Mobile Web services authentication using SAML and 3GPP generic bootstrapping architecture
In this paper we present a platform for the direct consumption of web services by a Mobile Station. We give an architectural solution where Mobile Operators play the role of Trusted Third Parties supplying service credentials that allow a co-located 3GPP Network Application Function and Liberty-enabled Identity Provider entity to implement a controlled Shopping Mall service to Mobile Stations from multiple trust domains. We consider both the protocol and the structure and syntax of the various tokens required to minimise service latency over the bandwidth and performance constrained mobile system, whilst providing adequate security services to protect against the perceived threat model. To validate our proposal we have developed code to create a Web Service test scenario using SAML authentication tokens utilising readily available J2ME, Java Card, J2SE and J2EE platforms, Web Services tools from Apache, the KToolBar emulator from Sun, and the JCOPS suite of tools for Java Card applet development
A Methodology for Engineering Collaborative and ad-hoc Mobile Applications using SyD Middleware
Todayâs web applications are more collaborative and utilize standard and ubiquitous Internet protocols. We have earlier developed System on Mobile Devices (SyD) middleware to rapidly develop and deploy collaborative applications over heterogeneous and possibly mobile devices hosting web objects. In this paper, we present the software engineering methodology for developing SyD-enabled web applications and illustrate it through a case study on two representative applications: (i) a calendar of meeting application, which is a collaborative application and (ii) a travel application which is an ad-hoc collaborative application. SyD-enabled web objects allow us to create a collaborative application rapidly with limited coding effort. In this case study, the modular software architecture allowed us to hide the inherent heterogeneity among devices, data stores, and networks by presenting a uniform and persistent object view of mobile objects interacting through XML/SOAP requests and responses. The performance results we obtained show that the application scales well as we increase the group size and adapts well within the constraints of mobile devices
Accessible user interface support for multi-device ubiquitous applications: architectural modifiability considerations
The market for personal computing devices is rapidly expanding from PC, to mobile, home entertainment systems, and even the automotive industry. When developing software targeting such ubiquitous devices, the balance between development costs and market coverage has turned out to be a challenging issue. With the rise of Web technology and the Internet of things, ubiquitous applications have become a reality. Nonetheless, the diversity of presentation and interaction modalities still drastically limit the number of targetable devices and the accessibility toward end users. This paper presents webinos, a multi-device application middleware platform founded on the Future Internet infrastructure. Hereto, the platform's architectural modifiability considerations are described and evaluated as a generic enabler for supporting applications, which are executed in ubiquitous computing environments
A FRAMEWORK FOR INTELLIGENT VOICE-ENABLED E-EDUCATION SYSTEMS
Although the Internet has received significant attention in recent years, voice is still the most convenient and natural way of communicating between human to human or
human to computer. In voice applications, users may have different needs which will require the ability of the system to reason, make decisions, be flexible and adapt to
requests during interaction. These needs have placed new requirements in voice application development such as use of advanced models, techniques and methodologies which take into account the needs of different users and environments. The ability of a system to behave close to human reasoning is often mentioned as one of the major requirements for the development of voice applications.
In this paper, we present a framework for an intelligent voice-enabled e-Education application and an adaptation of the framework for the development of a prototype Course Registration and Examination (CourseRegExamOnline) module. This study is a preliminary report of an ongoing e-Education project containing the following modules: enrollment, course registration and examination, enquiries/information, messaging/collaboration, e-Learning and library.
The CourseRegExamOnline module was developed using VoiceXML for the voice user interface(VUI), PHP for the web user interface (WUI), Apache as the middle-ware and MySQL database as back-end. The system would offer dual access modes using the VUI and WUI.
