    Mining unstructured software data

    Our thesis is that the analysis of unstructured data supports software understanding and evolution analysis, and complements the data mined from structured sources. To this aim, we implemented the necessary toolset and investigated methods for exploring, exposing, and exploiting unstructured data.To validate our thesis, we focused on development email data. We found two main challenges in using it to support program comprehension and software development: The disconnection between emails and code artifacts and the noisy and mixed-language nature of email content. We tackle these challenges proposing novel approaches. First, we devise lightweight techniques for linking email data to code artifacts. We use these techniques for creating a tool to support program comprehension with email data, and to create a new set of email based metrics to improve existing defect prediction approaches. Subsequently, we devise techniques for giving a structure to the content of email and we use this structure to conduct novel software analyses to support program comprehension. In this dissertation we show that unstructured data, in the form of development emails, is a valuable addition to structured data and, if correctly mined, can be used successfully to support software engineering activities

    Knowledge Discovery in Online Repositories: A Text Mining Approach

    Before the advent of the Internet, the newspapers were the prominent instrument of mobilization for independence and political struggles. Since independence in Nigeria, the political class has adopted newspapers as a medium of Political Competition and Communication. Consequently, most political information exists in unstructured form and hence the need to tap into it using text mining algorithm. This paper implements a text mining algorithm on some unstructured data format in some newspapers. The algorithm involves the following natural language processing techniques: tokenization, text filtering and refinement. As a follow-up to the natural language techniques, association rule mining technique of data mining is used to extract knowledge using the Modified Generating Association Rules based on Weighting scheme (GARW). The main contributions of the technique are that it integrates information retrieval scheme (Term Frequency Inverse Document Frequency) (for keyword/feature selection that automatically selects the most discriminative keywords for use in association rules generation) with Data Mining technique for association rules discovery. The program is applied to Pre-Election information gotten from the website of the Nigerian Guardian newspaper. The extracted association rules contained important features and described the informative news included in the documents collection when related to the concluded 2007 presidential election. The system presented useful information that could help sanitize the polity as well as protect the nascent democracy

    ChemTextMiner: An open source tool kit for mining medical literature abstracts

    Text mining involves recognizing patterns from a wealth of information hidden latent in unstructured text and deducing explicit relationships among data entities by using data mining tools. Text mining of Biomedical literature is essential for building biological network connecting genes, proteins, drugs, therapeutic categories, side effects etc. related to diseases of interest. We present an approach for textmining biomedical literature mostly in terms of not so obvious hidden relationships and build biological network applied for the textmining of important human diseases like MTB, Malaria, Alzheimer and Diabetes. The methods, tools and data used for building biological networks using a distributed computing environment previously used for ChemXtreme[1] and ChemStar[2] applications are also described

    Companies working on safety-critical projects must adhere to strict rules imposed by the domain, especially when human safety is involved. These projects need to be compliant to standard norms and regulations. Thus, all the process steps must be clearly documented in order to be verifiable for compliance in a later stage by an auditor. Nevertheless, documentation often comes in the form of manually written textual documents in different formats. Moreover, the project members use diverse proprietary tools. This makes it difficult for auditors to understand how the actual project was conducted. My research addresses the project mining problem by exploiting logs from project-generated artifacts, which come from software repositories used by the project team

    Mining for Significant Information from Unstructured and Structured Biological Data and Its Applications

    Massive amounts of biological data are being accumulated in science. Searching for significant meaningful information and patterns from different types of data is necessary towards gaining knowledge from these large amounts of data available to users. However, data mining techniques do not normally deal with significance. Integrating data mining techniques with standard statistical procedures provides a way for mining statistically signi- ficant, interesting information from both structured and unstructured data. In this dissertation, different algorithms for mining significant biological information from both unstructured and structured data are proposed. A weighted-density-based approach is presented for mining item data from unstructured textual representations. Different algorithms in the area of radiation hybrid mapping are developed for mining significant information from structured binary data. The proposed algorithms have different applications in the ordering problem in radiation hybrid mapping including: identifying unreliable markers, and building solid framework maps. Effectiveness of the proposed algorithms towards improving map stability is demonstrated. Map stability is determined based on resampling analysis. The proposed algorithms deal effectively and efficiently with multidimensional data and also reduce computational cost dramatically. Evaluation shows that the proposed algorithms outperform comparative methods in terms of both accuracy and computation cost

    Over 90% of the case data from police inquiries is stored as unstructured text in police databases. We use the combination of Formal Concept Analysis and Emergent Self Organizing Maps for exploring a dataset of unstructured police reports out of the Amsterdam-Amstelland police region in the Netherlands.
