Architectural techniques to extend multi-core performance scaling
Multi-cores have successfully delivered performance improvements over the past decade; however, they now face problems on two fronts: power and off-chip memory bandwidth. Dennard\u27s scaling is effectively coming to an end which has lead to a gradual increase in chip power dissipation. In addition, sustaining off-chip memory bandwidth has become harder due to the limited space for pins on the die and greater current needed to drive the increasing load . My thesis focuses on techniques to address the power and off-chip memory bandwidth challenges in order to avoid the premature end of the multi-core era. ^ In the first part of my thesis, I focus on techniques to address the power problem. One option to cope with the power limit, as suggested by some recent papers, is to ensure that an increasing number of cores are kept powered down (i.e., dark silicon) due to lack of power; but this option imposes a low upper bound on performance. The alternative option of customizing the cores to improve power efficiency may incur increased effort for hardware design, verification and test, and degraded programmability. I propose a gentler evolutionary path for multi-cores, called successive frequency unscaling ( SFU), to cope with the slowing of Dennard\u27s scaling. SFU keeps powered significantly more cores (compared to the option of keeping them \u27dark\u27) running at clock frequencies on the extended Pareto frontier that are successively lowered every generation to stay within the power budget. ^ In the second part of my thesis, I focus on techniques to avert the limited off-chip memory bandwidth problem. Die-stacking of DRAM on a processor die promises to continue scaling the pin bandwidth to off-chip memory. While the die-stacked DRAM is expected to be used as a cache, storing any part of the tag in the DRAM itself erodes the bandwidth advantage of die-stacking. As such, the on-die space overhead of the large DRAM cache\u27s tag is a concern. A well-known compromise is to employ a small on-die tag cache (T ) which avoids holes while exploiting the locality through various metadata organizational techniques. Temperature Regulation in Multicore Processors Using Adjustable-Gain Integral Controllers
This paper considers the problem of temperature regulation in multicore
processors by dynamic voltage-frequency scaling. We propose a feedback law that
is based on an integral controller with adjustable gain, designed for fast
tracking convergence in the face of model uncertainties, time-varying plants,
and tight computing-timing constraints. Moreover, unlike prior works we
consider a nonlinear, time-varying plant model that trades off precision for
simple and efficient on-line computations. Cycle-level, full system simulator
implementation and evaluation illustrates fast and accurate tracking of given
temperature reference values, and compares favorably with fixed-gain

Dynamic Processor Reconfiguration for Power, Performance and Reliability Management
Technology advancements allowed more transistors to be packed in a smaller area, while the improved performance helped in achieving higher clock frequencies. This, unfortunately led to a power density problem, forcing processor industry to lower the clock frequency and integrate multiple cores on the same die. Depending on core characteristics, the multiple cores in the die could be symmetric or asymmetric. Asymmetric multi-core processors (AMPs) have been proposed as an alternative to symmetric multi-cores to improve power efficiency. AMPs comprise of cores that implement the same ISA, but differ in performance and power characteristics due to varying sizes of micro-architectural resources. As the computational bottleneck of a workload shifts from one resource to another during its course of execution, reassigning it to another core (where it runs more efficiently), can improve the overall power efficiency. Thus achieving high power efficiency in AMPs requires (i) a diverse set of cores that are optimized for various program phases, (ii) runtime analysis to determine the best core to run on, and (iii) low overhead of re-assigning a thread to a different core type.
Decisions to swap threads between AMPs are made at coarse grain granularity of millions of instructions, to mitigate the impact of thread migration overhead. But the computational needs of the program rapidly change during the course of its execution. The best core configuration for an application such that, both power consumption and performance are optimized, changes over time rapidly at fine granularity of thousands of instructions. This dissertation explores ways to design core micro-architecture such that high power efficiency could be achieved, if switching overhead could be lowered, enabling fine grain switching.
To take advantage of power saving opportunities at fine grain granularity, this thesis explores reconfigurable/morphable architectures where core resources are reconfigured on demand to suit the needs of the executing application. At first, we explore reconfigurable architectures consisting of two kinds of cores: out-of-order (OOO) big cores and in-order (InO) small cores. The big cores provide higher performance while the small cores are more power efficient. In this proposed architecture, OOO core reconfigures into InO core at run time. Our proposed online management scheme decides to switch between these core types such that we obtain significant power benefits without impacting performance. We also observe that, resource requirements of applications can be quite diverse and consequently, resource bottlenecks or excesses can vary considerably. Thus, reconfiguration between just two core modes may not fully exploit power and performance improvement opportunities.
