    An indoor variance-based localization technique utilizing the UWB estimation of geometrical propagation parameters

    A novel localization framework is presented based on ultra-wideband (UWB) channel sounding, employing a triangulation method using the geometrical properties of propagation paths, such as time delay of arrival, angle of departure, angle of arrival, and their estimated variances. In order to extract these parameters from the UWB sounding data, an extension to the high-resolution RiMAX algorithm was developed, facilitating the analysis of these frequency-dependent multipath parameters. This framework was then tested by performing indoor measurements with a vector network analyzer and virtual antenna arrays. The estimated means and variances of these geometrical parameters were utilized to generate multiple sample sets of input values for our localization framework. Next to that, we consider the existence of multiple possible target locations, which were subsequently clustered using a Kim-Parks algorithm, resulting in a more robust estimation of each target node. Measurements reveal that our newly proposed technique achieves an average accuracy of 0.26, 0.28, and 0.90 m in line-of-sight (LoS), obstructed-LoS, and non-LoS scenarios, respectively, and this with only one single beacon node. Moreover, utilizing the estimated variances of the multipath parameters proved to enhance the location estimation significantly compared to only utilizing their estimated mean values

    Statistical analysis of multipath clustering in an indoor office environment

    A parametric directional-based MIMO channel model is presented which takes multipath clustering into account. The directional propagation path parameters include azimuth of arrival (AoA), azimuth of departure (AoD), delay, and power. MIMO measurements are carried out in an indoor office environment using the virtual antenna array method with a vector network analyzer. Propagation paths are extracted using a joint 5D ESPRIT algorithm and are automatically clustered with the K-power-means algorithm. This work focuses on the statistical treatment of the propagation parameters within individual clusters (intracluster statistics) and the change in these parameters from one cluster to another (intercluster statistics). Motivated choices for the statistical distributions of the intracluster and intercluster parameters are made. To validate these choices, the parameters' goodness of fit to the proposed distributions is verified using a number of powerful statistical hypothesis tests. Additionally, parameter correlations are calculated and tested for their significance. Building on the concept of multipath clusters, this paper also provides a new notation of the MIMO channel matrix (named FActorization into a BLock-diagonal Expression or FABLE) which more visibly shows the clustered nature of propagation paths

    A Review of Radio Frequency Based Localization for Aerial and Ground Robots with 5G Future Perspectives

    Efficient localization plays a vital role in many modern applications of Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV) and Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which would contribute to improved control, safety, power economy, etc. The ubiquitous 5G NR (New Radio) cellular network will provide new opportunities for enhancing localization of UAVs and UGVs. In this paper, we review the radio frequency (RF) based approaches for localization. We review the RF features that can be utilized for localization and investigate the current methods suitable for Unmanned vehicles under two general categories: range-based and fingerprinting. The existing state-of-the-art literature on RF-based localization for both UAVs and UGVs is examined, and the envisioned 5G NR for localization enhancement, and the future research direction are explored

    A Review of Indoor Millimeter Wave Device-based Localization and Device-free Sensing Technologies and Applications

    The commercial availability of low-cost millimeter wave (mmWave) communication and radar devices is starting to improve the penetration of such technologies in consumer markets, paving the way for large-scale and dense deployments in fifth-generation (5G)-and-beyond as well as 6G networks. At the same time, pervasive mmWave access will enable device localization and device-free sensing with unprecedented accuracy, especially with respect to sub-6 GHz commercial-grade devices. This paper surveys the state of the art in device-based localization and device-free sensing using mmWave communication and radar devices, with a focus on indoor deployments. We first overview key concepts about mmWave signal propagation and system design. Then, we provide a detailed account of approaches and algorithms for localization and sensing enabled by mmWaves. We consider several dimensions in our analysis, including the main objectives, techniques, and performance of each work, whether each research reached some degree of implementation, and which hardware platforms were used for this purpose. We conclude by discussing that better algorithms for consumer-grade devices, data fusion methods for dense deployments, as well as an educated application of machine learning methods are promising, relevant and timely research directions.Comment: 43 pages, 13 figures.     Cramer-Rao bounds in the estimation of time of arrival in fading channels

    This paper computes the Cramer-Rao bounds for the time of arrival estimation in a multipath Rice and Rayleigh fading scenario, conditioned to the previous estimation of a set of propagation channels, since these channel estimates (correlation between received signal and the pilot sequence) are sufficient statistics in the estimation of delays. Furthermore, channel estimation is a constitutive block in receivers, so we can take advantage of this information to improve timing estimation by using time and space diversity. The received signal is modeled as coming from a scattering environment that disperses the signal both in space and time. Spatial scattering is modeled with a Gaussian distribution and temporal dispersion as an exponential random variable. The impact of the sampling rate, the roll-off factor, the spatial and temporal correlation among channel estimates, the number of channel estimates, and the use of multiple sensors in the antenna at the receiver is studied and related to the mobile subscriber positioning issue. To our knowledge, this model is the only one of its kind as a result of the relationship between the space-time diversity and the accuracy of the timing estimation.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    CIR Parametric Rules Precocity For Ranging Error Mitigation In IR-UWB