The framework would serve as a reference model for developing voice-based e-Education applications. The e-Education system when fully developed would meet the
needs of students who are normal users and those with certain forms of disabilities such as visual impairment, repetitive strain injury (RSI), etc, that make reading and

Flare: Architecture for rapid and easy development of Internet-based Applications
We propose an architecture, Flare, that is a structured and easy way to
develop applications rapidly, in a multitude of languages, which make use of
online storage of data and management of users. The architecture eliminates the
need for server-side programming in most cases, creation and management of
online database storage servers, re-creation of user management schemes and
writing a lot of unnecessary code for accessing different web-based services
using their APIs. A Web API provides a common API for various web-based
services like Blogger [2], Wordpress, MSN Live, Facebook [3] etc. Access
Libraries provided for major programming languages and platforms make it easy
to develop applications using the Flare Web Service. We demonstrate a simple
micro-blogging service developed using these APIs in two modes: a graphical
browser-based mode, and a command-line mode in C++, which provide two different

Forum Session at the First International Conference on Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC03)
The First International Conference on Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC) was held in Trento, December 15-18, 2003. The focus of the conference ---Service Oriented Computing (SOC)--- is the new emerging paradigm for distributed computing and e-business processing that has evolved from object-oriented and component computing to enable building agile networks of collaborating business applications distributed within and across organizational boundaries. Of the 181 papers submitted to the ICSOC conference, 10 were selected for the forum session which took place on December the 16th, 2003. The papers were chosen based on their technical quality, originality, relevance to SOC and for their nature of being best suited for a poster presentation or a demonstration. This technical report contains the 10 papers presented during the forum session at the ICSOC conference. In particular, the last two papers in the report ere submitted as industrial papers
AndroShield:automated Android applications vulnerability detection, a hybrid static and dynamic analysis approach
The security of mobile applications has become a major research field which is associated with a lot of challenges. The high rate of developing mobile applications has resulted in less secure applications. This is due to what is called the ârush to releaseâ as defined by Ponemon Institute. Security testingâwhich is considered one of the main phases of the development life cycleâis either not performed or given minimal time; hence, there is a need for security testing automation. One of the techniques used is Automated Vulnerability Detection. Vulnerability detection is one of the security tests that aims at pinpointing potential security leaks. Fixing those leaks results in protecting smart-phones and tablet mobile device users against attacks. This paper focuses on building a hybrid approach of static and dynamic analysis for detecting the vulnerabilities of Android applications. This approach is capsuled in a usable platform (web application) to make it easy to use for both public users and professional developers. Static analysis, on one hand, performs code analysis. It does not require running the application to detect vulnerabilities. Dynamic analysis, on the other hand, detects the vulnerabilities that are dependent on the run-time behaviour of the application and cannot be detected using static analysis. The model is evaluated against different applications with different security vulnerabilities. Compared with other detection platforms, our model detects information leaks as well as insecure network requests alongside other commonly detected flaws that harm usersâ privacy. ENHANCING USERSâ EXPERIENCE WITH SMART MOBILE TECHNOLOGY
The aim of this thesis is to investigate mobile guides for use with smartphones. Mobile guides have been successfully used to provide information, personalisation and navigation for the user. The researcher also wanted to ascertain how and in what ways mobile guides can enhance users' experience.
This research involved designing and developing web based applications to run on smartphones. Four studies were conducted, two of which involved testing of the particular application. The applications tested were a museum mobile guide application and a university mobile guide mapping application. Initial testing examined the prototype work for the âChronology of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiahâ application. The results were used to assess the potential of using similar mobile guides in Brunei Darussalamâs museums. The second study involved testing of the âKent LiveMapâ application for use at the University of Kent. Students at the university tested this mapping application, which uses crowdsourcing of information to provide live data. The results were promising and indicate that users' experience was enhanced when using the application.
Overall results from testing and using the two applications that were developed as part of this thesis show that mobile guides have the potential to be implemented in Brunei Darussalamâs museums and on campus at the University of Kent. However, modifications to both applications are required to fulfil their potential and take them beyond the prototype stage in order to be fully functioning and commercially viable
