Guest Editorial: Ethics and Privacy in Learning Analytics
The European Learning Analytics Community Exchange (LACE) project is responsible for an ongoing series of workshops on ethics and privacy in learning analytics (EP4LA), which have been responsible for driving and transforming activity in these areas. Some of this activity has been brought together with other work in the papers that make up this special issue. These papers cover the creation and development of ethical frameworks, as well as tools and approaches that can be used to address issues of ethics and privacy. This editorial suggests that it is worth taking time to consider the often intertangled issues of ethics, data protection and privacy separately. The challenges mentioned within the special issue are summarised in a table of 22 challenges that are used to identify the values that underpin work in this area. Nine ethical goals are suggested as the editors’ interpretation of the unstated values that lie behind the challenges raised in this paper
An Opportunistic Error Correction Layer for OFDM Systems
In this paper, we propose a novel cross layer scheme to lower power\ud
consumption of ADCs in OFDM systems, which is based on resolution\ud
adaptive ADCs and Fountain codes. The key part in the new proposed\ud
system is that the dynamic range of ADCs can be reduced by\ud
discarding the packets which are transmitted over 'bad' sub\ud
carriers. Correspondingly, the power consumption in ADCs can be\ud
reduced. Also, the new system does not process all the packets but\ud
only processes surviving packets. This new error correction layer\ud
does not require perfect channel knowledge, so it can be used in a\ud
realistic system where the channel is estimated. With this new\ud
approach, more than 70% of the energy consumption in the ADC can be\ud
saved compared with the conventional IEEE 802.11a WLAN system under\ud
the same channel conditions and throughput. The ADC in a receiver\ud
can consume up to 50% of the total baseband energy. Moreover, to\ud
reduce the overhead of Fountain codes, we apply message passing and\ud
Gaussian elimination in the decoder. In this way, the overhead is\ud
3% for a small block size (i.e. 500 packets). Using both methods\ud
results in an efficient system with low delay

Device and context influence on wireless infotainment access: A real world story
Copyright @ 2005 CEPISUser considerations are paramount when it comes to take up of technologies, and even more so in the case of mobile devices, in which the success of a particular device often depends on its novelty appeal. However, relatively little work has been undertaken exploring how day-to-day tasks are affected when mediated by such access devices. This paper reports the results of an empirical study placed in a 'real-world' setting, in which participants undertook typical infotainment - combined information and entertainment access tasks on three different wireless-enabled mobile devices. These were a laptop, a Personal Digital Assistant and a Head Mounted Display device. Our results show that, with the exception of participants' level of self-consciousness when using such devices in public environments, the user wireless infotainment access experience is generally unaffected by device type. Location was shown, though, to be a significant factor when users engage in tasks such as listening to online music or navigation