    The cutting-edge technology to support high ranging accuracy within the indoor environment is Impulse Radio Ultra Wide Band (IR-UWB) standard. Besides accuracy, IR-UWB’s low-complex architecture and low power consumption align well with mobile devices. A prime challenge in indoor IR-UWB based localization is to achieve a position accuracy under non-line-of-sight (NLOS) and multipath propagation (MPP) conditions. Another challenge is to achieve acceptable accuracy in the conditions mentioned above without any significant increase in latency and computational burden. This dissertation proposes a solution for addressing the accuracy and reliability problem of indoor localization system satisfying acceptable delay or computational complexity overhead. The proposed methodology is based on rules for identification of line-of-sight (LOS) and NLOS and the range error bias estimation and correction due to NLOS and MPP conditions. The proposed methodology provides accuracy for two major application domains, namely, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and indoor tracking and navigation (ITN). This dissertation offers two different solutions for the localization problem. The first solution is a rules-based classification of LOS / NLOS and geometric-based range correction for WSN. In the first solution, the Boolean logic based classification is designed for identification of LOS/NLOS. The logic is based on channel impulse response (CIR) parameters. The second solution is based on fuzzy logic. The fuzzy based solution is appealing well for the stringent precision requirements in ITN. In this solution, the parametric Boolean logic from the first solution is converted and expanded into rules. These rules are implemented into a fuzzy logic based mechanism for designing a fuzzy inference system. The system estimates the ranging errors and correcting unmitigated ranges. The expanded rules and designed methodology are based on theoretical analysis and empirical observations of the parameters. The rules accommodate the parameters uncertainties for estimating the ranging error through the relationship between the input parameters uncertainties and ranging error using fuzzy inference mechanism. The proposed solutions are evaluated using real-world measurements in different indoor environments. The performance of the proposed solutions is also evaluated in terms of true classification rate, residual ranging errors’ cumulative distributions and probability density distributions, as well as outage probabilities. Evaluation results show that the true classification rate is more than 95%. Moreover, using the proposed fuzzy logic based solution, the residual errors convergence of 90% is attained for error threshold of 10 cm, and the reliability of the localization system is also more than 90% for error threshold of 15 cm

    On geometry-base statistical channel models for MIMO wireles communications

    El uso de sistemas de comunicación de banda ancha de múltiple entradamúltiple salida (Multiple Input Multiple Output MIMO) es actualmente objeto de un interés considerable. Una razón para esto es el reciente desarrollo de sistemas de comunicación móvil de tercera generación (3G) y superiores, tales como la tecnología de banda ancha Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA, por sus siglas en inglés), la cual proporciona canales de radio de 5 MHz de ancho de banda. Para el diseño y la simulación de estos sistemas de radio móviles que usan propagación inalámbrica MIMO (como Wideband-CDMA por ejemplo), necesitamos modelos de canal que provean la requerida información espacial y temporal necesaria para el estudio de tales sistemas, esto es, los parámetros básicos de modelado en los dominios del espacio y el tiempo. Como ejemplo podemos mencionar, el valor cuadrático medio de la dispersión del retardo (Delay spread DS) el cual está directamente relacionado a la capacidad de un sistema de comunicación específico y nos da una idea aproximada de la complejidad del receptor. En esta tesis, se propone un modelo basado en geometría con enfoque en grupos (clusters) y es utilizado para el análisis en los dominios del espacio y el tiempo para condiciones estacionarias, y para representar los perfiles de potencia-angulo-retardo (Power Delay Angle Profiles PDAPs) de los componentes multi-trayectoria en ambientes urbanos. Además, se han derivado soluciones en formas cerradas para las expresiones en el dominio del ángulo (espacial) y del tiempo. La investigación previa sobre el modelado de canales cubre una amplia variedad de aspectos en varios niveles de detalle, incluyendo análisis para condiciones no estacionarias. Sin embargo el trabajo presentado en la literatura no incluye las relaciones entre los grupos (cluster) físicos y los PDAPs. El modelo propuesto basado en grupos (clusters) puede ser usado para mejorar aún más el desempeño en condiciones estacionarias de los sistemas de comunicaciones móviles actuales y futuros tales como los sistemas de comunicación MIMO de banda ancha. En la tesis también se presenta un análisis en el dominio del ángulo (espacial) y del tiempo respectivamente, a través de las funciones densidad de probabilidad (PDF) de la dirección de llegada (Direction of Arrival DOA) y el tiempo de llegada (Time of Arrival TOA) para el modelo basado en grupos. A fin de evaluar las funciones de probabilidad teóricas derivadas, éstas han sido comparadas con resultados experimentales publicados en la literatura. La comparación con estos resultados experimentales muestran una buena concordancia, no obstante la técnica de modelado presentada en esta tesis se encuentra limitada a condiciones estacionarias del canal. La condición de no estacionariedad se ubica más allá del alcance de esta tesis, es decir, el modelo propuesto no incorpora el efecto Doppler en los análisis
