The Cityscapes Dataset for Semantic Urban Scene Understanding
Visual understanding of complex urban street scenes is an enabling factor for
a wide range of applications. Object detection has benefited enormously from
large-scale datasets, especially in the context of deep learning. For semantic
urban scene understanding, however, no current dataset adequately captures the
complexity of real-world urban scenes.
To address this, we introduce Cityscapes, a benchmark suite and large-scale
dataset to train and test approaches for pixel-level and instance-level
semantic labeling. Cityscapes is comprised of a large, diverse set of stereo
video sequences recorded in streets from 50 different cities. 5000 of these
images have high quality pixel-level annotations; 20000 additional images have
coarse annotations to enable methods that leverage large volumes of
weakly-labeled data. Crucially, our effort exceeds previous attempts in terms
of dataset size, annotation richness, scene variability, and complexity. Our
accompanying empirical study provides an in-depth analysis of the dataset
characteristics, as well as a performance evaluation of several
state-of-the-art approaches based on our benchmark.Comment: Includes supplemental materia
A Comprehensive Study of ImageNet Pre-Training for Historical Document Image Analysis
Automatic analysis of scanned historical documents comprises a wide range of
image analysis tasks, which are often challenging for machine learning due to a
lack of human-annotated learning samples. With the advent of deep neural
networks, a promising way to cope with the lack of training data is to
pre-train models on images from a different domain and then fine-tune them on
historical documents. In the current research, a typical example of such
cross-domain transfer learning is the use of neural networks that have been
pre-trained on the ImageNet database for object recognition. It remains a
mostly open question whether or not this pre-training helps to analyse
historical documents, which have fundamentally different image properties when
compared with ImageNet. In this paper, we present a comprehensive empirical
survey on the effect of ImageNet pre-training for diverse historical document
analysis tasks, including character recognition, style classification,
manuscript dating, semantic segmentation, and content-based retrieval. While we
obtain mixed results for semantic segmentation at pixel-level, we observe a
clear trend across different network architectures that ImageNet pre-training
has a positive effect on classification as well as content-based retrieval
A Cross-Season Correspondence Dataset for Robust Semantic Segmentation
In this paper, we present a method to utilize 2D-2D point matches between
images taken during different image conditions to train a convolutional neural
network for semantic segmentation. Enforcing label consistency across the
matches makes the final segmentation algorithm robust to seasonal changes. We
describe how these 2D-2D matches can be generated with little human interaction
by geometrically matching points from 3D models built from images. Two
cross-season correspondence datasets are created providing 2D-2D matches across
seasonal changes as well as from day to night. The datasets are made publicly
available to facilitate further research. We show that adding the
correspondences as extra supervision during training improves the segmentation
performance of the convolutional neural network, making it more robust to

Play and Learn: Using Video Games to Train Computer Vision Models
Video games are a compelling source of annotated data as they can readily
provide fine-grained groundtruth for diverse tasks. However, it is not clear
whether the synthetically generated data has enough resemblance to the
real-world images to improve the performance of computer vision models in
practice. We present experiments assessing the effectiveness on real-world data
of systems trained on synthetic RGB images that are extracted from a video
game. We collected over 60000 synthetic samples from a modern video game with
similar conditions to the real-world CamVid and Cityscapes datasets. We provide
several experiments to demonstrate that the synthetically generated RGB images
can be used to improve the performance of deep neural networks on both image
segmentation and depth estimation. These results show that a convolutional
network trained on synthetic data achieves a similar test error to a network
that is trained on real-world data for dense image classification. Furthermore,
the synthetically generated RGB images can provide similar or better results
compared to the real-world datasets if a simple domain adaptation technique is
applied. Our results suggest that collaboration with game developers for an
accessible interface to gather data is potentially a fruitful direction for
