    Get PDF
It is always challenging to teach children foreign languages, due to the difficulty of learning and their short attention span. To address the challenge and take advantage of the popularity of touchable tablets and smartphones, we propose an educational folktale e-book (EFE-Book) application with an interactive illustratable tool. EFE-Book is developed to teach preschool children to learn foreign languages by telling folktales with illustrations. To encourage effective learning, EFE-Book provides an interactive collage tool that enables users to create collage-based illustrations by hand. We propose a Voronoi diagram based approach to model paper tiles for the development of EFE-Book. With EFE-Book, the user can create colored paper tiles and attach them to the predesigned sketch through touch interface, such as Apple iPad

Introduction to the project in the context of the operation “Academy of Plato – Development of knowledge and innovative ideas”, in the Operational Program “Education and Lifelong Learning 2007-2013”’. The underlying purpose of this project is to create links between the present day and the spirit and significance of the Academy of Plato as a place of research and learning, a place where not only philosophers, orators and politicians, but also ordinary members of the public, came together to learn, to debate, to reason and to explore new ideas. The intention is to make this a place for discussion of the problems of our own age, a place dedicated not only to knowledge and political thought, but also to the development of the personality and the encouragement of active citizenship. At the same time the project also seeks to highlight local history and its importance to the present day, while showcasing the archaeological site and laying out specially planned itineraries or ‘trails’ dedicated to the approach to knowledge and the cultivation of contemporary citizenship

This research addresses the change in how the Spanish University Entrance Examination can be delivered in the future. There is a wide acknowledgement that computer tests are very demanding for the delivering institutions which makes computer language testing difficult to implement. However, the use of tablet PCs can facilitate the delivery at even lower cost than the regular computer based language testing. 183 students in their last year of high school took a computer based language test which included reading, writing, listening and speaking. The research aspects were 1) whether they feel at ease with the tablet PC exam; 2) if they felt that visual aspects were accessible and 3) whether the interface organization was clear. The paper first has a brief description of the OPENPAU® platform, after it addresses the field study based on questionnaires and observations with students during the test delivery, finally the results indicate that this means of language test delivery could be adequate not only for the Spanish University Entrance Examination but for most standardized tests

ZAENAL MUTTAQIEN : “LEARNING ENGLISH WRITING THROUGH BBC ONLINE LEARNING” Based on the real experiences of the writer also as we know that learning writing is a basic language skill, as important as speaking, listening and reading. But the writer has found the problem that the learners still difficult to learn it in the school because it’s limited by time. Then, the writer look for some methods of learning that can facilitate the students tried to dig up their motivation and their passion in English by using internet as medium for learning exactly using online learning such as BBC online learning. Less or more it can help their understanding and improving in English writing well. According to Rusman (2010: 335), Web-based learning is popularly known as the web-based education (WBE) or sometimes called e-learning (electronic learning) or online learning also can defined as the application of web technology in the world of learning for an educational process. Also According to Combine (1997: 89), Use of the Internet as a learning medium to condition students to learn independently. "Through independent study, students Become doers, as well as thinkers". One site that provides online access to learning of English especially on learning English writing is BBC online learning. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative, because the writer wants to explain about learning Engish writing through BBC online learning as the objective of the research. The techniques of collecting data is observation and document, so the sources of data in this thesis is taken from internet such as BBC’s website, wikipedia, goole, etc. Also frrom library such as Syekh Nurjati State Institute for islamic Studies’ library. After the data have gotten, the writer analyze it becomes research object and transferred it to be documents of this thesis. After the writer finished his research and analyzed the data, the researcher found that BBC Online is the brand name and home for the BBC's UK online service. Background: Effective communication between the patients and radiographers can be a daunting task in a multicultural, multilingual environment. With 11 official languages, South Africans experience language barriers amongst themselves, which pose unique communication challenges on a daily basis. It is thus important to explore how radiographers overcome such challenges to provide an effective service to their patients. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore and describe the experiences of radiographers in Gauteng province in communicating with patients in a multilingual, multicultural healthcare setting and make recommendations towards overcoming such barriers. Setting: The focus group discussions were conducted in English and at a private location that was convenient for the participants in Gauteng. Method: The study employed a qualitative phenomenological approach using focus group interviews (FGIs) to solicit the experiences of participants and gain an in-depth understanding of the phenomenon. Results: The findings showed that patient–radiographer cross-cultural communication is ineffective whilst language barriers are encountered daily. Participants subsequently offered a number of recommendations to enhance communication with patients from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. These included workshops or short courses to improve language skills, posters to allow for non-verbal communication, the use of professional interpreters or mobile translation technology, employment of a diverse workforce and a focus on cultural sensitivity and learning an additional language at tertiary level. Conclusion: Although a variety of communication strategies are available, the most appropriate combination should be explored for individual radiology practices in order to serve their respective diverse patient base. Recommendations that emanated from this study can, therefore, be used as a guide to radiology practices to facilitate effective patient–radiographer communication

A Program Optimization Method for Embedded Software Developed Using Open Sources

    Get PDF
Program optimization or software optimization is the process of modifying a software system to make some aspect of it work more efficiently or use fewer resources. When developing software for embedded systems, open source libraries are usually used. An Embedded software built using a variety of open software and libraries is apt to have too many unused codes because open source libraries contain many functions and features to be used in various applications. In this paper, we describe the process of a library optimization method to reduce memory consumption for the user interface software of a set-top box product. The overall optimization process uses freeware tools developed for the Linux operating system. We devised an optimization technique to compensate for operation imperfections in the target system. The original Qt library of 19.57 MB was optimized to be 7.26 MB in program image size. In the case of the DirectFB library, 3.2 MB was reduced to 2.4 MB. The optimization process can be applied to any embedded software that are developed with open source libraries or sources

In this project, we design and develop a mobile app that adapts the desktop software Fertilicalc. This app, which we call Fertilicalc Mobile, allows farmers and agriculture professionals and students to calculate the nutrient and fertilizer requirements for a chosen selection of crops. The app is built on Flutter, a multiplatform framework that allows us to produce Android and iOS versions of the app, with native performance. We propose a ‘Model – View – Commands + Services’ architecture, based on state management tool Provider, around which our app is built. To implement the functionality of Fertilicalc, we set up a REST API, which executes a Python script that performs the necessary calculations for our app. The result of the project is a functional and extensible fertilizer management app, which also has an educational component.
