Equalization of doubly selective channels using iterative and recursive methods
Novel iterative and recursive schemes for the equalization of time-varying frequency selective channels are proposed. Such doubly selective channels are shown to be common place in mobile communication systems, for example in second generation systems based on time division multiple access (TDMA) and so-called beyond third generation systems most probably utilizing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). A new maximum likelihood approach for the estimation of the complex multipath gains (MGs) and the real Doppler spreads (DSs) of a parametrically modelled doubly selective single input single output (SISO) channel is derived. Considerable complexity reduction is achieved by exploiting the statistical properties of the training sequence in a TDMA system. The Cramer-Rao lower bound for the resulting estimator is derived and simulation studies are employed to confirm the statistical efficiency of the scheme. A similar estimation scheme is derived for the MGs and DSs in the context of a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) TDMA system. A computationally efficient recursive equalization scheme for both a SISO and MIMO TDMA system which exploits the estimated MGs and DSs is derived on the basis of repeated application of the matrix inversion lemma. Bit error rate (BER) simulations confirm the advantage of this scheme over equalizers which have limited knowledge of such parameters. For OFDM transmission over a general random doubly selective SISO channel, the time selectivity is mitigated with an innovative relatively low complexity iterative method. Equalization is in effect split into two stages: one which exploits the sparsity in the associated channel convolution matrix and a second which performs a posteriori detection of the frequency domain symbols. These two procedures interact in an iterative manner, exchanging information between the time and frequency domains. Simulation studies show that the performance of the scheme approaches the matched filter bound when interleaving is also introduced to aid in decorrelation. Finally, to overcome the peak to average power problem in conventional OFDM transmission, the iterative approach is extended for single carrier with cyclic prefix (SCCP) systems. The resulting scheme has particularly low complexity and is shown by simulation to have robust performance.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo
Physical Layer Techniques for Wireless Communication Systems
The increasing diffusion of mobile devices requiring, everywhere and every time, reliable connections able to support the more common applications, induced in the last years the deployment of telecommunication networks based on technologies capable to respond effectively to the ever-increasing market demand, still a long way off from saturation level.
Multicarrier transmission techniques employed in standards for local networks (Wi-Fi) and metropolitan networks (WiMAX) and for many years hot research topic, have been definitely adopted beginning from the fourth generation of cellular systems (LTE). The adoption of multicarrier signaling techniques if on one hand has brought significant advantages to counteract the detrimental effects in environments with particularly harsh propagation channel, on the other hand, has imposed very strict requirements on sensitivity to recovery errors of the carrier frequency offset (CFO) due to the resulting impact on correct signal detection.
The main focus of the thesis falls in this area, investigating some aspects relating to synchronization procedures for system based on multicarrier signaling. Particular reference will be made to a network entry procedure for LTE networks and to CFO recovery for OFDM, fltered multitone modulation and direct conversion receivers.
Other contributions pertaining to physical layer issues for communication systems,
both radio and over acoustic carrier, conclude the thesis

SYNCHRONIZATION AND RESOURCE ALLOCATION IN DOWNLINK OFDM SYSTEMS
The next generation (4G) wireless systems are expected to provide
universal personal and multimedia communications with seamless connection
and very high rate transmissions and without regard to the users’ mobility and
location. OFDM technique is recognized as one of the leading candidates to
provide the wireless signalling for 4G systems. The major challenges in
downlink multiuser OFDM based 4G systems include the wireless channel, the
synchronization and radio resource management. Thus algorithms are required
to achieve accurate timing and frequency offset estimation and the efficient
utilization of radio resources such as subcarrier, bit and power allocation.
The objectives of the thesis are of two fields. Firstly, we presented the
frequency offset estimation algorithms for OFDM systems. Building our work
upon the classic single user OFDM architecture, we proposed two FFT-based
frequency offset estimation algorithms with low computational complexity.
The computer simulation results and comparisons show that the proposed
algorithms provide smaller error variance than previous well-known algorithm.
