Discrete curvature approximations and segmentation of polyhedral surfaces
The segmentation of digitized data to divide a free form surface into patches is one of the key steps required to perform a reverse engineering process of an object. To this end, discrete curvature approximations are introduced as the basis of a segmentation process that lead to a decomposition of digitized data into areas that will help the construction of parametric surface patches. The approach proposed relies on the use of a polyhedral representation of the object built from the digitized data input. Then, it is shown how noise reduction, edge swapping techniques and adapted remeshing schemes can participate to different preparation phases to provide a geometry that highlights useful characteristics for the segmentation process. The segmentation process is performed with various approximations of discrete curvatures evaluated on the polyhedron produced during the preparation phases. The segmentation process proposed involves two phases: the identification of characteristic polygonal lines and the identification of polyhedral areas useful for a patch construction process. Discrete curvature criteria are adapted to each phase and the concept of invariant evaluation of curvatures is introduced to generate criteria that are constant over equivalent meshes. Image segmentation with adaptive region growing based on a polynomial surface model
A new method for segmenting intensity images into smooth surface segments is presented. The main idea is to divide the image into flat, planar, convex, concave, and saddle patches that coincide as well as possible with meaningful object features in the image. Therefore, we propose an adaptive region growing algorithm based on low-degree polynomial fitting. The algorithm uses a new adaptive thresholding technique with the L∞ fitting cost as a segmentation criterion. The polynomial degree and the fitting error are automatically adapted during the region growing process. The main contribution is that the algorithm detects outliers and edges, distinguishes between strong and smooth intensity transitions and finds surface segments that are bent in a certain way. As a result, the surface segments corresponding to meaningful object features and the contours separating the surface segments coincide with real-image object edges. Moreover, the curvature-based surface shape information facilitates many tasks in image analysis, such as object recognition performed on the polynomial representation. The polynomial representation provides good image approximation while preserving all the necessary details of the objects in the reconstructed images. A Minimalist Approach to Type-Agnostic Detection of Quadrics in Point Clouds
This paper proposes a segmentation-free, automatic and efficient procedure to
detect general geometric quadric forms in point clouds, where clutter and
occlusions are inevitable. Our everyday world is dominated by man-made objects
which are designed using 3D primitives (such as planes, cones, spheres,
cylinders, etc.). These objects are also omnipresent in industrial
environments. This gives rise to the possibility of abstracting 3D scenes
through primitives, thereby positions these geometric forms as an integral part
of perception and high level 3D scene understanding.
As opposed to state-of-the-art, where a tailored algorithm treats each
primitive type separately, we propose to encapsulate all types in a single
robust detection procedure. At the center of our approach lies a closed form 3D
quadric fit, operating in both primal & dual spaces and requiring as low as 4
oriented-points. Around this fit, we design a novel, local null-space voting
strategy to reduce the 4-point case to 3. Voting is coupled with the famous
RANSAC and makes our algorithm orders of magnitude faster than its conventional
counterparts. This is the first method capable of performing a generic
cross-type multi-object primitive detection in difficult scenes. Results on

Cube-Cut: Vertebral Body Segmentation in MRI-Data through Cubic-Shaped Divergences
In this article, we present a graph-based method using a cubic template for
volumetric segmentation of vertebrae in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
acquisitions. The user can define the degree of deviation from a regular cube
via a smoothness value Delta. The Cube-Cut algorithm generates a directed graph
with two terminal nodes (s-t-network), where the nodes of the graph correspond
to a cubic-shaped subset of the image's voxels. The weightings of the graph's
terminal edges, which connect every node with a virtual source s or a virtual
sink t, represent the affinity of a voxel to the vertebra (source) and to the
background (sink). Furthermore, a set of infinite weighted and non-terminal
edges implements the smoothness term. After graph construction, a minimal
s-t-cut is calculated within polynomial computation time, which splits the
nodes into two disjoint units. Subsequently, the segmentation result is
determined out of the source-set. A quantitative evaluation of a C++
implementation of the algorithm resulted in an average Dice Similarity

Point Cloud Structural Parts Extraction based on Segmentation Energy Minimization
In this work we consider 3D point sets, which in a typical setting represent unorganized point clouds. Segmentation of these point sets requires first to single out structural components of the unknown surface discretely approximated by the point cloud. Structural components, in turn, are surface patches approximating unknown parts of elementary geometric structures, such as planes, ellipsoids, spheres and so on. The approach used is based on level set methods computing the moving front of the surface and tracing the interfaces between different parts of it. Level set methods are widely recognized to be one of the most efficient methods to segment both 2D images and 3D medical images. Level set methods for 3D segmentation have recently received an increasing interest. We contribute by proposing a novel approach for raw point sets. Based on the motion and distance functions of the level set we introduce four energy minimization models, which are used for segmentation, by considering an equal number of distance functions specified by geometric features. Finally we evaluate the proposed algorithm on point sets simulating unorganized point clouds
Patch-type Segmentation of Voxel Shapes using Simplified Surface Skeletons
We present a new method for decomposing a 3D voxel shape into disjoint segments using the shape’s simplified surface-skeleton. The surface skeleton of a shape consists of 2D manifolds inside its volume. Each skeleton point has a maximally inscribed ball that touches the boundary in at least two contact points. A key observation is that the boundaries of the simplified fore- and background skeletons map one-to-one to increasingly fuzzy, soft convex, respectively concave, edges of the shape. Using this property, we build a method for segmentation of 3D shapes which has several desirable properties. Our method segments both noisy shapes and shapes with soft edges which vanish over low-curvature regions. Multiscale segmentations can be obtained by varying the simplification level of the skeleton. We present a voxel-based implementation of our approach and illustrate it on several realistic examples.
Lifting GIS Maps into Strong Geometric Context for Scene Understanding
Contextual information can have a substantial impact on the performance of
visual tasks such as semantic segmentation, object detection, and geometric
estimation. Data stored in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) offers a rich
source of contextual information that has been largely untapped by computer
vision. We propose to leverage such information for scene understanding by
combining GIS resources with large sets of unorganized photographs using
Structure from Motion (SfM) techniques. We present a pipeline to quickly
generate strong 3D geometric priors from 2D GIS data using SfM models aligned
with minimal user input. Given an image resectioned against this model, we
generate robust predictions of depth, surface normals, and semantic labels. We
show that the precision of the predicted geometry is substantially more
accurate other single-image depth estimation methods. We then demonstrate the
utility of these contextual constraints for re-scoring pedestrian detections,
and use these GIS contextual features alongside object detection score maps to
improve a CRF-based semantic segmentation framework, boosting accuracy over
baseline models
