    Characterization of system status signals for multivariate time series discretization based on frequency and amplitude variation

    Many fault detection methods have been proposed for monitoring the health of various industrial systems. Characterizing the monitored signals is a prerequisite for selecting an appropriate detection method. However, fault detection methods tend to be decided with user???s subjective knowledge or their familiarity with the method, rather than following a predefined selection rule. This study investigates the performance sensitivity of two detection methods, with respect to status signal characteristics of given systems: abrupt variance, characteristic indicator, discernable frequency, and discernable index. Relation between key characteristics indicators from four different real-world systems and the performance of two fault detection methods using pattern recognition are evaluated

    Aggregate Interference Modeling in Cognitive Radio Networks with Power and Contention Control

    In this paper, we present an interference model for cognitive radio (CR) networks employing power control, contention control or hybrid power/contention control schemes. For the first case, a power control scheme is proposed to govern the transmission power of a CR node. For the second one, a contention control scheme at the media access control (MAC) layer, based on carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA), is proposed to coordinate the operation of CR nodes with transmission requests. The probability density functions of the interference received at a primary receiver from a CR network are first derived numerically for these two cases. For the hybrid case, where power and contention controls are jointly adopted by a CR node to govern its transmission, the interference is analyzed and compared with that of the first two schemes by simulations. Then, the interference distributions under the first two control schemes are fitted by log-normal distributions with greatly reduced complexity. Moreover, the effect of a hidden primary receiver on the interference experienced at the receiver is investigated. It is demonstrated that both power and contention controls are effective approaches to alleviate the interference caused by CR networks.     A Survey and Comparison of Low-Cost Sensing Technologies for Road Traffic Monitoring

    Abstract This paper reviews low-cost vehicle and pedestrian detection methods and compares their accuracy. The main goal of this survey is to summarize the progress achieved to date and to help identify the sensing technologies that provide high detection accuracy and meet requirements related to cost and ease of installation. Special attention is paid to wireless battery-powered detectors of small dimensions that can be quickly and effortlessly installed alongside traffic lanes (on the side of a road or on a curb) without any additional supporting structures. The comparison of detection methods presented in this paper is based on results of experiments that were conducted with a variety of sensors in a wide range of configurations. During experiments various sensor sets were analyzed. It was shown that the detection accuracy can be significantly improved by fusing data from appropriately selected set of sensors. The experimental results reveal that accurate vehicle detection can be achieved by using sets of passive sensors. Application of active sensors was necessary to obtain satisfactory results in case of pedestrian detection
