Michael John Caldwell Gordon (FRS 1994), 28 February 1948 -- 22 August 2017
Michael Gordon was a pioneer in the field of interactive theorem proving and
hardware verification. In the 1970s, he had the vision of formally verifying
system designs, proving their correctness using mathematics and logic. He
demonstrated his ideas on real-world computer designs. His students extended
the work to such diverse areas as the verification of floating-point
algorithms, the verification of probabilistic algorithms and the verified
translation of source code to correct machine code. He was elected to the Royal
Society in 1994, and he continued to produce outstanding research until
retirement.
His achievements include his work at Edinburgh University helping to create
Edinburgh LCF, the first interactive theorem prover of its kind, and the ML
family of functional programming languages. He adopted higher-order logic as a
general formalism for verification, showing that it could specify hardware
designs from the gate level right up to the processor level. It turned out to
be an ideal formalism for many problems in computer science and mathematics.
His tools and techniques have exerted a huge influence across the field of
formal verification

The development and deployment of formal methods in the UK
UK researchers have made major contributions to the technical ideas
underpinning formal approaches to the specification and development of computer
systems. Perhaps as a consequence of this, some of the significant attempts to
deploy theoretical ideas into practical environments have taken place in the
UK. The authors of this paper have been involved in formal methods for many
years and both have tracked a significant proportion of the whole story. This
paper both lists key ideas and indicates where attempts were made to use the
ideas in practice. Not all of these deployment stories have been a complete
success and an attempt is made to tease out lessons that influence the

Golden Years of Australian Radio Astronomy
The evolution of Australian radio astronomy from 1945 to 1960 has been studied in detail by numerous historians of science in recent years. This Open Access book is the first to present an overview of this remarkable chapter in Australian science. The book begins in the post-war period, as the Radiophysics Laboratory in Sydney switched from secret wartime research on radar to peacetime applications of this new technology. Next follows the detection of radio waves from space and the ensuing transformation of this fledgling science into the dominant research program at the Radiophysics Lab. Drawing from this history, the book shows how by 1960 the Radiophysics Lab had become the largest and most successful radio astronomy group in the world. The final chapter presents an overview of Australian radio astronomy from 1960 to the present day, as Australia prepares to co-host the multi-national, multi-billion-dollar Square Kilometre Array. Nearly 300 high-quality images complement the text, drawn from a wide range of sources including the extensive collection held by the CSIRO Radio Astronomy Image Archive. The book will be an essential reference for readers interested in the scientific and cultural development of radio astronomy. This book is published open access under a CC BY 4.0 license
Early Australian automotive design 1895-1953
The aim of this research is to reveal new knowledge about one of the most significant Australian industries of the twentieth century, the automotive industry. In particular, it provides the first comprehensive account of the origins and early development of Australian vehicle design from the 1890s to the 1950s. Furthermore, by incorporating automotive design into the broader field of Australian design history, it paves the way for the future development of this field of research. An extensive literature review highlighted the gaps in the published accounts of the Australian automotive industry in relation to automotive design. For the early period covered by this thesis almost no research has been published on local design efforts. The general consensus is, that Australia received its ideas from overseas. Extensive archival research and re-examination of the early primary publication record however, have found this not to be true and that it is possible to trace a history of design in the period relevant to this thesis. The thesis is structured chronologically and identifies five periods where local design can be discerned using Adrian Forty’s definition of design as the conjunction of the visual with the instruction. Early inventers, tinkers and builders up to WWI (1895-1916) provided the grounding in automobile design using both borrowed technologies and new concepts that proved to be significant. Opportunities that arose from an embargo on imported bodies (1917-1922) led new industries to mass-produce a standardized motor body and several post-war cars, a few using new ideas and construction methods. The development of the first design centres (1923-1929) and formal links with overseas motor companies witnessed a transfer of technology that resulted in local design equalling international design. The financial collapse of the depression saw American companies consolidate their Australian positions (1930-1939), leading to new management, variations and unique body styles. Opportunities afforded by WWII to design and produce an Australian mass produced car, principally the Holden (1939-1953), reveals unrecognised expertise Australian designers had developed previously in the Holden’s body design. The outcome of this research is the first scholarly account of early Australian automotive design during its formative years. The research provides a chronological narrative of this design development and uncovers the names of many unknown or neglected Australian designers. At the same time, it has identified a number of previously unrecorded Australian automobiles. The thesis also explores the contribution of individual component designers, many of whom produced internationally successful automobile engines, transmission systems and suspension parts. Appendix I identifies and lists all the cars that are true Australian efforts, clarifying and expanding previous incomplete lists and providing a documented basis for future research. Jones, Barry Owen (1932– ). Australian politician, writer and lawyer, born in Geelong. Educated at Melbourne University, he was a public servant, high school teacher, television and radio performer, university lecturer and lawyer before serving as a Labor MP in the Victorian Parliament 1972–77 and the Australian House of Representatives 1977–98. He took a leading role in reviving the Australian film industry, abolishing the death penalty in Australia, and was the first politician to raise public awareness of global warming, the ‘post-industrial’ society, the IT revolution, biotechnology, the rise of ‘the Third Age’ and the need to preserve Antarctica as a wilderness. In the Hawke Government, he was Minister for Science 1983–90, Prices and Consumer Affairs 1987, Small Business 1987–90 and Customs 1988–90. He became a member of the Executive Board of UNESCO, Paris 1991–95 and National President of the Australian Labor Party 1992–2000, 2005–06. He was Deputy Chairman of the Constitutional Convention 1998. His books include Decades of Decision 1860– (1965), Joseph II (1968), Age of Apocalypse (1975), and he edited The Penalty is Death (1968). Sleepers, Wake!: Technology and the Future of Work was published by Oxford University Press in 1982, became a bestseller and has been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Swedish and braille. The fourth edition was published in 1995. Knowledge Courage Leadership, a collection of speeches and essays, appeared in 2016. He received a DSc for his services to science in 1988 and a DLitt in 1993 for his work on information theory. Elected FTSE (1992), FAHA (1993), FAA (1996) and FASSA (2003), he is the only person to have become a Fellow of four of Australia’s five learned Academies. Awarded an AO in 1993, named as one of Australia’s 100 ‘living national treasures’ in 1998, he was elected a Visiting Fellow Commoner of Trinity College, Cambridge in 1999. His autobiography, A Thinking Reed, was published in 2006 and The Shock of Recognition, about music and literature, in 2016.
