A Comparison of Mobile Scanning to a Total Station Survey at the I-35 and IA 92 Interchange in Warren County, Iowa, August 15, 2012
The purpose of this project was to investigate the potential for collecting and using data from mobile terrestrial laser scanning (MTLS) technology that would reduce the need for traditional survey methods for the development of highway improvement projects at the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT). The primary interest in investigating mobile scanning technology is to minimize the exposure of field surveyors to dangerous high volume traffic situations. Issues investigated were cost, timeframe, accuracy, contracting specifications, data capture extents, data extraction capabilities and data storage issues associated with mobile scanning. The project area selected for evaluation was the I-35/IA 92 interchange in Warren County, Iowa. This project covers approximately one mile of I-35, one mile of IA 92, 4 interchange ramps, and bridges within these limits. Delivered LAS and image files for this project totaled almost 31GB. There is nearly a 6-fold increase in the size of the scan data after post-processing. Camera data, when enabled, produced approximately 900MB of imagery data per mile using a 2- camera, 5 megapixel system. A comparison was done between 1823 points on the pavement that were surveyed by Iowa DOT staff using a total station and the same points generated through the MTLS process. The data acquired through the MTLS and data processing met the Iowa DOT specifications for engineering survey. A list of benefits and challenges is included in the detailed report. With the success of this project, it is anticipate[d] that additional projects will be scanned for the Iowa DOT for use in the development of highway improvement projects
Weighted simplicial complex reconstruction from mobile laser scanning using sensor topology
We propose a new method for the reconstruction of simplicial complexes
(combining points, edges and triangles) from 3D point clouds from Mobile Laser
Scanning (MLS). Our method uses the inherent topology of the MLS sensor to
define a spatial adjacency relationship between points. We then investigate
each possible connexion between adjacent points, weighted according to its
distance to the sensor, and filter them by searching collinear structures in
the scene, or structures perpendicular to the laser beams. Next, we create and
filter triangles for each triplet of self-connected edges and according to
their local planarity. We compare our results to an unweighted simplicial

Comparative Analysis of Mobile 3D Scanning Technologies for Design, Manufacture of Interior and Exterior Tensile Material Structures and Canvasman Ltd. Case Study
This report aimed to investigate mobile 3D Scanning technologies to improve the 3D data capture and efficiency into Canvasman’s CAD design and manufacturing processes with focus on accurate resolution. The Santander funded Collaborative Venture Fund (CVF) project has provided research, survey data, evaluation and analysis for Canvasman Ltd. on 3D portable scanning hardware and software. The project solutions recommended in this report offers impartial product information on the current appropriate 3D scanning technology that potentially could improve efficiency of data capturing, design and manufacture of interior and exterior spaces, boats, vehicles and other similar constructions for creating and installing flexible coverings and indoor and outdoor structures
Extrinsic Parameter Calibration for Line Scanning Cameras on Ground Vehicles with Navigation Systems Using a Calibration Pattern
Line scanning cameras, which capture only a single line of pixels, have been
increasingly used in ground based mobile or robotic platforms. In applications
where it is advantageous to directly georeference the camera data to world
coordinates, an accurate estimate of the camera's 6D pose is required. This
paper focuses on the common case where a mobile platform is equipped with a
rigidly mounted line scanning camera, whose pose is unknown, and a navigation
system providing vehicle body pose estimates. We propose a novel method that
estimates the camera's pose relative to the navigation system. The approach
involves imaging and manually labelling a calibration pattern with distinctly
identifiable points, triangulating these points from camera and navigation
system data and reprojecting them in order to compute a likelihood, which is
maximised to estimate the 6D camera pose. Additionally, a Markov Chain Monte
Carlo (MCMC) algorithm is used to estimate the uncertainty of the offset.
