via multiple types of wireless networks allows the mobile devices to take advantage of the high speed and the low cost of wireless local area networks and the large coverage of wireless wide area networks. To maximize the benefits from these complementing characteristics, the mobile devices need to be able to switch seamlessly between the different network types. However, the switch between the technologies, also known as a vertical handoff, often results in significant packet loss and degradation of connectivity due to handoff delay and also increased packet loss rate on the border of the coverage area of the networks. In our previous work, we have proposed an inter technology mobility management architecture which addresses the packet losses using selective resending of packets lost during the handoff period. In this paper, we extend the architecture to address packet losses due to wireless errors more efficiently by taking advantage of erasure codes to form redundancy packets. We propose to send these redundancy packets over both links. We show that this proposal reduces both the chances of packet loss and the buffering requirements of the original Safetynet scheme

Mobility and Handoff Management in Wireless Networks

With the increasing demands for new data and real-time services, wireless networks should support calls with different traffic characteristics and different Quality of Service (QoS)guarantees. In addition, various wireless technologies and networks exist currently that can satisfy different needs and requirements of mobile users. Since these different wireless networks act as complementary to each other in terms of their capabilities and suitability for different applications, integration of these networks will enable the mobile users to be always connected to the best available access network depending on their requirements. This integration of heterogeneous networks will, however, lead to heterogeneities in access technologies and network protocols. To meet the requirements of mobile users under this heterogeneous environment, a common infrastructure to interconnect multiple access networks will be needed. In this chapter, the design issues of a number of mobility management schemes have been presented. Each of these schemes utilizes IP-based technologies to enable efficient roaming in heterogeneous network. Efficient handoff mechanisms are essential for ensuring seamless connectivity and uninterrupted service delivery. A number of handoff schemes in a heterogeneous networking environment are also presented in this chapter.Comment: 28 pages, 11 figure

The association of different wireless communication technologies on the way to advanced wireless networks had better face with the developing systems resource utilization and user authentication. Mobility management is vital to omnipresent computing which can be established by location management and distinctive of the mobility management modules. In this work the new protocol is proposed which includes the integration of FHMIPv6 and MIH. The proposed protocol performance is analysed using NS2 simulation. It shows the reduction of handoff latency for video streaming. The cost is also being reduced by the handoff latency while transmitting the signal from one mobile user to another. Further the proposed protocol is compared with the previous protocols

Management of mobility especially balancing the load of handoff for wireless networks is an essential parameter for wireless network design and traffic study. In this paper, we present analytical mobility management in high speed wireless mobile networks focusing on factors such as the number of channel slots and offered load. We demonstrate the performance of handoffs with mobility consideration using several metrics including the alteration of states prior to reaching a cell boundary, the speed of mobile terminal, and the distance between a mobile terminal and a cell boundary. We mainly focus on the performance evaluation for the factor of mobility with taking into account the high speed status of a user
