    Assessment and Real Time Implementation of Wireless Communications Systems and Applications in Transportation Systems

Este tipo de modulacións proporcionan unha alta eficiencia espectral á vez que permiten corrixir de forma sinxela os efectos da canle radio. Estes sistemas utilizan OFDMA como mecanismo para a repartición dos recursos radio dispoñibles entre os diferentes usuarios. Este repartimento realízase asignando un subconxunto de subportadoras a cada usuario nun instante de tempo determinado. Isto aporta unha gran flexibilidade ó sistema que lle permite adaptarse tanto ós requisitos de calidade de servizo dos usuarios como ó estado da canle radio. A capa de acceso ó medio (MAC) destes sistemas encárgase de configurar os diversos parámetros proporcionados pola capa física OFDMA, ademais de xestionar os diversos fluxos de información de cada usuario, transformando os paquetes de capas superiores en paquetes da capa física. Neste traballo estúdase o deseño e implementación das capas MAC e PHY de sistemas de comunicación 4G ademais da súa aplicabilidade en sistemas de transporte ferroviarios. Por unha parte, abórdase o deseño e implementación en tempo real do estándar WiMAX. Estúdanse os mecanismos necesarios para establecer comunicacións bidireccionais entre unha estación base e múltiples dispositivos móbiles. Ademais, estúdase como realizar esta implementación nunha arquitectura hardware baseada en DSPs e FPGAs, na que se implementan as capas MAC e PHY. Dado que esta arquitectura ten uns recursos computacionais limitados, tamén se estudan as necesidades de cada módulo do sistema para poder garantir o funcionamento en tempo real do sistema completo. Por outra parte, tamén se estuda a aplicabilidade dos sistemas 4G a sistemas de transporte públicos. Os sistemas de comunicacións e sinalización son unha parte vital para os sistemas de transporte ferroviario e metro. As comunicacións sen fíos utilizadas por estes sistemas deben ser robustas e proporcionar unha alta fiabilidade para permitir a supervisión, control e seguridade do tráfico ferroviario. Para levar a cabo esta avaliación de viabilidade realízanse simulacións de redes de comunicacións LTE en contornos de transporte ferroviarios, comprobando o cumprimento dos requisitos de fiabilidade e seguridade. Realízanse diferentes simulacións do sistema de comunicacións para poder ser avaliadas e seleccionar a configuración e arquitectura do sistema máis axeitada en función do escenario considerado. Tamén se efectúan simulacións de redes baseadas en Wi-Fi, dado que é a solución máis utilizada nos metros, para confrontar os resultados cos obtidos para LTE. Para que os resultados das simulacións sexan realistas débense empregar modelos de propagación radio axeitados. Nas simulacións utilízanse tanto modelos deterministas como modelos baseados nos resultados de campañas de medida realizadas nestes escenarios. Nas simulacións empréganse os diferentes fluxos de información destes escenarios para comprobar que se cumpren os requisitos de calidade de servicio (QoS). Por exemplo, os fluxos críticos para o control ferroviario, como European Train Control System (ETCS) ou Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC), necesitan unha alta fiabilidade e un retardo mínimo nas comunicacións para garantir o correcto funcionamento do sistema.[Resumen] Los sistemas de comunicación inalámbricos de cuarta y quinta generación (4G y 5G) utilizan una capa física (PHY) basada en modulaciones multiportadora para la transmisión de datos con un gran ancho de banda. Este tipo de modulaciones han demostrado tener una alta eficiencia espectral a la vez que permiten corregir de forma sencilla los efectos del canal radio. Estos sistemas utilizan OFDMA como mecanismo para el reparto de los recursos radio disponibles entre los diferentes usuarios. Este reparto se realiza asignando un subconjunto de subportadoras a cada usuario en un instante de tiempo determinado. Esto aporta una gran flexibilidad al sistema que le permite adaptarse tanto a los requisitos de calidad de servicio de los usuarios como al estado del canal radio. La capa de acceso al medio (MAC) de estos sistemas se encarga de configurar los diversos parámetros proporcionados por la capa física OFDMA, además de gestionar los diversos flujos de información de cada usuario, transformando los paquetes de capas superiores en paquetes de la capa física. En este trabajo se estudia el diseño e implementación de las capas MAC y PHY de sistemas de comunicación 4G además de su aplicabilidad en sistemas de transporte ferroviarios. Por una parte, se aborda el diseño e implementación en tiempo real del estándar WiMAX. Se estudian los mecanismos necesarios para establecer comunicaciones bidireccionales entre una estación base y múltiples dispositivos móviles. Además, se estudia cómo realizar esta implementación en una arquitectura hardware basada en DSPs y FPGAs, en la que se implementan las capas MAC y PHY. Dado que esta arquitectura