Delay Tolerant Networks for Efficient Information Harvesting and Distribution in Intelligent Transportation Systems
[EN] Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) can make transportation safer, more efficient, and more sustainable
by applying various information and communication technologies. One of these technologies are \acfp{VN}.
\acp{VN} combine different communication solutions such as cellular networks,
\acfp{VANET}, or IEEE 802.11 technologies to provide connectivity among
vehicles, and between vehicles and road infrastructure.
This thesis focuses on VNs, and considers that the high speed of the nodes
and the presence of obstacles like buildings, produces a highly variable network
topology, as well as more frequent partitions in the network. Therefore,
classical \ac{MANET} protocols do not adapt well to VANETs. Under these
conditions, \ac{DTN}
have been proposed as an alternative able to cope with these adverse
characteristics. In DTN, when a message cannot be routed
to its destination, it is not immediately dropped but it is instead stored and
carried until a new route becomes available. The combination of VN and
DTN is called \acp{VDTN}.
In this thesis, we propose a new VDTN protocol designed to collect
information from vehicular sensors. Our proposal, called \ac{MSDP}, combines
information about the localization obtained from a GNSS system with the actual
street/road layout obtained from a Navigation System (NS) to define a new
routing metric. Both analytical and simulation results prove that MSDP outperforms
previous proposals.
Concerning the deployment of VNs and VANET technologies, technology
already left behind the innovation and the standardization phases, and it is
about time it reach the first early adopters in the market. However, most car
manufacturers have decided to implement VN devices in the form of On Board
Units (OBUs), which are expensive, heavily manufacturer dependent, and
difficult to upgrade. These facts are delaying the deployment of VN. To boost
this process, we have developed the GRCBox architecture. This architecture is
based on low-cost devices and enables the establishment of V2X, \emph{i.e.} V2I and V2V, communications
while integrating users by easing the use of general purpose devices like
smartphones, tablets or laptops. To demonstrate the viability of the GRCBox
architecture, we combined it with a DTN platform called Scampi to obtain
actual results over a real VDTN scenario. We also
present several GRCBox-aware applications that illustrate how developers can
create applications that bring the potential of VN to user devices.[ES] Los sistemas de transporte inteligente (ITS) son el soporte para el establecimiento de un
transporte más seguro, más eficiente y más sostenible mediante el uso de
tecnologías de la información y las comunicaciones.
Una de estas tecnologías son las redes vehiculares
(VNs). Las VNs combinan diferentes tecnologías de comunicación como las redes
celulares, las redes ad-hoc vehiculares (VANETs) o las redes 802.11p para
proporcionar conectividad entre vehículos, y entre vehículos y la
infraestructura de carreteras.
Esta tesis se centra en las VNs, en las cuales la alta velocidad de los
nodos
y la presencia de obstáculos como edificios producen una topología de red
altamente variable, así como frecuentes particiones en la red. Debido a estas características,
los protocolos para redes móviles ad-hoc (MANETs) no se adaptan bien a las
VANETs. En estas condiciones, las redes tolerantes a retardos (DTNs) se han
propuesto como una alternativa capaz de hacer frente a estos problemas. En DTN,
cuando un mensaje no puede ser encaminado hacia su destino, no es
inmediatamente descartado sino es almacenado hasta que una nueva ruta esta disponible.
Cuando las VNs y las DTNs se combinan surgen las redes vehiculares tolerantes
a retardos (VDTN).
En esta tesis proponemos un nuevo protocolo para VDTNs diseñado para recolectar
la información generada por sensores vehiculares. Nuestra propuesta, llamada
MSDP, combina la información obtenida del servicio de información geográfica
(GIS) con el mapa real de las calles obtenido del sistema de navegación (NS)
para definir una nueva métrica de encaminamiento. Resultados analíticos y
mediante simulaciones prueban que MSDP mejora el rendimiento de propuestas
anteriores.
En relación con el despliegue de las VNs y las tecnologías VANET, la
tecnología ha dejado atrás las fases de innovación y estandarización,
ahora es el momento de alcanzar a los primeros usuarios del mercado. Sin embargo,
la mayoría de fabricantes han decidido implementar los dispositivos para VN
como unidades de a bordo (OBU), las cuales son caras y difíciles de
actualizar. Además, las OBUs son muy dependientes del fabricante original.
