    Pitting corrosion evaluation: a review

    Pitting corrosion is an insidious localized form of corrosion causing much devastating destruction to structural members such as stainless steel in chloride environment. This paper gives a review of the mechanism processes of pitting, stages, factors facilitating pitting corrosion, techniques of evaluating pitting corrosion and some research work on pitting corrosion. The rudimentary knowledge of the mechanisms of pitting corrosion from this work will be of assistance to the selection process, specification and the use of stainless steels and other structural members

    This publication contains the fifty-two technical papers presented at the FAA-NASA Symposium on the Continued Airworthiness of Aircraft Structures. The symposium, hosted by the FAA Center of Excellence for Computational Modeling of Aircraft Structures at Georgia Institute of Technology, was held to disseminate information on recent developments in advanced technologies to extend the life of high-time aircraft and design longer-life aircraft. Affiliations of the participants included 33% from government agencies and laboratories, 19% from academia, and 48% from industry; in all 240 people were in attendance. Technical papers were selected for presentation at the symposium, after a review of extended abstracts received by the Organizing Committee from a general call for papers

    This serves as a source of collated information on Composite Research over the past four decades at NASA Langley Research Center, and is a key reference for readers wishing to grasp the underlying principles and challenges associated with developing and applying advanced composite materials to new aerospace vehicle concepts. Second, it identifies the major obstacles encountered in developing and applying composites on advanced flight vehicles, as well as lessons learned in overcoming these obstacles. Third, it points out current barriers and challenges to further application of composites on future vehicles. This is extremely valuable for steering research in the future, when new breakthroughs in materials or processing science may eliminate/minimize some of the barriers that have traditionally blocked the expanded application of composite to new structural or revolutionary vehicle concepts. Finally, a review of past work and identification of future challenges will hopefully inspire new research opportunities and development of revolutionary materials and structural concepts to revolutionize future flight vehicles

    A Review of Structural Health Monitoring Techniques as Applied to Composite Structures.

    Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is the process of collecting, interpreting, and analysing data from structures in order to determine its health status and the remaining life span. Composite materials have been extensively use in recent years in several industries with the aim at reducing the total weight of structures while improving their mechanical properties. However, composite materials are prone to develop damage when subjected to low to medium impacts (ie 1 – 10 m/s and 11 – 30 m/s respectively). Hence, the need to use SHM techniques to detect damage at the incipient initiation in composite materials is of high importance. Despite the availability of several SHM methods for the damage identification in composite structures, no single technique has proven suitable for all circumstances. Therefore, this paper offers some updated guidelines for the users of composites on some of the recent advances in SHM applied to composite structures; also, most of the studies reported in the literature seem to have concentrated on the flat composite plates and reinforced with synthetic fibre. There are relatively fewer stories on other structural configurations such as single or double curve structures and hybridised composites reinforced with natural and synthetic fibres as regards SHM
