Problem-Solving Knowledge Mining from Users’\ud Actions in an Intelligent Tutoring System
In an intelligent tutoring system (ITS), the domain expert should provide\ud
relevant domain knowledge to the tutor so that it will be able to guide the\ud
learner during problem solving. However, in several domains, this knowledge is\ud
not predetermined and should be captured or learned from expert users as well as\ud
intermediate and novice users. Our hypothesis is that, knowledge discovery (KD)\ud
techniques can help to build this domain intelligence in ITS. This paper proposes\ud
a framework to capture problem-solving knowledge using a promising approach\ud
of data and knowledge discovery based on a combination of sequential pattern\ud
mining and association rules discovery techniques. The framework has been implemented\ud
and is used to discover new meta knowledge and rules in a given domain\ud
which then extend domain knowledge and serve as problem space allowing\ud
the intelligent tutoring system to guide learners in problem-solving situations.\ud
Preliminary experiments have been conducted using the framework as an alternative\ud
to a path-planning problem solver in CanadarmTutor
Mining Event Logs to Support Workflow Resource Allocation
Workflow technology is widely used to facilitate the business process in
enterprise information systems (EIS), and it has the potential to reduce design
time, enhance product quality and decrease product cost. However, significant
limitations still exist: as an important task in the context of workflow, many
present resource allocation operations are still performed manually, which are
time-consuming. This paper presents a data mining approach to address the
resource allocation problem (RAP) and improve the productivity of workflow
resource management. Specifically, an Apriori-like algorithm is used to find
the frequent patterns from the event log, and association rules are generated
according to predefined resource allocation constraints. Subsequently, a
correlation measure named lift is utilized to annotate the negatively
correlated resource allocation rules for resource reservation. Finally, the
rules are ranked using the confidence measures as resource allocation rules.
Comparative experiments are performed using C4.5, SVM, ID3, Na\"ive Bayes and
the presented approach, and the results show that the presented approach is
effective in both accuracy and candidate resource recommendations.Comment: T. Liu et al., Mining event logs to support workflow resource

Software Defect Association Mining and Defect Correction Effort Prediction
Much current software defect prediction work concentrates on the number of defects remaining in software system. In this paper, we present association rule mining based methods to predict defect associations and defect-correction effort. This is to help developers detect software defects and assist project managers in allocating testing resources more effectively. We applied the proposed methods to the SEL defect data consisting of more than 200 projects over more than 15 years. The results show that for the defect association prediction, the accuracy is very high and the false negative rate is very low. Likewise for the defect-correction effort prediction, the accuracy for both defect isolation effort prediction and defect correction effort prediction are also high. We compared the defect-correction effort prediction method with other types of methods: PART, C4.5, and Na¨ıve Bayes and show that accuracy has been improved by at least 23%. We also evaluated the impact of support and confidence levels on prediction accuracy, false negative rate, false positive rate, and the number of rules. We found that higher support and confidence levels may not result in higher prediction accuracy, and a sufficient number of rules is a precondition for high prediction accuracy
