Mining E-Learning Domain Concept Map from Academic Articles
Abstract Recent researches have demonstrated the importance of concept map and its versatile applications especially in e-Learning. For example, while designing adaptive learning materials, designers need to refer to the concept map of a subject domain. Moreover, concept maps can show the whole picture and core knowledge about a subject domain. Research from literature also suggests that graphical representation of domain knowledge can reduce the problems of information overload and learning disorientation for learners. However, construction of concept maps typically relied upon domain experts in the past; it is a time consuming and high cost task. Concept maps creation for emerging new domains such as e-Learning is even more challenging due to its ongoing development nature. The aim of this paper is to construct e-Learning domain concept maps from academic articles. We adopt some relevant journal articles and conference papers in e-Learning domain as data sources, and apply text-mining techniques to automatically construct concept maps for e-Learning domain. The constructed concept maps can provide a useful reference for researchers, who are new to the e-Leaning field, to study related issues, for teachers to design adaptive learning materials, and for learners to understand the whole picture of e-Learning domain knowledge
Learning Reputation in an Authorship Network
The problem of searching for experts in a given academic field is hugely
important in both industry and academia. We study exactly this issue with
respect to a database of authors and their publications. The idea is to use
Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to perform
topic modelling in order to find authors who have worked in a query field. We
then construct a coauthorship graph and motivate the use of influence
maximisation and a variety of graph centrality measures to obtain a ranked list
of experts. The ranked lists are further improved using a Markov Chain-based
rank aggregation approach. The complete method is readily scalable to large
datasets. To demonstrate the efficacy of the approach we report on an extensive
set of computational simulations using the Arnetminer dataset. An improvement
in mean average precision is demonstrated over the baseline case of simply
using the order of authors found by the topic models
Application of artificial neural network in market segmentation: A review on recent trends
Despite the significance of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) algorithm to
market segmentation, there is a need of a comprehensive literature review and a
classification system for it towards identification of future trend of market
segmentation research. The present work is the first identifiable academic
literature review of the application of neural network based techniques to
segmentation. Our study has provided an academic database of literature between
the periods of 2000-2010 and proposed a classification scheme for the articles.
One thousands (1000) articles have been identified, and around 100 relevant
selected articles have been subsequently reviewed and classified based on the
major focus of each paper. Findings of this study indicated that the research
area of ANN based applications are receiving most research attention and self
organizing map based applications are second in position to be used in
segmentation. The commonly used models for market segmentation are data mining,
intelligent system etc. Our analysis furnishes a roadmap to guide future
research and aid knowledge accretion and establishment pertaining to the
application of ANN based techniques in market segmentation. Thus the present
work will significantly contribute to both the industry and academic research
in business and marketing as a sustainable valuable knowledge source of market

The devices, experimental scaffolds, and biomaterials ontology (DEB): a tool for mapping, annotation, and analysis of biomaterials' data
The size and complexity of the biomaterials literature makes systematic data analysis an excruciating manual task. A practical solution is creating databases and information resources. Implant design and biomaterials research can greatly benefit from an open database for systematic data retrieval. Ontologies are pivotal to knowledge base creation, serving to represent and organize domain knowledge. To name but two examples, GO, the gene ontology, and CheBI, Chemical Entities of Biological Interest ontology and their associated databases are central resources to their respective research communities. The creation of the devices, experimental scaffolds, and biomaterials ontology (DEB), an open resource for organizing information about biomaterials, their design, manufacture, and biological testing, is described. It is developed using text analysis for identifying ontology terms from a biomaterials gold standard corpus, systematically curated to represent the domain's lexicon. Topics covered are validated by members of the biomaterials research community. The ontology may be used for searching terms, performing annotations for machine learning applications, standardized meta-data indexing, and other cross-disciplinary data exploitation. Unsupervised Extraction of Representative Concepts from Scientific Literature
This paper studies the automated categorization and extraction of scientific
concepts from titles of scientific articles, in order to gain a deeper
understanding of their key contributions and facilitate the construction of a
generic academic knowledgebase. Towards this goal, we propose an unsupervised,
domain-independent, and scalable two-phase algorithm to type and extract key
concept mentions into aspects of interest (e.g., Techniques, Applications,
etc.). In the first phase of our algorithm we propose PhraseType, a
probabilistic generative model which exploits textual features and limited POS
tags to broadly segment text snippets into aspect-typed phrases. We extend this
model to simultaneously learn aspect-specific features and identify academic
domains in multi-domain corpora, since the two tasks mutually enhance each
other. In the second phase, we propose an approach based on adaptor grammars to
extract fine grained concept mentions from the aspect-typed phrases without the
need for any external resources or human effort, in a purely data-driven
manner. We apply our technique to study literature from diverse scientific
domains and show significant gains over state-of-the-art concept extraction

Knowledge Search within a Company-WIKI
The usage of Wikis for the purpose of knowledge management within a business company is only of value if the stored information can be found easily. The fundamental characteristic of a Wiki, its easy and informal usage, results in large amounts of steadily changing, unstructured documents. The widely used full-text search often provides search results of insufficient accuracy. In this paper, we will present an approach likely to improve search quality, through the use of Semantic Web, Text Mining, and Case Based Reasoning (CBR) technologies. Search results are more precise and complete because, in contrast to full-text search, the proposed knowledge-based search operates on the semantic layer

Scoping a vision for formative e-assessment: a project report for JISC
Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning. If the relationship between teaching and learning were causal, i. e. if students always mastered the intended learning outcomes of a particular sequence of instruction, assessment would be superfluous. Experience and research suggest this is not the case: what is learnt can often be quite different from what is taught. Formative assessment is motivated by a concern with the elicitation of relevant information about student understanding and / or achievement, its interpretation and an exploration of how it can lead to actions that result in better learning. In the context of a policy drive towards technology-enhanced approaches to teaching and learning, the question of the role of digital technologies is key and it is the latter on which this project particularly focuses. The project and its deliverables have been informed by recent and relevant literature, in particular recent work by Black andIn this work, they put forward a framework which suggests that assessment for learning their term for formative assessment can be conceptualised as consisting of a number of aspects and five keystrategies. The key aspects revolve around the where the learner is going, where the learner is right now and how she can get there and examines the role played by the teacher, peers and the learner.
