This research focused on the scriptural justification on the quest for knowledge (including modern education knowledge) in Islam. The study presented justifications from the Holy Qur’an and the Hadith, corroborated with biographical references regarding the manifestations in Nigeria and Pakistan. Generally in Islam, Quran (Muslims’ Holy Book) and Hadith (teachings of Prophet Mohammed, Peace Be Upon Him-PBUH) provide guidance and direction for the Muslims in their undertakings and lifestyles. Both scriptures enjoin all Muslims to be knowledgeable; since knowledge in itself is central to Islam. The study adopted historical research method on the argument for the positive disposition of Islam to the quest for knowledge, with evidences from the two scriptures. Early efforts of the Muslims in pioneering several fields of modern education (knowledge); delving into the areas of medicine, mathematics, chemistry, geography, history, astronomy, biology etc were portrayed. The biographic peculiarities and contributions of Muslim individuals internationally and as evidenced in the case of Nigeria and Pakistan formed parts of the findings discussed. The study therefore concluded that there is widespread misconception on the position of Islam and the negative perception of Muslims about seeking modern education or searching for knowledge, therefore dispelled the insinuation with facts and figures. Relevant recommendations were therefore made to all stakeholders, challenging them on redoubling their efforts to improve and sustain the feats already achieved which have launched Muslims in Nigeria and Pakistan to limelight as well educated professionals and experts in various fields of modern education endeavours. ABSTRACT Vocabulary is one of the components of English. To understand the language, people need to master vocabulary. Vocabulary mastery refers to how the teacher teaches students word lists. Students will understand the meaning of language in context if they master vocabulary. The first issue is that students experience difficulties mastering and remembering vocabulary. The second issue is that teachers only teach using one medium, making learning monotonous and making students uninterested. Therefore, researcher conducted research with the title “The Influence of Using Boggle Game Towards Students at The Ninth Grade One of Public Junior High School of 2022/2023”. The research method was quasi experimental design with the treatment held in three meetings for each class and it consisted of pretest, treatment and posttest. In the experimental class the researcher using Boggle Game as treatment and in control class the teacher using Flashcard. The population of this research was ninth grade students of SMPN 16 Bandar lampung. The researcher took the sample by using cluster random technique and the result is IX D as the experimental class and IX A as the control class. In collecting the data, the researcher used test. The researcher used instruments, pre-test and post-test. The instrument of this research was vocabulary test. After giving the post-test, the research analyzed the data by using SPSS to compute independent sample t-test. After the researcher analyzed the data using independent sample t-test, it was found that the result of Sig. (2-tailed) of the equal variance by 0.000 < α = 0.05. It means that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. Based on the computation, it can be concluded that there was influence of Using Boggle Game towards Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at the Ninth Grade of SMP Negeri 16 Bandar Lampung in the academic year of 2022/2023. Persian as Koine: Written Persian in World-Historical Perspective

    Get PDF
Persian emerged as the common language of court life and administration in the Islamic world east of Baghdad in the 8th and 9th centuries (2nd and 3rd centuries into the Islamic era). The process began in Khurasan, the large historical region of southwest-central Asia, which besides the northeast quadrant of modern Iran included most of modern Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan, and northern Afghanistan. Persian radiated out from the pre-Islamic cities that became new power centers, filling the vacuum left by the declining political (as distinct from symbolic) role of the Caliphate in Baghdad. Persian spread to its greatest extent five centuries later, under Mongol and Turkic administrations, when it stretched from the Balkans in the west to southern India in the south and along the trade routes into central China in the east. A century later, it began to give way to the rise of vernacular languages—first in the west, where the use of Ottoman Turkish increased in the 15th century. It finally declined significantly in the east in India in the 19th century, where the British replaced it formally with Urdu and English in 1835. Over the past century and a half Persian has undergone a process of functional transformation, passing into the status of a classical language, as locally people began to write in Pashto, Sindhi, Urdu, and other vernaculars in the peripheral territories of the Islamic world. In the 20th century, at the expense of losing its unitary identity and universally standard form, Persian achieved the modern status of national language in three countries—in Afghanistan, (where it was renamed dari), in Iran (as Fārsi), and in Tajikistan (where it was renamed tajiki, or tojiki when transliterated from Cyrillic). It is still spoken widely in Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and the southern littoral of the Persian Gulf, and continues to flourish among post-revolutionary diaspora communities in America, Asia, and Europe

Digital Publishing in Ghana: A Focus on Children's Ebooks

    Get PDF
Adopting a mixed methods approach consisting of interviews, focus group discussions and surveys, this thesis investigates the state of digital publishing in Ghana within the context of Rogers’ diffusion of innovation theory. With a focus on children’s ebooks, it examines publishers’, authors’ and readers’ levels of adoption of ebooks, and their motivations for, perceptions of, and challenges or barriers to, going digital or otherwise. It also assesses the state of digital infrastructure and human resource capacity in Ghana to support the growing ebook sector, and identifies the knowledge and skills deficit in the industry in order to inform the development of courses that will be incorporated into the BA Publishing Studies programme at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). This thesis reveals that the level of adoption of ebook publishing among publishers and authors was relatively low given the interest demonstrated by young readers. The latter were very interested in ebooks and read mainly foreign content because it was freely available and accessible online. Publishers’ and authors’ motivations for publishing ebooks include visibility, the opportunity to reach a much wider audience, and the novelty of publishing digitally to keep abreast of current trends so as to transform the local industry. Some barriers to adoption identified were the cost associated with acquiring infrastructure, the security of online content, inadequate information about ebooks, non-use of ebooks, and infrastructural challenges such as inconsistent electricity supply and poor Internet penetration. The thesis also identified an awareness disconnect between publishers and their local readers: publishers perceive ebooks to be for the international market and, as such, do not focus on promoting them in the local market; thus, local readers are not aware of the existence of ebooks. Expanding on Rogers’ adoption categories, two new categories were created, incidental adopters and perceptual late adopters, to accommodate individuals who do not fall within Rogers’ established adopter categories. To increase the spread of digital publishing and the uptake of ebooks in the Ghanaian book market, the thesis recommends the elimination of the barriers to adoption and, most importantly, advocates training and skills development to reduce the knowledge and skills deficit gap among publishers and authors
