Preliminary Candidate Advanced Avionics System (PCAAS)

    Get PDF
Specifications which define the system functional requirements, the subsystem and interface needs, and other requirements such as maintainability, modularity, and reliability are summarized. A design definition of all required avionics functions and a system risk analysis are presented

A study of the selection of microcomputer architectures to automate planetary spacecraft power systems

    Get PDF
Performance and reliability models of alternate microcomputer architectures as a methodology for optimizing system design were examined. A methodology for selecting an optimum microcomputer architecture for autonomous operation of planetary spacecraft power systems was developed. Various microcomputer system architectures are analyzed to determine their application to spacecraft power systems. It is suggested that no standardization formula or common set of guidelines exists which provides an optimum configuration for a given set of specifications

Electrical power subsystem requirements, power management system functional requirements, algorithms, power management subsystem, hardware development, and trade studies and analyses are discussed

Basic hardware interconnection mechanisms for building multiple microcomputer systems

    Get PDF
This report presents the current results of a research project which has been concerned with methods for designing and implementing multiple microcomputer systems. The design method is based upon identifying hardware interconnection primitives which may be used to construct the interconnection subsystem which characterizes a given multicomputer architecture. An actual experimental system has been constructed which will permit building nine of ten systems in the Anderson and Jensen architecture taxonomy. VLSI Multiple Microcomputer Technology Applied to Real-Time Simulators

    Get PDF
VLSI technology, embodied in state of the art microprocessors and microcomputers, has implied a computer system architecture that offers the possibility for extensive standardization, modularity, and performance improvements that can significantly impact and reduce the lifetime costs of real-time simulators. This report discusses one such system. Both the hardware and software aspects of the system are examined

A model of a generalized chip structure

Three distinct levels can be distinguished in the design of digital systems: architecture, implementation and realization. Description methods are available at each level assuming that at the realization level components such as nands and nors are used. The introduction of programmable components, such as microprocessors and programmable input/output chips, which now form the basis elements at the realization level, forces to reconsider these description methods

Advanced thermal energy management: A thermal test bed and heat pipe simulation

    Get PDF
Work initiated on a common-module thermal test simulation was continued, and a second project on heat pipe simulation was begun. The test bed, constructed from surplus Skylab equipment, was modeled and solved for various thermal load and flow conditions. Low thermal load caused the radiator fluid, Coolanol 25, to thicken due to its temperature avoided by using a regenerator-heat-exchanger. Other possible solutions modeled include a radiator heater and shunting heat from the central thermal bus to the radiator. Also, module air temperature can become excessive with high avionics load. A second preoject concerning advanced heat pipe concepts was initiated. A program was written which calculates fluid physical properties, liquid and vapor pressure in the evaporator and condenser, fluid flow rates, and thermal flux. The program is directed to evaluating newer heat pipe wicks and geometries, especially water in an artery surrounded by six vapor channels. Effects of temperature, groove and slot dimensions, and wick properties are reported