tiene unos recursos computacionales limitados, también se estudian las necesidades de cada módulo del sistema para poder garantizar el funcionamiento en tiempo real del sistema completo. Por otra parte, también se estudia la aplicabilidad de los sistemas 4G a sistemas de transporte públicos. Los sistemas de comunicaciones y señalización son una parte vital para los sistemas de transporte ferroviario y metro. Las comunicaciones inalámbricas utilizadas por estos sistemas deben ser robustas y proporcionar una alta fiabilidad para permitir la supervisión, control y seguridad del tráfico ferroviario. Para llevar a cabo esta evaluación de viabilidad se realizan simulaciones de redes de comunicaciones LTE en entornos de transporte ferroviarios, comprobando si se cumplen los requisitos de fiabilidad y seguridad. Se realizan diferentes simulaciones del sistema de comunicaciones para poder ser evaluados y seleccionar la configuración y arquitectura del sistema más adecuada en función del escenario planteado. También se efectúan simulaciones de redes basadas en Wi-Fi, dado que es la solución más utilizada en los metros, para comparar los resultados con los obtenidos para LTE. Para que los resultados de las simulaciones sean realistas se deben utilizar modelos de propagación radio apropiados. En las simulaciones se utilizan tanto modelos deterministas como modelos basados en los resultados de campañas de medida realizadas en estos escenarios. En las simulaciones se utilizan los diferentes flujos de información de estos escenarios para comprobar que se cumplen sus requisitos de calidad de servicio. Por ejemplo, los flujos críticos para el control ferroviario, como European Train Control System (ETCS) o Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC), necesitan una alta fiabilidad y un retardo bajo en las comunicaciones para garantizar el correcto funcionamiento del sistema.[Abstract] The fourth and fifth generation wireless communication systems (4G and 5G) use a physical layer (PHY) based on multicarrier modulations for data transmission using high bandwidth. This type of modulations has shown to provide high spectral efficiency while allowing low complexity radio channel equalization. These systems use OFDMA as a mechanism for distributing the available radio resources among different users. This allocation is done by assigning a subset of subcarriers to each user in a given instant of time. This provides great flexibility to the system that allows it to adapt to both the quality of service requirements of users and the radio channel state. The media access layer (MAC) of these systems is in charge of configuring the multiple OFDMA PHY layer parameters, in addition to managing the data flows of each user, transforming the higher layer packets into PHY layer packets. This work studies the design and implementation of MAC and PHY layers of 4G communication systems as well as their applicability in rail transport systems. On the one hand, the design and implementation in real time of the WiMAX standard is addressed. The required mechanisms to establish bidirectional communications between a base station and several mobile devices are also evaluated. Moreover, a MAC layer and PHY layer implementation is presented, using a hardware architecture based in DSPs and FPGAs. Since this architecture has limited computational resources, the requirements of each processing block of the system are also studied in order to guarantee the real time operation of the complete system. On the other hand, the applicability of 4G systems to public transportation systems is also studied. Communications and signaling systems are a vital part of rail and metro transport systems. The wireless communications used by these systems must be robust and provide high reliability to enable the supervision, control and safety of rail traffic. To carry out this feasibility assessment, LTE communications network simulations are performed in rail transport environments to verify that reliability and safety requirements are met. Several simulations are carried out in order to evaluate the system performance and select the most appropriate system configuration in each case. Simulations of Wi-Fi based networks are also carried out, since it is the most used solution in subways, to compare the results with those obtained for LTE. To perform the simulations correctly, appropriate radio propagation models must be used. Both deterministic models and models based on the results of measurement campaigns in these scenarios are used in the simulations. The simulations use the different information flows present in the railway transportation systems to verify that its quality of service requirements are met. For example, critical flows for railway control, such as the European Train Control System (ETCS) or Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC), require high reliability and low delay communications to ensure the proper functioning of the system

