    A Nonlinear Model Predictive Control Scheme for Cooperative Manipulation with Singularity and Collision Avoidance

    This paper addresses the problem of cooperative transportation of an object rigidly grasped by NN robotic agents. In particular, we propose a Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) scheme that guarantees the navigation of the object to a desired pose in a bounded workspace with obstacles, while complying with certain input saturations of the agents. Moreover, the proposed methodology ensures that the agents do not collide with each other or with the workspace obstacles as well as that they do not pass through singular configurations. The feasibility and convergence analysis of the NMPC are explicitly provided.     Communication-based Decentralized Cooperative Object Transportation Using Nonlinear Model Predictive Control

    This paper addresses the problem of cooperative transportation of an object rigidly grasped by N robotic agents.     Manipulation of flexible structural modules by space robots during LSS construction

Such Large Space Structures (LSS) will be constructed in-orbit, probably by assembling large structural modules. This is a dangerous and difficult task for humans. On the other hand, this is a challenging and promising application for space robotics. This work provides a planning and control architecture for the manipulation of a large flexible structural module in the proximity of the LSS, by a team of space manipulators that are mounted on the LSS. In this task, the payload (module) and the base structure (LSS) of the robots are assumed to be very compliant. Interface forces between robots and flexible structures induce undesirable vibration. The approach developed here is to plan and control the forces that robots apply to the flexible structures so that they maneuver the module precisely while exciting low levels of residual vibration in the module and the LSS. Robot use different control implementations to control the forces they apply to different kinds of flexible structures. Robots plan and control cooperatively the forces they apply to the module.(cont.) Each robot exploits its redundancy to minimize the base reaction forces it applies to the LSS and to avoid undesirable configurations.     HERMIES-3: A step toward autonomous mobility, manipulation, and perception

    HERMIES-III is an autonomous robot comprised of a seven degree-of-freedom (DOF) manipulator designed for human scale tasks, a laser range finder, a sonar array, an omni-directional wheel-driven chassis, multiple cameras, and a dual computer system containing a 16-node hypercube expandable to 128 nodes. The current experimental program involves performance of human-scale tasks (e.g., valve manipulation, use of tools), integration of a dexterous manipulator and platform motion in geometrically complex environments, and effective use of multiple cooperating robots (HERMIES-IIB and HERMIES-III). The environment in which the robots operate has been designed to include multiple valves, pipes, meters, obstacles on the floor, valves occluded from view, and multiple paths of differing navigation complexity. The ongoing research program supports the development of autonomous capability for HERMIES-IIB and III to perform complex navigation and manipulation under time constraints, while dealing with imprecise sensory information

    Control algorithm implementation for a redundant degree of freedom manipulator

    This project's purpose is to develop and implement control algorithms for a kinematically redundant robotic manipulator. The manipulator is being developed concurrently by Odetics Inc., under internal research and development funding. This SBIR contract supports algorithm conception, development, and simulation, as well as software implementation and integration with the manipulator hardware. The Odetics Dexterous Manipulator is a lightweight, high strength, modular manipulator being developed for space and commercial applications. It has seven fully active degrees of freedom, is electrically powered, and is fully operational in 1 G. The manipulator consists of five self-contained modules. These modules join via simple quick-disconnect couplings and self-mating connectors which allow rapid assembly/disassembly for reconfiguration, transport, or servicing. Each joint incorporates a unique drive train design which provides zero backlash operation, is insensitive to wear, and is single fault tolerant to motor or servo amplifier failure. The sensing system is also designed to be single fault tolerant. Although the initial prototype is not space qualified, the design is well-suited to meeting space qualification requirements. The control algorithm design approach is to develop a hierarchical system with well defined access and interfaces at each level. The high level endpoint/configuration control algorithm transforms manipulator endpoint position/orientation commands to joint angle commands, providing task space motion. At the same time, the kinematic redundancy is resolved by controlling the configuration (pose) of the manipulator, using several different optimizing criteria. The center level of the hierarchy servos the joints to their commanded trajectories using both linear feedback and model-based nonlinear control techniques. The lowest control level uses sensed joint torque to close torque servo loops, with the goal of improving the manipulator dynamic behavior. The control algorithms are subjected to a dynamic simulation before implementation
