Generating and Sampling Orbits for Lifted Probabilistic Inference
A key goal in the design of probabilistic inference algorithms is identifying
and exploiting properties of the distribution that make inference tractable.
Lifted inference algorithms identify symmetry as a property that enables
efficient inference and seek to scale with the degree of symmetry of a
probability model. A limitation of existing exact lifted inference techniques
is that they do not apply to non-relational representations like factor graphs.
In this work we provide the first example of an exact lifted inference
algorithm for arbitrary discrete factor graphs. In addition we describe a
lifted Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo algorithm that provably mixes rapidly in the
degree of symmetry of the distribution
Graph Theory and Networks in Biology
In this paper, we present a survey of the use of graph theoretical techniques
in Biology. In particular, we discuss recent work on identifying and modelling
the structure of bio-molecular networks, as well as the application of
centrality measures to interaction networks and research on the hierarchical
structure of such networks and network motifs. Work on the link between
structural network properties and dynamics is also described, with emphasis on
synchronization and disease propagation.Comment: 52 pages, 5 figures, Survey Pape
Fast performance estimation of block codes
Importance sampling is used in this paper to address the classical yet important problem of performance estimation of block codes. Simulation distributions that comprise discreteand continuous-mixture probability densities are motivated and used for this application. These mixtures are employed in concert with the so-called g-method, which is a conditional importance sampling technique that more effectively exploits knowledge of underlying input distributions. For performance estimation, the emphasis is on bit by bit maximum a-posteriori probability decoding, but message passing algorithms for certain codes have also been investigated. Considered here are single parity check codes, multidimensional product codes, and briefly, low-density parity-check codes. Several error rate results are presented for these various codes, together with performances of the simulation techniques
