A survey on Human Mobility and its applications
Human Mobility has attracted attentions from different fields of studies such
as epidemic modeling, traffic engineering, traffic prediction and urban
planning. In this survey we review major characteristics of human mobility
studies including from trajectory-based studies to studies using graph and
network theory. In trajectory-based studies statistical measures such as jump
length distribution and radius of gyration are analyzed in order to investigate
how people move in their daily life, and if it is possible to model this
individual movements and make prediction based on them. Using graph in mobility
studies, helps to investigate the dynamic behavior of the system, such as
diffusion and flow in the network and makes it easier to estimate how much one
part of the network influences another by using metrics like centrality
measures. We aim to study population flow in transportation networks using
mobility data to derive models and patterns, and to develop new applications in
predicting phenomena such as congestion. Human Mobility studies with the new
generation of mobility data provided by cellular phone networks, arise new
challenges such as data storing, data representation, data analysis and
computation complexity. A comparative review of different data types used in
current tools and applications of Human Mobility studies leads us to new
approaches for dealing with mentioned challenges
Modeling Taxi Drivers' Behaviour for the Next Destination Prediction
In this paper, we study how to model taxi drivers' behaviour and geographical
information for an interesting and challenging task: the next destination
prediction in a taxi journey. Predicting the next location is a well studied
problem in human mobility, which finds several applications in real-world
scenarios, from optimizing the efficiency of electronic dispatching systems to
predicting and reducing the traffic jam. This task is normally modeled as a
multiclass classification problem, where the goal is to select, among a set of
already known locations, the next taxi destination. We present a Recurrent
Neural Network (RNN) approach that models the taxi drivers' behaviour and
encodes the semantics of visited locations by using geographical information
from Location-Based Social Networks (LBSNs). In particular, RNNs are trained to
predict the exact coordinates of the next destination, overcoming the problem
of producing, in output, a limited set of locations, seen during the training
phase. The proposed approach was tested on the ECML/PKDD Discovery Challenge
2015 dataset - based on the city of Porto -, obtaining better results with
respect to the competition winner, whilst using less information, and on

PATH: Person Authentication using Trace Histories
In this paper, a solution to the problem of Active Authentication using trace
histories is addressed. Specifically, the task is to perform user verification
on mobile devices using historical location traces of the user as a function of
time. Considering the movement of a human as a Markovian motion, a modified
Hidden Markov Model (HMM)-based solution is proposed. The proposed method,
namely the Marginally Smoothed HMM (MSHMM), utilizes the marginal probabilities
of location and timing information of the observations to smooth-out the
emission probabilities while training. Hence, it can efficiently handle
unforeseen observations during the test phase. The verification performance of
this method is compared to a sequence matching (SM) method , a Markov
Chain-based method (MC) and an HMM with basic Laplace Smoothing (HMM-lap).
Experimental results using the location information of the UMD Active
Authentication Dataset-02 (UMDAA02) and the GeoLife dataset are presented. The
proposed MSHMM method outperforms the compared methods in terms of equal error
rate (EER). Additionally, the effects of different parameters on the proposed

Inferring Unusual Crowd Events From Mobile Phone Call Detail Records
The pervasiveness and availability of mobile phone data offer the opportunity
of discovering usable knowledge about crowd behaviors in urban environments.
Cities can leverage such knowledge in order to provide better services (e.g.,
public transport planning, optimized resource allocation) and safer cities.
Call Detail Record (CDR) data represents a practical data source to detect and
monitor unusual events considering the high level of mobile phone penetration,
compared with GPS equipped and open devices. In this paper, we provide a
methodology that is able to detect unusual events from CDR data that typically
has low accuracy in terms of space and time resolution. Moreover, we introduce
a concept of unusual event that involves a large amount of people who expose an
unusual mobility behavior. Our careful consideration of the issues that come
from coarse-grained CDR data ultimately leads to a completely general framework
that can detect unusual crowd events from CDR data effectively and efficiently.
Through extensive experiments on real-world CDR data for a large city in
Africa, we demonstrate that our method can detect unusual events with 16%
higher recall and over 10 times higher precision, compared to state-of-the-art
methods. We implement a visual analytics prototype system to help end users
analyze detected unusual crowd events to best suit different application
scenarios. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work on the
detection of unusual events from CDR data with considerations of its temporal
and spatial sparseness and distinction between user unusual activities and

DouFu: A Double Fusion Joint Learning Method For Driving Trajectory Representation
Driving trajectory representation learning is of great significance for
various location-based services, such as driving pattern mining and route
recommendation. However, previous representation generation approaches tend to
rarely address three challenges: 1) how to represent the intricate semantic
intentions of mobility inexpensively; 2) complex and weak spatial-temporal
dependencies due to the sparsity and heterogeneity of the trajectory data; 3)
route selection preferences and their correlation to driving behavior. In this
paper, we propose a novel multimodal fusion model, DouFu, for trajectory
representation joint learning, which applies multimodal learning and attention
fusion module to capture the internal characteristics of trajectories. We first
design movement, route, and global features generated from the trajectory data
and urban functional zones and then analyze them respectively with the
attention encoder or feed forward network. The attention fusion module
incorporates route features with movement features to create a better
spatial-temporal embedding. With the global semantic feature, DouFu produces a
comprehensive embedding for each trajectory. We evaluate representations
generated by our method and other baseline models on classification and
clustering tasks. Empirical results show that DouFu outperforms other models in
most of the learning algorithms like the linear regression and the support
vector machine by more than 10%.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure
An analytical framework to nowcast well-being using mobile phone data
An intriguing open question is whether measurements made on Big Data
recording human activities can yield us high-fidelity proxies of socio-economic
development and well-being. Can we monitor and predict the socio-economic
development of a territory just by observing the behavior of its inhabitants
through the lens of Big Data? In this paper, we design a data-driven analytical
framework that uses mobility measures and social measures extracted from mobile
phone data to estimate indicators for socio-economic development and
well-being. We discover that the diversity of mobility, defined in terms of
entropy of the individual users' trajectories, exhibits (i) significant
correlation with two different socio-economic indicators and (ii) the highest
importance in predictive models built to predict the socio-economic indicators.
Our analytical framework opens an interesting perspective to study human
behavior through the lens of Big Data by means of new statistical indicators
that quantify and possibly "nowcast" the well-being and the socio-economic
development of a territory