Tested on two different platforms, the method was able to estimate the pose to
within 0.06 m / 1.05 and 0.18 m / 2.39. We also propose
several approaches to displaying and interpreting the 6D results in a human

Mobile station movement direction prediction (MMDP) based handover scanning for mobile WiMAX system
Mobile WiMAX is a broadband technology that is capable of delivering triple play services (voice, data, and video). However, mobility in mobile WiMAX system is still an issue when the mobile station (MS) moves and its connection is handed over between base stations (BSs). In the handover process, scanning is one of the required phases to find the target BS. During the handover scanning process, the MS must synchronize with all the advertised neighbour BSs (nBSs) to select the best BS candidate for the incoming handover action. Without terminating the connection between the SBS and MS, the SBS will schedule the scanning intervals and sleep-intervals (also called interleaving interval) to MS for the handover scanning. However, during the scanning interval period, all the coming transmissions will be paused. Therefore, the redundant or unnecessary scanning of neighbouring BS cause delay and MAC overhead which may affect real-time applications. In this paper, the MS movement direction prediction (MMDP) based handover scanning scheme is introduced to overcome the mobile WiMAX handover scanning issue. It based on dividing the BS coverage area is into zones and sectors. According to the signal quality; there are three zones, no handover (No-HO), low handover (Low-HO) and high handover (High-HO) zones respectively and six sectors. In this scheme, only two BSs can become candidates; the two that the MS moves toward them will be chosen as the candidate for the handover scanning purpose. Hence, the handover scanning process repetition will be reduced with these two shortlisted BS candidates instead of scanning all nBSs. Thus, MMDP will reduce scanning delay and the number of exchange messages during the handover scanning comparing to the conventional scanning scheme. Although, the MMDP may need an extra computational time, the prediction and scanning process will be finished before the MS reach the High-HO zone, which mean the end-user’s running application will be affected. Simulation results show that the proposed MMDP scheme reduces the total handover scanning delay and scanning interval duration by 25 and 50 % respectively. Also, the size of scanning message is reduced, which leads to reduced signalling overhead
Innovative strategies for 3D visualisation using photogrammetry and 3D scanning for mobile phones
3D model generation through Photogrammetry is a modern overlay of digital information representing real world objects in a virtual world. The immediate scope of this study aims at generating 3D models using imagery and overcoming the challenge of acquiring accurate 3D meshes. This research aims to achieve optimised ways to document raw 3D representations of real life objects and then converting them into retopologised, textured usable data through mobile phones. Augmented Reality (AR) is a projected combination of real and virtual objects. A lot of work is done to create market dependant AR applications so customers can view products before purchasing them. The need is to develop a product independent photogrammetry to AR pipeline which is freely available to create independent 3D Augmented models. Although for the particulars of this research paper, the aim would be to compare and analyse different open source SDK’s and libraries for developing optimised 3D Mesh using Photogrammetry/3D Scanning which will contribute as a main skeleton to the 3D-AR pipeline. Natural disasters, global political crisis, terrorist attacks and other catastrophes have led researchers worldwide to capture monuments using photogrammetry and laser scans. Some of these objects of “global importance” are processed by companies including CyArk (Cyber Archives) and UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre, who work against time to preserve these historical monuments, before they are damaged or in some cases completely destroyed. The need is to question the significance of preserving objects and monuments which might be of value locally to a city or town. What is done to preserve those objects? This research would develop pipelines for collecting and processing 3D data so the local communities could contribute towards restoring endangered sites and objects using their smartphones and making these objects available to be viewed in location based AR. There exist some companies which charge relatively large amounts of money for local scanning projects. This research would contribute as a non-profitable project which could be later used in school curriculums, visitor attractions and historical preservation organisations all over the globe at no cost. The scope isn’t limited to furniture, museums or marketing, but could be used for personal digital archiving as well. This research will capture and process virtual objects using Mobile Phones comparing methodologies used in Computer Vision design from data conversion on Mobile phones to 3D generation, texturing and retopologising. The outcomes of this research will be used as input for generating AR which is application independent of any industry or product
Exploiting Big Data for Customer and Retailer Benefits: A Study of Emerging Mobile Checkout Scenarios.
Purpose – Mobile checkout in the retail store has the promise to be a rich source of big data. It is also a
means to increase the rate at which big data flows into an organization as well as the potential to
integrate product recommendations and promotions in real time. However, despite efforts by retailers
to implement this retail innovation, adoption by customers has been slow. The paper aims to discuss
these issues.
Design/methodology/approach – Based on interviews and focus groups with leading retailers,
technology providers, and service providers, the authors identified several emerging in-store mobile
scenarios; and based on customer focus groups, the authors identified potential drivers and inhibitors
of use.
Findings – A first departure from the traditional customer checkout process flow is that a mobile
checkout involves two processes: scanning and payment, and that checkout scenarios with respect to
each of these processes varied across two dimensions: first, location – whether they were fixed by
location ormobile; and second, autonomy – whether they were assisted by store employees or unassisted.
The authors found no evidence that individuals found mobile scanning to be either enjoyable or to have
utilitarian benefit. The authors also did not find greater privacy concerns with mobile payments
scenarios. The authors did, however, in the post hoc analysis find that mobile unassisted scanning was
preferred tomobile assisted scanning. The authors also found thatmobile unassisted scanning with fixed
unassisted checkout was a preferred service mode, while there was evidence that mobile assisted
scanning with mobile assisted payment was the least preferred checkout mode. Finally, the authors
found that individual differences including computer self-efficacy, personal innovativeness, and
technology anxiety were strong predictors of adoption of mobile scanning and payment scenarios.
Originality/value – The work helps the authors understand the emerging mobile checkout scenarios
in the retail environment and customer reactions to these scenarios