Todo esto esta retrasando el despliegue de las VNs. Para acelerar la adopción
de las VNs, hemos desarrollado la arquitectura GRCBox. La arquitectura GRCBox
esta basada en un dispositivo de bajo coste que permite a los usuarios usar
comunicaciones V2X (V2V y V2I) mientras utilizan dispositivos de propósito general como
teléfonos inteligentes, tabletas o portátiles. Las pruebas incluidas en esta
tesis demuestran la viabilidad de la arquitectura GRCBox. Mediante la
combinación de nuestra GRCBox y una plataforma de DTN llamada Scampi hemos
diseñado y probado un escenario VDTN real. También presentamos como los
desarrolladores pueden crear nuevas aplicaciones GRCBox para llevar el

Una d'aquestes tecnologies són les xarxes vehiculars (VN). Les VN combinen
diferents tecnologies de comunicació, com ara les xarxes cel·lulars, les
xarxes ad-hoc vehiculars (VANET) o les xarxes 802.11p, per a proporcionar
comunicació entre vehicles, i entre vehicles i la infraestructura de
carreteres.
Aquesta tesi se centra en les VANET, en les quals l'alta velocitat dels nodes
i la presència d'obstacles, com els edificis, produeixen una topologia de
xarxa altament variable, i també freqüents particions en la xarxa. Per aquest
motiu, els protocols per a xarxes mòbils ad-hoc (MANET) no s'adapten bé. En
aquestes condicions, les xarxes tolerants a retards (DTN) s'han proposat com
una alternativa capaç de fer front a aquests problemes. En DTN, quan un
missatge no pot ser encaminat cap a la seua destinació, no és immediatament
descartat sinó que és emmagatzemat fins que apareix una ruta nova.
Quan les VN i les DTN es combinen sorgeixen les xarxes vehicular tolerants a
retards (VDTN).
En aquesta tesi proposem un nou protocol per a VDTN dissenyat per a
recol·lectar la informació generada per sensors vehiculars. La nostra
proposta, anomenada MSDP, combina la informació obtinguda del servei
d'informació geogràfica (GIS) amb el mapa real dels carrers obtingut del
sistema de navegació (NS) per a definir una nova mètrica d'encaminament.
Resultats analítics i mitjançant simulacions proven que MSDP millora el
rendiment de propostes prèvies.
En relació amb el desplegament de les VN i les tecnologies VANET, la
tecnologia ha deixat arrere les fases d'innovació i estandardització, ara és
temps d'aconseguir als primers usuaris del mercat. No obstant això, la majoria
de fabricants han decidit implementar els dispositius per a VN com a unitats
de bord (OBU), les quals són cares i difícils d'actualitzar. A més, les OBU
són molt dependents del fabricant original. Tot això està retardant el
desplegament de les VN.
Per a accelerar l'adopció de les VN, hem desenvolupat l'arquitectura GRCBox.
L'arquitectura GRCBox està basada en un dispositiu de baix cost que permet als
usuaris usar comunicacions V2V mentre usen dispositius de propòsit general,
com ara telèfons intel·ligents, tauletes o portàtils. Les proves incloses en
aquesta tesi demostren la viabilitat de l'arquitectura GRCBox. Mitjançant la
combinació de la nostra GRCBox i la plataforma de DTN Scampi, hem dissenyat i
provat un escenari VDTN pràctic. També presentem com els desenvolupadors poden
crear noves aplicacions GRCBox per a portar el potencial de les VN als

Comprehensive vehicular networking platform for V2I and V2V communications within the Walkie-Talkie Project
[EN] Communication architectures integrating vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications will be the key of success for the next generation of cars. Nevertheless, the integration of these communication partners in the same platform is a challenging issue because most of the literature is focused on individual parts, such as V2V routing protocols or specific safety services. The Walkie-Talkie project was proposed to fill this gap, focusing on the integration of V2V and V2I systems to equip vehicles with a set of intelligent services addressing safer, smarter, and sustainable driving. This paper describes the developed communications platform. The network design is based on IPv6 to support middleware and applications executed on both the vehicle and infrastructure sides. Whereas V2I is focused on the usage of IPv6 network mobility, V2V is provided by means of a hybrid solution based on intelligent delivery and delay tolerant networks. On top of the networking protocols, a service access middleware exploiting concepts from next generation networks is proposed, together with a proper on-board application management based on the open service gateway initiative. Routing in Large Scale tactical mobile ad hoc Networks
