CHORUS Deliverable 2.1: State of the Art on Multimedia Search Engines

Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective. The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines. From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research

Innovative Evaluation System – IESM: An Architecture for the Database Management System for Mobile Application

As the mobile applications are constantly facing a rapid development in the recent years especially in the academic environment such as student response system [1-8] used in universities and other educational institutions; there has not been reported an effective and scalable Database Management System to support fast and reliable data storage and retrieval. This paper presents Database Management Architecture for an Innovative Evaluation System based on Mobile Learning Applications. The need for a relatively stable, independent and extensible data model for faster data storage and retrieval is analyzed and investigated. It concludes by emphasizing further investigation for high throughput so as to support multimedia data such as video clips, images and documents

Towards a Scalable Dynamic Spatial Database System

With the rise of GPS-enabled smartphones and other similar mobile devices, massive amounts of location data are available. However, no scalable solutions for soft real-time spatial queries on large sets of moving objects have yet emerged. In this paper we explore and measure the limits of actual algorithms and implementations regarding different application scenarios. Location-based indexing for mobile context-aware access to a digital library

Mobile information systems need to collaborate with each other to provide seamless information access to the user. Information about the user and their context provides the points of contact between the systems. Location is the most basic user context. TIP is a mobile tourist information system that provides location-based access to documents in the digital library Greenstone. This paper identifies the challenges for providing effcient access to location-based information using the various access modes a tourist requires on their travels.
