    Suppression of Mutual Interference in OFDM Based Overlay Systems

    Dual operative radar for vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure communication

    The research presented in this Thesis deals with the concepts of joint radar and communication system for automotive application. The novel systems developed include a joint radar and communication system based on the fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) and two interference mitigation frameworks. In the joint radar and communication system the FrFT is used to embed the data information into a radar waveform in order to obtain a signal sharing Linear Frequency Modulation (LFM) characteristics while allowing data transmission. Furthermore, in the proposed system multi user operations are allowed by assigning a specific order of the FrFT to each user. In this way, a fractional order division multiplexing can be implemented allowing the allocation of more than one user in the same frequency band with the advantage that the range resolution does not depend on the number of the users that share the same frequency band but only from the assigned of the FrFT. Remarkably, the predicted simulated radar performance of the proposed joint radar and communication system when using Binary Frequency Shift Keying (BFSK) encoding is not significantly affected by the transmitted data. In order to fully describe the proposed waveform design, the signal model when the bits of information are modulated using either BFSK or Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) encoding is derived. This signal model will result also useful in the interference mitigation frameworks. In multi user scenarios to prevent mutual radar interference caused by users that share the same frequency band at the same time, each user has to transmit waveforms that are uncorrelated with those of other users. However, due to spectrum limitations, the uncorrelated property cannot always be satisfied even by using fractional order division multiplexing, thus interference is unavoidable. In order to mitigate the interference, two frameworks are introduced. In a joint radar communication system, the radar also has access to the communication data. With a near-precision reconstruction of the communication signal, this interference can be subtracted. In these two frameworks the interfering signal can be reconstructed using the derived mathematical model of the proposed FrFT waveform. In the first framework the subtraction between the received and reconstructed interference signals is carried out in a coherent manner, where the amplitude and phase of the two signals are taken into account. The performance of this framework is highly depend on the correct estimation of the Doppler frequency of the interfering user. A small error on the Doppler frequency can lead to a lack of synchronization between the received and reconstructed signal. Consequently, the subtraction will not be performed in a correct way and further interference components can be introduced. In order to solve the problem of the lack of the synchronization an alternative framework is developed where the subtraction is carried out in non-coherent manner. In the proposed framework, the subtraction is carried out after that the received radar signal and the reconstructed interference are processed, respectively. The performance is tested on simulated and real signals.     Noise radar technology as an interference prevention method

    In some applications, such as automotive and marine/navigation, hundreds of radars may operate in a small environment (e.g., a road complex or a strait) and in an allocated frequency band with limited width. Therefore, a compatibility problem between different radars arises that is not easily solved by time, frequency, space, or polarization diversity. The advent of fast digital signal processing and signal generation techniques makes it possible to use waveform diversity to solve this problem that will be exacerbated in the next future. Ideal waveforms for the diversity are supplied by Noise Radar Technology (NRT), whose application is promising in some military applications as well as in the civilian applications considered in this paper. In addition to being orthogonal as much as possible, the random signals to be transmitted have to satisfy requirements concerning side lobe level and crest factor, calling for novel, original design and generation processes

    RadChat: Spectrum Sharing for Automotive Radar Interference Mitigation

    In the automotive sector, both radars and wireless communication are susceptible to interference. However, combining the radar and communication systems, i.e., radio frequency (RF) communications and sensing convergence, has the potential to mitigate interference in both systems. This article analyses the mutual interference of spectrally coexistent frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar and communication systems in terms of occurrence probability and impact, and introduces RadChat, a distributed networking protocol for mitigation of interference among FMCW based automotive radars, including self-interference, using radar and communication cooperation. The results show that RadChat can significantly reduce radar mutual interference in single-hop vehicular networks in less than 80 ms

    Reference-free amplitude-based WiFi passive sensing

    The parasitic exploitation of WiFi signals for passive sensing purposes is a topic that is attracting considerable interest in the scientific community. In an attempt at meeting the requirements for sensor compactness, easy deployment, and low cost, we resort to a non-coherent signal processing scheme that does not rely on the availability of a reference signal and relaxes the constraints on the sensor hardware implementation. Specifically, with the proposed strategy, the presence of a moving target echo is determined by detecting the amplitude modulation that it produces on the direct signal transmitted from the WiFi access point. We investigate the target discrimination capability of the resulting sensor against the competing interference background and we theoretically characterize the impact of undesired amplitude fluctuations in the received signal that are determined by causes other than the superposition of the target echo, thereby including the waveform properties. Hence, we propose different solutions to address the limitations identified, characterized by different complexities, and we investigate their advantages and drawbacks. The conceived signal processing schemes are thoroughly validated on both simulated and experimental data, collected in different operational scenarios

    Digital Signal Processing for Optical Communications and Coherent LiDAR

    Internet data traffic within data centre, access and metro networks is experiencing unprecedented growth driven by many data-intensive applications. Significant efforts have been devoted to the design and implementation of low-complexity digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms that are suitable for these short-reach optical links. In this thesis, a novel low-complexity frequency-domain (FD) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) equaliser with momentum-based gradient descent algorithm is proposed, capable of mitigating both static and dynamic impairments arising from the optical fibre. The proposed frequency-domain equaliser (FDE) also improves the robustness of the adaptive equaliser against feedback latencies which is the main disadvantage of FD adaptive equalisers under rapid channel variations. The development and maturity of optical fibre communication techniques over the past few decades have also been beneficial to many other fields, especially coherent light detection and ranging (LiDAR) techniques. Many applications of coherent LiDAR are also cost-sensitive, e.g., autonomous vehicles (AVs). Therefore, in this thesis, a low-cost and low-complexity single-photodiode-based coherent LiDAR system is investigated. The receiver sensitivity performance of this receiver architecture is assessed through both simulations and experiments, using two ranging waveforms known as double-sideband (DSB) amplitude-modulated chirp signal and single-sideband (SSB) frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) signals. Besides, the impact of laser phase noise on the ranging precision when operating within and beyond the laser coherence length is studied.