The current Transformation of the military networks adopts the MANET as a main component of the tactical domain. Indeed, a MANET is the right solution to enable highly mobile, highly reactive and quickly deployable tactical networks. Many applications such as the Situational Awareness rely on group communications, underlying the need for a multicast service within the tactical environment where the MANET is employed as a transit network. The purpose of this thesis is to study the setting up of an optimal multicast service within this tactical environment. We firstly focus on defining the protocol architecture to carry out within the tactical network paying particular attention to the MANET. This network is interconnected with different types of networks based on IP technologies and implementing potentially heterogeneous multicast protocols. The tactical MANET is supposed to be made of several hundred of mobile nodes, which implies that the scalability is crucial in the multicast protocol architecture choice. Since the concept of clustering proposes interesting scalability features, we consider that the MANET is a clustered network. Thereby, we define two multicast routing protocols adapted to the MANET: firstly STAMP that is in charge of the multicast communications within each cluster and secondly SAFIR that handles multicast flows between the clusters. These two protocols that can be implemented independently, act in concert to provide an efficient and scalable multicast service for the tactical MANET. Then, we study the interoperability of these multicast protocols employed within the MANET with those employed in the heterogeneous networks that it is interconnected with in order to guarantee end-to-end seamless multicast services to users. Finally, since the multicast protocols proposed in this thesis rely on underlying unicast routing protocols, we propose, in the last chapter, a scalable unicast routing protocol based on OLS
Design and implementation of simulation tools, protocols and architectures to support service platforms on vehicular networks
Tesis por compendioProducts related with Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are becoming
a reality on our roads.
All car manufacturers are starting to include Internet
access in their vehicles and to integrate smartphones directly from the
dashboard, but more and more services will be introduced in the near future.
Connectivity through "vehicular networks" will become a cornerstone of every
new proposal, and offering an adequate quality of service is obviously desirable.
However, a lot of work is needed for vehicular networks to offer performances
similar to those of the wired networks.
Vehicular networks can be characterized by two main features: high variability
due to mobility levels that can reach up to 250 kilometers per hour,
and heterogeneity, being that various competing versions from different vendors
have and will be released. Therefore, to make the deployment of efficient
services possible, an extensive study must be carried out and adequate tools
must be proposed and developed. This PhD thesis addresses the service deployment
problem in these networks at three different levels: (i) the physical
and link layer, showing an exhaustive analysis of the physical channel and
models; (ii) the network layer, proposing a forwarding protocol for IP packets;
and (iii) the transport layer, where protocols are proposed to improve data
delivery.
First of all, the two main wireless technologies used in vehicular networks
where studied and modeled, namely the 802.11 family of standards, particularly
802.11p, and the cellular networks focusing on LTE. Since 802.11p is a
quite mature standard, we defined (i) a propagation and attenuation model
capable of replicating the transmission range and the fading behavior of real
802.11p devices, both in line-of-sight conditions and when obstructed by small
obstacles, and (ii) a visibility model able to deal with large obstacles, such
as buildings and houses, in a realistic manner.
Additionally, we proposed a
model based on high-level performance indicators (bandwidth and delay) for
LTE, which makes application validation and evaluation easier.
At the network layer, a hybrid protocol called AVE is proposed for packet
forwarding by switching among a set of standard routing strategies. Depending
on the specific scenario, AVE selects one out of four different routing solutions:
a) two-hop direct delivery, b) Dynamic MANET On-demand (DYMO), c)
greedy georouting, and d) store-carry-and-forward technique, to dynamically
adapt its behavior to the specific situation.
At the transport layer, we proposed a content delivery protocol for reliable
and bidirectional unicast communication in lossy links that improves content
delivery in situations where the wireless network is the bottleneck.
It has
been designed, validated, optimized, and its performance has been analyzed
in terms of throughput and resource efficiency.
Finally, at system level, we propose an edge-assisted computing model that
allows reducing the response latency of several queries by placing a computing
unit at the network edge. This way, traffic traversal through the Internet is
avoided when not needed.
This scheme could be used in both 802.11p and
cellular networks, and in this thesis we decided to focus on its evaluation using
LTE networks.
