    A critical analysis of research potential, challenges and future directives in industrial wireless sensor networks

    In recent years, Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs) have emerged as an important research theme with applications spanning a wide range of industries including automation, monitoring, process control, feedback systems and automotive. Wide scope of IWSNs applications ranging from small production units, large oil and gas industries to nuclear fission control, enables a fast-paced research in this field. Though IWSNs offer advantages of low cost, flexibility, scalability, self-healing, easy deployment and reformation, yet they pose certain limitations on available potential and introduce challenges on multiple fronts due to their susceptibility to highly complex and uncertain industrial environments. In this paper a detailed discussion on design objectives, challenges and solutions, for IWSNs, are presented. A careful evaluation of industrial systems, deadlines and possible hazards in industrial atmosphere are discussed. The paper also presents a thorough review of the existing standards and industrial protocols and gives a critical evaluation of potential of these standards and protocols along with a detailed discussion on available hardware platforms, specific industrial energy harvesting techniques and their capabilities. The paper lists main service providers for IWSNs solutions and gives insight of future trends and research gaps in the field of IWSNs

    Data Aggregation Scheduling in Wireless Networks

    Data aggregation is one of the most essential data gathering operations in wireless networks. It is an efficient strategy to alleviate energy consumption and reduce medium access contention. In this dissertation, the data aggregation scheduling problem in different wireless networks is investigated. Since Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are one of the most important types of wireless networks and data aggregation plays a vital role in WSNs, the minimum latency data aggregation scheduling problem for multi-regional queries in WSNs is first studied. A scheduling algorithm is proposed with comprehensive theoretical and simulation analysis regarding time efficiency. Second, with the increasing popularity of Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs), data aggregation scheduling in CRNs is studied. Considering the precious spectrum opportunity in CRNs, a routing hierarchy, which allows a secondary user to seek a transmission opportunity among a group of receivers, is introduced. Several scheduling algorithms are proposed for both the Unit Disk Graph (UDG) interference model and the Physical Interference Model (PhIM), followed by performance evaluation through simulations. Third, the data aggregation scheduling problem in wireless networks with cognitive radio capability is investigated. Under the defined network model, besides a default working spectrum, users can access extra available spectrum through a cognitive radio. The problem is formalized as an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) problem and solved through an optimization method in the beginning. The simulation results show that the ILP based method has a good performance. However, it is difficult to evaluate the solution theoretically. A heuristic scheduling algorithm with guaranteed latency bound is presented in our further investigation. Finally, we investigate how to make use of cognitive radio capability to accelerate data aggregation in probabilistic wireless networks with lossy links. A two-phase scheduling algorithm is proposed, and the effectiveness of the algorithm is verified through both theoretical analysis and numerical simulations

    Survey on wireless technology trade-offs for the industrial internet of things

    Aside from vast deployment cost reduction, Industrial Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks (IWSAN) introduce a new level of industrial connectivity. Wireless connection of sensors and actuators in industrial environments not only enables wireless monitoring and actuation, it also enables coordination of production stages, connecting mobile robots and autonomous transport vehicles, as well as localization and tracking of assets. All these opportunities already inspired the development of many wireless technologies in an effort to fully enable Industry 4.0. However, different technologies significantly differ in performance and capabilities, none being capable of supporting all industrial use cases. When designing a network solution, one must be aware of the capabilities and the trade-offs that prospective technologies have. This paper evaluates the technologies potentially suitable for IWSAN solutions covering an entire industrial site with limited infrastructure cost and discusses their trade-offs in an effort to provide information for choosing the most suitable technology for the use case of interest. The comparative discussion presented in this paper aims to enable engineers to choose the most suitable wireless technology for their specific IWSAN deployment

    Optimal Number of Message Transmissions for Probabilistic Guarantee in the IoT

    International audienceThe Internet of Things (IoT) is now experiencing its first phase of industrialization. Industrial companies are completing proofs of concept and many of them plan to invest in automation, flexibility and quality of production in their plants. Their use of a wireless network is conditioned upon its ability to meet three Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), namely a maximum acceptable end-to-end latency L, a targeted end-to-end reliability R and a minimum network lifetime T. The IoT network has to guarantee that at least R% of messages generated by sensor nodes are delivered to the sink with a latency ≤ L, whereas the network lifetime is at least equal to T. In this paper, we show how to provide the targeted end-to-end reliability R by means of retransmissions to cope with the unreliability of wireless links. We present two methods to compute the maximum number of transmissions per message required to achieve R. M F air is very easy to compute, whereas M Opt minimizes the total number of transmissions necessary for a message to reach the sink. M F air and M Opt are then integrated into a TSCH network with a load-based scheduler to evaluate the three KPIs on a generic data-gathering application. We first consider a toy example with eight nodes where the maximum number of transmissions M axT rans is tuned per link and per flow. Finally, a network of 50 nodes, representative of real network deployments, is evaluated assuming M axT rans is fixed. For both TSCH networks, we show that M Opt provides a better reliability and a longer lifetime than M F air, which provides a shorter average end-to-end latency. M Opt provides more predictable end-to-end performances than Kausa, a KPI-aware, state-of-the-art scheduler

    Uav-assisted data collection in wireless sensor networks: A comprehensive survey

    Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are usually deployed to different areas of interest to sense phenomena, process sensed data, and take actions accordingly. The networks are integrated with many advanced technologies to be able to fulfill their tasks that is becoming more and more complicated. These networks tend to connect to multimedia networks and to process huge data over long distances. Due to the limited resources of static sensor nodes, WSNs need to cooperate with mobile robots such as unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in their developments. The mobile devices show their maneuverability, computational and energystorage abilities to support WSNs in multimedia networks. This paper addresses a comprehensive survey of almost scenarios utilizing UAVs and UGVs with strogly emphasising on UAVs for data collection in WSNs. Either UGVs or UAVs can collect data from static sensor nodes in the monitoring fields. UAVs can either work alone to collect data or can cooperate with other UAVs to increase their coverage in their working fields. Different techniques to support the UAVs are addressed in this survey. Communication links, control algorithms, network structures and different mechanisms are provided and compared. Energy consumption or transportation cost for such scenarios are considered. Opening issues and challenges are provided and suggested for the future developments