Secondly, we presented the resource allocation algorithms for OFDM
systems. Building our work upon the downlink multiuser OFDM architecture,
we aimed to minimize the total transmit power by exploiting the system
diversity through the management of subcarrier allocation, adaptive
modulation and power allocation. Particularly, we focused on the dynamic
resource allocation algorithms for multiuser OFDM system and multiuser
MIMO-OFDM system. For the multiuser OFDM system, we proposed a lowiv
complexity channel gain difference based subcarrier allocation algorithm. For
the multiuser MIMO-OFDM system, we proposed a unit-power based
subcarrier allocation algorithm. These proposed algorithms are all combined
with the optimal bit allocation algorithm to achieve the minimal total transmit
power. The numerical results and comparisons with various conventional nonadaptive
and adaptive algorithmic approaches are provided to show that the
proposed resource allocation algorithms improve the system efficiencies and
performance given that the Quality of Service (QoS) for each user is
guaranteed.

Frequency estimation for single-carrier and OFDM signals in communication and radar systems
der folgenden 4 Punkte definiert: i) Genauigkeit,
geringes Fading auftritt, eignen.Estimating the frequency of a signal embedded in additive white
Gaussian noise is one of the classical problems in signal
processing. It is of fundamental importance in various
applications such as in communications, Doppler radar,
synthetic aperture radar (SAR), array processing, radio
frequency identification (RFID), resonance sensor, etc.
The requirement on the performance of the frequency estimator
varies with the application. The performance is often defined
using four indexes: i). estimation accuracy, ii).
estimation range, iii). estimation threshold, and
iv). implementation complexity. These indexes may be in
contrast with each other. For example, achieving a low threshold
usually implies a high complexity. Likewise, good estimation
accuracy is often obtained at the price of a narrow estimation
range. The estimation becomes even more difficult in the presence
of fading-induced multiplicative noise which is considered to be
the general case of the frequency estimation problem. There have
been a lot of efforts in deriving the estimator for the general
case, however, a generalized estimator that fulfills all indexes
can be hardly obtained.
Focusing on communications and radar applications, this thesis
proposes a new generalized closed-form frequency estimator that
compromises all performance indexes. The derivation of the
proposed estimator relies on the nonlinear least-squares principle
in conjunction with the well known summation-by-parts formula. In
addition to this, several modified frequency estimators suitable
for non-fading or very slow fading scenarios, are also introduced
in this thesis
Bit error rate estimation in WiMAX communications at vehicular speeds using Nakagami-m fading model
The wireless communication industry has experienced a rapid technological evolution from its basic first generation (1G) wireless systems to the latest fourth generation (4G) wireless broadband systems. Wireless broadband systems are becoming increasingly popular with consumers and the technological strength of 4G has played a major role behind the success of wireless broadband systems. The IEEE 802.16m standard of the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) has been accepted as a 4G standard by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 2011. The IEEE 802.16m is fully optimised for wireless communications in fixed environments and can deliver very high throughput and excellent quality of service. In mobile communication environments however, WiMAX consumers experience a graceful degradation of service as a direct function of vehicular speeds. At high vehicular speeds, the throughput drops in WiMAX systems and unless proactive measures such as forward error control and packet size optimisation are adopted and properly adjusted, many applications cannot be facilitated at high vehicular speeds in WiMAX communications. For any proactive measure, bit error rate estimation as a function of vehicular speed, serves as a useful tool. In this thesis, we present an analytical model for bit error rate estimation in WiMAX communications using the Nakagami-m fading model. We also show, through an analysis of the data collected from a practical WiMAX system, that the Nakagami-m model can be made adaptive as a function of speed, to represent fading in fixed environments as well as mobile environments
OFDM under Oscillator Phase Noise : Contributions to Analysis and Estimation Methods
Most modern transmitters and receivers involve an analog front-end unit and a digital back-end unit. The digital back-end is responsible for information processing which involves thefollowing: redundancy removal from information; information representation; improvinginformation resilience; and information correction. The analog front-end is responsible forinformation transmission and reception. The information processing algorithms developedand implemented in the digital back-end assume a linear and noiseless analog front-end which,in reality, is not the case. This renders some of the information processing algorithms to be lesseffective in practice. The focus of this thesis is on orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing(OFDM) systems under the influence of oscillator phase noise. OFDM is an efficientinformation representation technique used in many communication systems. On the otherhand, phase noise is one type of undesired noise that occurs in the oscillator device used in theanalog front-end. It arises due to the imperfect task of frequency conversion, performed by theoscillator device, between baseband and radio frequency.Â