We therefore, explore reconfigurable architectures consisting of diverse core types that not limited to big and little cores. A single core can reconfigure into multiple core modes where each mode has unique power and performance characteristics. Workload performance on a particular core mode depends on a large set of processor resources. Some workloads are highly memory intensive, some exhibit large instruction dependency, some experience high rates of branch mis-prediction, while other workloads exhibit large exploitable instruction level parallelism. A diverse set of core modes is needed, that could address shifting resource needs during various program phases of an application. Different trade-offs in power and performance could be achieved by reducing or expanding the size of various resource. Trade-offs for each core mode are also affected by operating voltage and frequency. We therefore, propose joint core resource resizing with dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS), which is important for applications whose performance is sensitive to changes in frequency. Thus, at fine granularity, the core should adapt to varying instruction window sizes, execution bandwidth and frequency to meet the demands of the workload at run-time to improve power efficiency.
Many current processors employ DVFS aggressively to improve power efficiency and maximize performance. This dissertation studies the tradeoff in power efficiency in using fine grain DVFS and reconfigurable architectures mentioned above.We also explore another important problem due to continued scaling of devices which results in higher vulnerability to soft-errors. We consider dynamic core reconfiguration from the perspectives of both power efficiency and vulnerability to soft-errors. An online management scheme is proposed such that core reconfiguration upon a thread switch not only improves power efficiency but also does not increase the vulnerability to soft errors.
In summary, we propose in this thesis several solutions for improving power efficiency by integrating heterogeneity within the core. We also address how popular power reduction techniques like DVFS are comparable to our approach. Finally, we address reliability challenges along with improving power efficiency
Cross-Layer Approaches for an Aging-Aware Design of Nanoscale Microprocessors
Thanks to aggressive scaling of transistor dimensions, computers have revolutionized our life. However, the increasing unreliability of devices fabricated in nanoscale technologies emerged as a major threat for the future success of computers. In particular, accelerated transistor aging is of great importance, as it reduces the lifetime of digital systems. Multicore architecture optimizations for HPC applications
From single-core CPUs to detachable compute accelerators, supercomputers made a tremendous progress by using available transistors on chip and specializing hardware for a given type of computation. Today, compute nodes used in HPC employ multi-core CPUs tailored for serial execution and multiple accelerators (many-core devices or GPUs) for throughput computing. However, designing next-generation HPC system requires not only the performance improvement but also better energy efficiency. Current trend of reaching exascale level of computation asks for at least an order of magnitude increase in both of these metrics.
This thesis explores HPC-specific optimizations in order to make better utilization of the available transistors and to improve performance by transparently executing parallel code across multiple GPU accelerators. First, we analyze several HPC benchmark suites, compare them against typical desktop applications, and identify the differences which advocate for proper core tailoring. Moreover, within the HPC applications, we evaluate serial and parallel code sections separately, resulting in an Asymmetric Chip Multiprocessor (ACMP) design with one core optimized for single-thread performance and many lean cores for parallel execution. Our results presented here suggests downsizing of core front-end structures providing an HPC-tailored lean core which saves 16% of the core area and 7% of power, without performance loss.
Further improving an ACMP design, we identify that multiple lean cores run the same code during parallel regions. This motivated us to evaluate the idea where lean cores share the I-cache with the intent of benefiting from mutual prefetching, without increasing the average access latency. Our exploration of the multiple parameters finds the sweet spot on a wide interconnect to access the shared I-cache and the inclusion of a few line buffers to provide the required bandwidth and latency to sustain performance. The projections presented in this thesis show additional 11% area savings with a 5% energy reduction at no performance cost. These area and power savings might be attractive for many-core accelerators either for increasing the performance per area and power unit, or adding additional cores and thus improving the performance for the same hardware budget.