The platform presented in this thesis combines all the individual efforts to
create a single efficient platform. This new environment could be used by any
provider to improve the quality of the user experience obtainable through the
proposed vehicular network-based services.Los productos relacionados con los Sistemas Inteligentes de Transporte (ITS)
se están transformando en una realidad en nuestras carreteras. Todos los
fabricantes de coches comienzan a incluir acceso a internet en sus vehículos y a
facilitar su integración con los teléfonos móviles, pero más y más servicios se
introducirán en el futuro.
La conectividad usando las "redes vehiculares" se
convertirá en la piedra angular de cada nueva propuesta, y ofrecer una calidad
de servicio adecuada será, obviamente, deseable. Sin embargo, se necesita
una gran cantidad de trabajo para que las redes vehiculares ofrezcan un
rendimiento similar al de las redes cableadas.
Las redes vehiculares quedan definidas por sus dos características básicas:
alto dinamismo, pues los nodos pueden alcanzar una velocidad relativa de más
de 250 km/h; y heterogeneidad, por la gran cantidad de propuestas diferentes
que los fabricantes están lanzando al mercado. Por ello, para hacer posible el
despliegue de servicios sobre ellas, se impone la necesidad de hacer un estudio
en profundidad de este entorno, y deben de proponerse y desarrollarse las
herramientas adecuadas.
Esta tesis ataca la problemática del despliegue de servicios en estas redes
a tres niveles diferentes: (i) el nivel físico y de enlace, mostrando varios análisis
en profundidad del medio físico y modelos derivados para su simulación;
(ii) el nivel de red, proponiendo un protocolo de difusión de la información
para los paquetes IP; y (iii) el nivel de transporte, donde otros protocolos son
propuestos para mejorar el rendimiento del transporte de datos.
En primer lugar, se han estudiado y modelado las dos principales tecnologías
inalámbricas que se utilizan para la comunicación en redes vehiculares,
la rama de estándares 802.11, en concreto 802.11p; y la comunicación celular,
en particular LTE. Dado que el estándar 802.11p es un estándar bastante
maduro, nos centramos en crear (i) un modelo de propagación y atenuación
capaz de replicar el rango de transmisión de dispositivos 802.11p reales, en
condiciones de visión directa y obstrucción por pequeños obstáculos, y (ii) un
modelo de visibilidad capaz de simular el efecto de grandes obstáculos, como
son los edifcios, de una manera realista.
Además, proponemos un modelo
basado en indicadores de rendimiento de alto nivel (ancho de banda y retardo)
para LTE, que facilita la validación y evaluación de aplicaciones.
En el plano de red, se propone un protocolo híbrido, llamado AVE, para
el encaminamiento y reenvío de paquetes usando un conjunto de estrategias
estándar de enrutamiento. Dependiendo del escenario, AVE elige entre cuatro
estrategias diferentes: a) entrega directa a dos saltos, b) Dynamic MANET
On-demand (DYMO) c) georouting voraz, y d) una técnica store-carry-and-
forward, para adaptar su comportamiento dinámicamente a cada situación.
En el plano de transporte, se propone un protocolo bidireccional de distribución
de contenidos en canales con pérdidas que mejora la entrega de contenidos
en situaciones en las que la red es un cuello de botella, como las redes
inalámbricas.
Ha sido diseñado, validado, optimizado, y su rendimiento ha
sido analizado en términos de productividad y eficiencia en la utilización de
recursos.
Finalmente, a nivel de sistema, proponemos un modelo de computación
asistida que permite reducir la latencia en la respuesta a muchas consultas
colocando una unidad de computación en el borde de la red, i.e., la red de
acceso. Este esquema podría ser usado en redes basadas en 802.11p y en redes
celulares, si bien en esta tesis decidimos centrarnos en su evaluación usando
redes LTE.
La plataforma presentada en esta tesis combina todos los esfuerzos individuales
para crear una plataforma única y eficiente. Este nuevo entorno puede
ser usado por cualquier proveedor para mejorar la calidad de la experiencia de

s'estan transformant en una realitat en les nostres carreteres. Tots els fabri-
cants de cotxes comencen a incloure accés a internet en els vehicles i a facilitar-
ne la integració amb els telèfons mòbils, però en el futur més i més serveis s'hi
introduiran. La connectivitat usant les xarxes vehicular esdevindrà la pedra
angular de cada nova proposta, i oferir una qualitat de servei adequada serà,
òbviament, desitjable.
