Minimizing the maximum starting time on-line
We study the scheduling problem of minimizing the maximum starting time on-line. The goal is to minimize the last time that a job starts. We show that while the greedy algorithm has a competitive ratio of , we can give a constant competitive algorithm for this problem. We also show that the greedy algorithm is optimal for resource augmentation in the sense that it requires 2m-1 machines to have a competitive ratio of 1, whereas no algorithm can achieve this with 2m-1 machines
Group Evacuation on a Line by Agents with Different Communication Abilities
We consider evacuation of a group of n ? 2 autonomous mobile agents (or robots) from an unknown exit on an infinite line. The agents are initially placed at the origin of the line and can move with any speed up to the maximum speed 1 in any direction they wish and they all can communicate when they are co-located. However, the agents have different wireless communication abilities: while some are fully wireless and can send and receive messages at any distance, a subset of the agents are senders, they can only transmit messages wirelessly, and the rest are receivers, they can only receive messages wirelessly. The agents start at the same time and their communication abilities are known to each other from the start. Starting at the origin of the line, the goal of the agents is to collectively find a target/exit at an unknown location on the line while minimizing the evacuation time, defined as the time when the last agent reaches the target.
We investigate the impact of such a mixed communication model on evacuation time on an infinite line for a group of cooperating agents. In particular, we provide evacuation algorithms and analyze the resulting competitive ratio (CR) of the evacuation time for such a group of agents. If the group has two agents of two different types, we give an optimal evacuation algorithm with competitive ratio CR = 3+2?2. If there is a single sender or fully wireless agent, and multiple receivers we prove that CR ? [2+?5,5], and if there are multiple senders and a single receiver or fully wireless agent, we show that CR ? [3,5.681319]. Any group consisting of only senders or only receivers requires competitive ratio 9, and any other combination of agents has competitive ratio 3
Multi-objective model for optimizing railway infrastructure asset renewal
Trabalho inspirado num problema real da empresa Infraestruturas de Portugal, EP.A multi-objective model for managing railway infrastructure asset renewal is presented. The model aims to optimize three objectives, while respecting operational constraints: levelling investment throughout multiple years, minimizing total cost and minimizing work start postponements. Its output is an optimized intervention schedule. The model is based on a case study from a Portuguese infrastructure management company, which specified the objectives and constraints, and reflects management practice on railway infrastructure. The results show that investment levelling greatly influences the other objectives and that total cost fluctuations may range from insignificant to important, depending on the condition of the infrastructure. The results structure is argued to be general and suggests a practical methodology for analysing trade-offs and selecting a solution for implementation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
An efficient method for multiobjective optimal control and optimal control subject to integral constraints
We introduce a new and efficient numerical method for multicriterion optimal
control and single criterion optimal control under integral constraints. The
approach is based on extending the state space to include information on a
"budget" remaining to satisfy each constraint; the augmented
Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman PDE is then solved numerically. The efficiency of our
approach hinges on the causality in that PDE, i.e., the monotonicity of
characteristic curves in one of the newly added dimensions. A semi-Lagrangian
"marching" method is used to approximate the discontinuous viscosity solution
efficiently. We compare this to a recently introduced "weighted sum" based
algorithm for the same problem. We illustrate our method using examples from
flight path planning and robotic navigation in the presence of friendly and
adversarial observers.Comment: The final version accepted by J. Comp. Math. : 41 pages, 14 figures.

Quantum Monte Carlo for minimum energy structures
We present an efficient method to find minimum energy structures using energy
estimates from accurate quantum Monte Carlo calculations. This method involves
a stochastic process formed from the stochastic energy estimates from Monte
Carlo that can be averaged to find precise structural minima while using
inexpensive calculations with moderate statistical uncertainty. We demonstrate
the applicability of the algorithm by minimizing the energy of the H2O-OH-
complex and showing that the structural minima from quantum Monte Carlo
calculations affect the qualitative behavior of the potential energy surface
substantially.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