Finally, in this thesis we study the effects of future NUMA accelerators comprised of multiple GPU devices. Reaching the limits of a single-GPU die size, next-generation GPU compute accelerators will likely embrace multi-socket designs increasing the core count and memory bandwidth. However, maintaining the UMA behavior of a single-GPU in multi-GPU systems without code rewriting stands as a challenge. We investigate multi-socket NUMA GPU designs and show that significant changes are needed to both the GPU interconnect and cache architectures to achieve performance scalability. We show that application phase effects can be exploited allowing GPU sockets to dynamically optimize their individual interconnect and cache policies, minimizing the impact of NUMA effects. Our NUMA-aware GPU outperforms a single GPU by 1.5×, 2.3×, and 3.2× while achieving 89%, 84%, and 76% of theoretical application scalability in 2, 4, and 8 sockets designs respectively. Implementable today, NUMA-aware multi-socket GPUs may be a promising candidate for performance scaling of future compute nodes used in HPC.Empezando por CPUs de un solo procesador, y pasando por aceleradores discretos, los supercomputadores han avanzado enormemente utilizando todos los transistores disponibles en el chip, y especializando los diseños para cada tipo de cálculo. Actualmente, los nodos de cálculo de un sistema de Computación de Altas Prestaciones (CAP) utilizan CPUs de múltiples procesadores, optimizados para el cálculo serial de instrucciones, y múltiples aceleradores (aceleradores gráficos, o many-core), optimizados para el cálculo paralelo. El diseño de un sistema CAP de nueva generación requiere no solo mejorar el rendimiento de cálculo, sino también mejorar la eficiencia energética. La siguiente generación de sistemas requiere mejorar un orden de magnitud en ambas métricas simultáneamente. Esta tesis doctoral explora optimizaciones especÃficas para sistemas CAP para hacer un mejor uso de los transistores, y para mejorar las prestaciones de forma transparente ejecutando las aplicaciones en múltiples aceleradores en paralelo. Primero, analizamos varios conjuntos de aplicaciones CAP, y las comparamos con aplicaciones para servidores y escritorio, identificando las principales diferencias que nos indican cómo ajustar la arquitectura para CAP. En las aplicaciones CAP, también analizamos la parte secuencial del código y la parte paralela de forma separada, . El resultado de este análisis nos lleva a proponer una arquitectura multiprocesador asimétrica (ACMP) , con un procesador optimizado para el código secuencial, y múltiples procesadores, más pequeños, optimizados para el procesamiento paralelo. Nuestros resultados muestran que reducir el tamaño de las estructuras del front-end (fetch, y predicción de saltos) en los procesadores paralelos nos proporciona un 16% extra de área en el chip, y una reducción de consumo del 7%. Como mejora a nuestra arquitectura ACMP, proponemos explotar el hecho de que todos los procesadores paralelos ejecutan el mismo código al mismo tiempo. Evaluamos una propuesta en que los procesadores paralelos comparten la caché de instrucciones, con la intención de que uno de ellos precargue las instrucciones para los demás procesadores (prefetching), sin aumentar la latencia media de acceso. Sin embargo, es muy difÃcil mantener la ilusión de un tiempo de acceso a memoria uniforme en un sistema multi-GPU sin reescribir el código de la aplicación. Nuestra investigación sobre sistemas multi-GPU muestra retos significativos en el diseño de la interconexión entre las GPU y la jerarquÃa de memorias cache. Nuestros resultados muestran que se puede explotar el comportamiento en fases de las aplicaciones para optimizar la configuración de la interconexión y las cachés de forma dinámica, minimizando el impacto de la arquitectura NUMA. High-Performance Energy-Efficient and Reliable Design of Spin-Transfer Torque Magnetic Memory
In this dissertation new computing paradigms, architectures and design philosophy are proposed and evaluated for adopting the STT-MRAM technology as highly reliable, energy efficient and fast memory. For this purpose, a novel cross-layer framework from the cell-level all the way up to the system- and application-level has been developed. In these framework, the reliability issues are modeled accurately with appropriate fault models at different abstraction levels in order to analyze the overall failure rates of the entire memory and its Mean Time To Failure (MTTF) along with considering the temperature and process variation effects. Design-time, compile-time and run-time solutions have been provided to address the challenges associated with STT-MRAM. The effectiveness of the proposed solutions is demonstrated in extensive experiments that show significant improvements in comparison to state-of-the-art solutions, i.e. lower-power, higher-performance and more reliable STT-MRAM design