No obstant això, es necessita una gran quantitat de
treball perquè les xarxes vehiculars oferisquen un rendiment similar al de les
xarxes cablejades.
Les xarxes vehiculars queden definides per dues característiques bàsiques:
alt dinamisme, ja que els nodes poden arribar a una velocitat relativa de més
de 250 km/h; i heterogeneïtat, per la gran quantitat de propostes diferents
que els fabricants estan llançant al mercat.
Per això, per a fer possible el
desplegament de serveis sobre aquestes xarxes, s'imposa la necessitat de fer un
estudi en profunditat d'aquest entorn, i cal proposar i desenvolupar les eines
adequades.
Aquesta tesi ataca la problemàtica del desplegament de serveis en aquestes
xarxes a tres nivells diferents: (i) el nivell físic i d'enllaç , mostrant diverses
anàlisis en profunditat del medi físic i models derivats per simular-lo; (ii) el
nivell de xarxa, proposant un protocol de difusió de la informació per als
paquets IP; i (iii) el nivell de transport, on es proposen altres protocols per a
millorar el rendiment del transport de dades.
En primer lloc, s'han estudiat i modelat les dues principals tecnologies
sense fils que s'utilitzen per a la comunicació en xarxes vehiculars, la branca
d'estàndards 802.11, en concret 802.11p; i la comunicació cel · lular, en partic-
ular LTE. Atès que l'estàndard 802.11p és un estàndard bastant madur, ens
centrem a crear (i) un model de propagació i atenuació capaç de replicar el
rang de transmissió de dispositius 802.11p reals, en condicions de visió directa
i obstrucció per petits obstacles, i (ii) un model de visibilitat capaç de simular
l'efecte de grans obstacles, com són els edificis, d'una manera realista. A més,
proposem un model basat en indicadors de rendiment d'alt nivell (ample de
banda i retard) per a LTE, que facilita la validació i l'avaluació d'aplicacions.
En el pla de xarxa, es proposa un protocol híbrid, anomenat AVE, per
a l'encaminament i el reenviament de paquets usant un conjunt d'estratègies
estàndard d'encaminament.
Depenent de l'escenari , AVE tria entre quatre
estratègies diferents: a) lliurament directe a dos salts, b) Dynamic MANET
On-demand (DYMO) c) georouting voraç, i d) una tècnica store-carry-and-
forward, per a adaptar-ne el comportament dinàmicament a cada situació.
En el pla de transport, es proposa un protocol bidireccional de distribució
de continguts en canals amb pèrdues que millora el lliurament de continguts
en situacions en què la xarxa és un coll de botella, com les xarxes sense fils.
Ha sigut dissenyat, validat, optimitzat, i el seu rendiment ha sigut analitzat
en termes de productivitat i eficiència en la utilització de recursos.
Finalment, a nivell de sistema, proposem un model de computació assistida
que permet reduir la latència en la resposta a moltes consultes col · locant una
unitat de computació a la vora de la xarxa, és a dir, la xarxa d'accés. Aquest
esquema podria ser usat en xarxes basades en 802.11p i en xarxes cel · lulars, si
bé en aquesta tesi decidim centrar-nos en la seua avaluació usant xarxes LTE.