This thesis contributes to the areas of analysis and estimation in OFDM systems under theinfluence of oscillator phase noise. With regard to analysis, this thesis contributes by derivingthe channel capacity assuming a Gaussian input alphabet. The aim here is to show bothquantitatively and qualitatively the degradation in performance of the OFDM system in thepresence of phase noise. The analysis is conducted for phase noise processes that occur in bothfree-running and phase-locked loop based oscillators and also extended to include the effect ofcarrier frequency offset. With regard to estimation, two new phase noise estimation algorithmsare proposed in this thesis. In particular, these algorithms restrict the search space to a specific subset, where the desired phase noise parameter of interest is shown to lie. For example, in the first estimation method, possible subspaces in which the desired phase noise spectral vector may lie are used in the estimation step. In the second method, the geometry of the desired phase noise spectral vector is used in the estimation step. Specifically, this geometry corresponds to a non-convex set described by a set of quadratic forms that involve permutation matrices. By restricting the search space to this set, the accuracy of phase noise estimation can be improved
A Novel Synchronization Method in Terahertz Large-Scale Antenna Array System
We focus on the problems of the accurate time delay estimation, the design of training pilots, and hybrid matrix optimization within the large-scale antenna array Terahertz (THz) broadband communication system. In contrast to the existing researches based on narrow-band arrays, we hereby shed light on the time delay estimation of broadband arrays. In THz broadband communication systems, the data symbol duration is relatively short when comparing with the dimension of the antenna array. In large-scale antenna systems, signals received in each antenna are no longer different phase-shifted copies of the same symbol, but completely different symbols in which occasion traditional narrow-band structure is no longer suitable. Based on the above conclusion, firstly, we put forward a system model based on large-scale antenna arrays and Time delay line (TDL) structure. Secondly, we deduce the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of the time delay estimation, and present a time delay estimation algorithm that could reach the CRLB. Thirdly, by minimizing the CRLB, we address the design of the training pilot and optimized TDL structure under the condition of constant envelope training pilot and modulus TDL structure. Finally, we disclose the numerical simulation results. According to the simulation results, the aforementioned method is workable in reaching the CRLB, the TDL structure can significantly surpass that of the traditional model, and the optimal pilot design method outperforms the pseudo-random pilot structure
Radar Signal Processing for Interference Mitigation
It is necessary for radars to suppress interferences to near the noise level to achieve the best performance in target detection and measurements. In this dissertation work, innovative signal processing approaches are proposed to effectively mitigate two of the most common types of interferences: jammers and clutter. Two types of radar systems are considered for developing new signal processing algorithms: phased-array radar and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. For phased-array radar, an innovative target-clutter feature-based recognition approach termed as Beam-Doppler Image Feature Recognition (BDIFR) is proposed to detect moving targets in inhomogeneous clutter. Moreover, a new ground moving target detection algorithm is proposed for airborne radar. The essence of this algorithm is to compensate for the ground clutter Doppler shift caused by the moving platform and then to cancel the Doppler-compensated clutter using MTI filters that are commonly used in ground-based radar systems. Without the need of clutter estimation, the new algorithms outperform the conventional Space-Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) algorithm in ground moving target detection in inhomogeneous clutter.
For MIMO radar, a time-efficient reduced-dimensional clutter suppression algorithm termed as Reduced-dimension Space-time Adaptive Processing (RSTAP) is proposed to minimize the number of the training samples required for clutter estimation. To deal with highly heterogeneous clutter more effectively, we also proposed a robust deterministic STAP algorithm operating on snapshot-to-snapshot basis. For cancelling jammers in the radar mainlobe direction, an innovative jamming elimination approach is proposed based on coherent MIMO radar adaptive beamforming. When combined with mutual information (MI) based cognitive radar transmit waveform design, this new approach can be used to enable spectrum sharing effectively between radar and wireless communication systems.
The proposed interference mitigation approaches are validated by carrying out simulations for typical radar operation scenarios. The advantages of the proposed interference mitigation methods over the existing signal processing techniques are demonstrated both analytically and empirically
