VS.Net : Java's killer or Java's prey? an empirical study
Includes bibliographical references.This study intends to help businesses decide between using Sun Microsystems's Java 2 platform and Microsoft's Visual Studio .Net. It is intended to determine if Microsoft's product, Visual Studio .Net, is currently being used in businesses and ifit has proven to improve certain business functions. As such, it is expected to determine ifVS.Net has provided increased value added functionality when compared to Java. Quantifying the actual yield from the usage ofVS.Net in businesses was a goal. Utilizing an online survey made in VS.Net, data was gathered and analyzed. After analyzing the data, it was found that Java was the best with regards to scalability, integration, and compatibility, while VS.Net shortened development times and increased worker productivity. Contracting the Facebook API
In recent years, there has been an explosive growth in the popularity of
online social networks such as Facebook. In a new twist, third party developers
are now able to create their own web applications which plug into Facebook and
work with Facebook's "social" data, enabling the entire Facebook user base of
more than 400 million active users to use such applications. These client
applications can contain subtle errors that can be hard to debug if they misuse
the Facebook API. In this paper we present an experience report on applying
Microsoft's new code contract system for the .NET framework to the Facebook
API.We wrote contracts for several classes in the Facebook API wrapper which
allows Microsoft .NET developers to implement Facebook applications. We
evaluated the usefulness of these contracts during implementation of a new
Facebook application. Our experience indicates that having code contracts

An Economist's Guide to U.S. v. Microsoft
We analyze the central economic issues raised by U.S. v Microsoft. Network effects and economies of scale in applications programs created a barrier to entry for new operating system competitors, which the combination of Netscape Navigator and the Java programming language potentially could have lowered. Microsoft took actions to eliminate this threat to its operating system monopoly, and some of Microsoft's conduct very likely harmed consumers. While we recognize the risks of the government's proposed structural remedy of splitting Microsoft in two, we are pessimistic that a limited conduct remedy would be effective in this case.
Groupware and the simulation consultant
The paper recognises that good communication and interaction are key factors to the success of a simulation project and suggests that groupware technology can increase the chances of success. To underline this, the paper reviews the process of simulation to illustrate the amount of communication and interaction that must take place during a simulation project. The paper then discusses computer supported cooperative work and groupware, a research field and information technology that has successfully supported communication and interaction in other industries. To illustrate how groupware may by used by the simulation consultant, net-conferencing, exemplified by Microsoft's NetMeeting, is presented. Intel's XL Permit: A Framework for Evaluation
The paper develops a framework to evaluate permits granted to firms under the Environmental Protection Agency's Project XL ďż˝ with emphasis on the novel air permit granted to the Intel Corporation. We describe the permit, the process that created it, and the types of costs and benefits likely to arise from this type of "facility-specific" regulatory arrangement. Among other things, the paper describes the permit's impact on environmental quality, production costs, transaction costs, and Intel's strategic market position. The paper also considers how an estimate of the costs and benefits ďż˝ both to Intel and society ďż˝ might be estimated. While facility-specific regulation typically conjures images of production cost savings as processes are re-engineered and low-cost abatement strategies pursued, the Intel case highlights perhaps a more important source of benefit: flexibility in the form of streamlined permitting. Flexibility in this form allows for accelerated product introductions, with potentially significant benefits to the firm and possibly to society.
Whitepaper: The Value of Improving the Separation of Concerns
Microsoft's enterprise customers are demanding better ways to modularize their software systems. They look to the Java community, where these needs are being met with language enhancements, improved developer tools and middleware, and better runtime support.
