Reduction of Fuel Consumption and Exhaust Pollutant Using Intelligent Transport Systems

    Get PDF
Greenhouse gas emitted by the transport sector around the world is a serious issue of concern. To minimize such emission the automobile engineers have been working relentlessly. Researchers have been trying hard to switch fossil fuel to alternative fuels and attempting to various driving strategies to make traffic flow smooth and to reduce traffic congestion and emission of greenhouse gas. Automobile emits a massive amount of pollutants such as Carbon Monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), carbon dioxide (CO2), particulate matter (PM), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Intelligent transport system (ITS) technologies can be implemented to lower pollutant emissions and reduction of fuel consumption. This paper investigates the ITS techniques and technologies for the reduction of fuel consumption and minimization of the exhaust pollutant. It highlights the environmental impact of the ITS application to provide the state-of-art green solution. A case study also advocates that ITS technology reduces fuel consumption and exhaust pollutant in the urban environment

Issues Related to the Emergence of the Information Superhighway and California Societal Changes, IISTPS Report 96-4

The Norman Y. Mineta International Institute for Surface Transportation Policy Studies (IISTPS) at San José State University (SJSU) conducted this project to review the continuing development of the Internet and the Information Superhighway. Emphasis was placed on an examination of the impact on commuting and working patterns in California, and an analysis of how public transportation agencies, including Caltrans, might take advantage of the new communications technologies. The document reviews the technology underlying the current Internet “structure” and examines anticipated developments. It is important to note that much of the research for this limited-scope project was conducted during 1995, and the topic is so rapidly evolving that some information is almost automatically “dated.” The report also examines how transportation agencies are basically similar in structure and function to other business entities, and how they can continue to utilize the emerging technologies to improve internal and external communications. As part of a detailed discussion of specific transportation agency functions, it is noted that the concept of a “Roundtable Forum,” growing out of developments in Concurrent Engineering, can provide an opportunity for representatives from multiple jurisdictions to utilize the Internet for more coordinated decision-making. The report also included an extensive analysis of demographic trends in California in recent years, such as commute and recreational activities, and identifies how the emerging technologies may impact future changes

    Integrated Automotive Safety System

Most new cars today come with a host of advanced safety features including automated systems that assist the drive in maintaining control of the car and warning the driver of possible dangers. The problem, however, is that while these kinds of features greatly increase the safety of a car, they are prohibitively expensive and only available in new, high-end cars. The purpose of this MQP is to create a device that would integrate a series of safety features that could be installed in any car on the road at minimal cost to the consumer

    Privacy-Preserving Observation in Public Spaces

One method of privacy-preserving accounting or billing in cyber-physical systems, such as electronic toll collection or public transportation ticketing, is to have the user present an encrypted record of transactions and perform the accounting or billing computation securely on them. Honesty of the user is ensured by spot checking the record for some selected surveyed transactions. But how much privacy does that give the user, i.e. how many transactions need to be surveyed? It turns out that due to collusion in mass surveillance all transactions need to be observed, i.e. this method of spot checking provides no privacy at all. In this paper we present a cryptographic solution to the spot checking problem in cyber-physical systems. Users carry an authentication device that authenticates only based on fair random coins. The probability can be set high enough to allow for spot checking, but in all other cases privacy is perfectly preserved. We analyze our protocol for computational efficiency and show that it can be efficiently implemented even on plat- forms with limited computing resources, such as smart cards and smart phones

Wireless sensor network-based system for measuring and monitoring road traffic

    Get PDF
Nowadays, the measure and classification of vehicles in road traffic is accomplished by inductive loops placed under the pavement. These inductive loops allow monitoring vehicle passing by means of different configurations which provide us a number of data in order to control several parameters of the traffic (vehicle speed, traffic congestion and traffic accidents, between others). The major objective of this paper is to analysis an alternative to magnetic loops: the Wireless Sensor Networks. Firstly, a state of the art about road traffic control is described. Secondly, an alternative system based on Wireless Sensor Networks is analyzed. Network architecture for this WSN will be specified. It is not a trivial task because of the hard constraints of the small devices which compose the WSNs. In previous papers [1], we have proposed a methodology that facilitates the WSNs design for supporting real time applications such as traffic control applications. This design methodology has been used in order to obtain a WSN that reaches the real time requirements of a monitoring traffic application for intelligent roads. In the short term, the aim is to define a simulation model based on the designed WSN. To conclude, we have introduced a section about possible future directions in the smart roads field