La plataforma presentada en aquesta tesi combina tots els esforços indi-
viduals per a crear una plataforma única i eficient. Aquest nou entorn pot ser
usat per qualsevol proveïdor per a millorar la qualitat de l'experiència d'usuari

Multicast for ubiquitos streaming of multimedia content to mobile terminals : Network architecture and protocols
The Universal Mobile Telecommunication Services (UMTS) network was envisioned to carry a wide range of new services; however, the first UMTS release was not designed to efficiently support multimedia content. In this thesis we analyse several mechanisms, and suggest architectural changes to improve UMTS’s capacity for a subset of the multimedia services; high-bandwidth group services. In our initial work we have suggested how IP multicast protocols can be used in the UMTS network to reduce the required network capacity for group services. This proposal was one of many suggestions for the evolving Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) architecture for UMTS. The next technique we have suggested and analysed is a new wireless channel type named the "sticky-channel"; this channel is intended for sparsely populated multicast groups. The sticky-channel is able to stick to mobile multicast members in the boarder area of neighbouring radio cells, thus some base stations does not need to broadcast the multicast data. Consequently, the total number of broadcast channels needed to cover a given area is reduced. There is a marginal reduction of required resources with this technique. In the main part of our work we have studied heterogeneous multihop wireless access for multicast traffic in the UMTS network. In a heterogeneous wireless access network, the wireless resources needed to distribute high-bandwidth group services, can be shared among cooperating network technologies. Mobile terminals with a UMTS interface and an IEEE 802.11 interface are readily available, consequently a heterogeneous network with UMTS and 802.11 links will be easy to deploy. We have described a heterogeneous architecture based on those wireless technologies. In this architecture, the range of a UMTS radio channel is reduced, and local IEEE 802.11-based Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) forward the data to users located outside the coverage of the reduced UMTS channel. The wireless resources required to transmit a data packet are proportional to (at least) the square of the distance the packet must travel, thus a reduction in the channel range releases a significant amount of UMTS radio resources. Detailed simulation results showed acceptable service quality when the UMTS broadcast channel range is more than halved. Finally we have studied whether Forward Error Correction (FEC) at the packet-level on multicast flows could improve the performance of the heterogeneous wireless access network. There is a marginal improvement. Most of the protection brought by the FEC code has been used to repair the increased packet-loss introduced by the FEC overhead
A data-oriented network architecture
In the 25 years since becoming commercially available, the Internet has grown into a global communication infrastructure connecting a significant part of mankind and has become an important part of modern society. Its impressive growth has been fostered by innovative applications, many of which were completely unforeseen by the Internet's inventors. While fully acknowledging ingenuity and creativity of application designers, it is equally impressive how little the core architecture of the Internet has evolved during this time. However, the ever evolving applications and growing importance of the Internet have resulted in increasing discordance between the Internet's current use and its original design. In this thesis, we focus on four sources of discomfort caused by this divergence.
First, the Internet was developed around host-to-host applications, such as telnet and ftp, but the vast majority of its current usage is service access and data retrieval. Second, while the freedom to connect from any host to any other host was a major factor behind the success of the Internet, it provides little protection for connected hosts today. As a result, distributed denial of service attacks against Internet services have become a common nuisance, and are difficult to resolve within the current architecture. Third, Internet connectivity is becoming nearly ubiquitous and reaches increasingly often mobile devices. Moreover, connectivity is expected to extend its reach to even most extreme places. Hence, applications' view to network has changed radically; it's commonplace that they are offered intermittent connectivity at best and required to be smart enough to use heterogeneous network technologies. Finally, modern networks deploy so-called middleboxes both to improve performance and provide protection. However, when doing so, the middleboxes have to impose themselves between the communication end-points, which is against the design principles of the original Internet and a source of complications both for the management of networks and design of application protocols.
In this thesis, we design a clean-slate network architecture that is a better fit with the current use of the Internet. We present a name resolution system based on name-based routing. It matches with the service access and data retrieval oriented usage of the Internet, and takes the network imposed middleboxes properly into account. We then propose modest addressing-related changes to the network layer as a remedy for the denial of service attacks. Finally, we take steps towards a data-oriented communications API that provides better decoupling for applications from the network stack than the original Sockets API does. The improved decoupling both simplifies applications and allows them to be unaffected by evolving network technologies: in this architecture, coping with intermittent connectivity and heterogenous network technologies is a burden of the network stack
Session Management in Multicast
As a new network technique to efficiently distribute information from a small number of senders to large numbers of receivers, multicast encounters many problems in scalability, membership management, security, etc. These problems hinder the deployment of multicast technology in commercial applications. To overcome these problems, a more general solution for multicast technology is needed. In this paper, after studying current multicast technologies, we summarized the technical requirements for multicast, including data delivery, scalability, security, group management, reliability, and deployment. In order to understand and meet the requirements, we define a life cycle model that most multicast sessions should follow. According to the requirements and the life cycle model, we propose and design a general solution that can control each phase of a session and satisfy most requirements for multicast technology. This general solution has three parts: hierarchical topology auto-configuration algorithm, Session Management Mechanism, and techniques supporting different multicast protocols. To verify the feasibility of our solution and compare its performance with other multicast techniques, we simulate our solution and compare it with PIM-SM and ESM