    3GPP LTE Release 9 and 10 requirement analysis to physical layer UE testing

    The purpose of this thesis was to analyze the testing requirements to physical layer features which are used in LTE Release 9 and 10 timeframe. The aim of the analysis was to define test case requirements for new features from the physical layer point of view. This analysis can then be utilized to implement and design test cases using commercial eNB simulators. The analysis was carried out by studying the 3GPP specifications and by investigating the integration and system level testing requirements. Different feature specific parameters were evaluated and different testing aspects were studied in order to verify the functionalities and performance of the UE. Also, different conformance test case scenarios and field testing aspects were investigated in order to improve the test case planning in the integration and system testing phase. The analysis showed that in Rel-9 there are two main features which have a great impact on the Rel-9 physical layer testing. These two features are the dual-layer beamforming and UE positioning which is done with OTDOA and E-CID methods. It was analyzed that the requirements for the downlink dual-layer beamforming focus on TDD side and the test plan must contain especially throughput performance testing in integration and system phase testing. OTDOA and E-CID methods, on the other hand, need test plans which are concentrating on the positioning accuracy. In Rel-10, the analysis showed that there are plenty of new features on physical layer to ensure the transition from LTE to LTE-Advanced. The main requirements were assigned for the CA feature which has testing activities especially on the UE feedback operations. Also, different kinds of CA deployment scenarios were analyzed to evaluate more closely the initial CA testing scenarios in integration and system testing. Analysis continued with downlink multi-layer beamforming where the requirements were seen to concentrate on new CSI-RS aspects and to throughput performance testing. Uplink MIMO aspects were analyzed at the end and the studies showed that this feature may have a minor role in Rel-10 timeframe and therefore it does not have any important testing requirements which should be taken into account in test plans

    Técnicas de gestão de feixe de onda para sistemas Massive MIMO nas redes 5G NR

    The use of Millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum frequencies is seen as a key enabler technology for the future wireless communication systems to overcome the bandwidth shortage of the sub 6GHz microwave spectrum band, enabling high speed data transmissions in the 5G/6G systems. Nevertheless, mmWave propagation characteristics are associated to significant free-path losses and many more attenuations that become even more harsher as the frequency increases, rendering the communication challenging at this frequencies. To overcome these distinct disadvantages, multiple antenna arrays are employed to allow beamforming techniques for the transmission of narrower concentrated beams in more precise directions and less interference levels between them, consequently improving the link budget. Thus, to constantly assure that the communication with each device is done using the beam pair that allows the best possible connectivity, a set of Beam Management control procedures is necessary to assure an efficient beamformed connection establishment and its continuous maintenance between the device and the network. This dissertation will address the description of the Initial Beam Establishment (IBE) BM procedure, focusing the selection of the most suitable transmit-receive beam pair available after completed beam sweeping techniques to measure the different power levels of the received signal. The main goal is to design a new 3GPP-standard compliant beam pair selection algorithm based on SSS angle estimation (BSAE), that makes use of multiple Synchronization Signal Blocks (SSBs) to maximize the Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP) value at the receiver, through the selected beam pair. This optimization is done using the Secondary Synchronization Signals (SSSs) present in each SSB to perform channel estimation in the digital domain (comprising the effects of the analog processing). Afterwards, the combination of those estimations were used to perform the equivalent channel propagation matrix estimation without the analog processing effects. Finally, through the channel propagation matrix, the angle that maximizes the RSRP was determined to compute the most suitable beam through the aggregated response vector. The obtained results show that the proposed algorithm achieves better performance levels compared to a conventional beam pair selection algorithm. Furthermore, a comparison with an optimal case is also done, i.e., the situation where the channel is known, and the optimal beam pair angle can be determined. Therefore, the similar performance results compared to the optimal case indicates that the proposed algorithm is interesting for practical 5G mmWave mMIMO implementations, according to 3GPP-compliant standards.O uso de frequências na banda das ondas milimétricas é visto como uma tecnologia chave para os futuros sistemas de comunicação móveis, tendo em vista a ultrapassar o problema da escassez de banda a sub-6 GHz, e por permitir as elevadas taxas de dados requeridas para sistemas 5G/6G. Contudo, a propagação deste tipo de ondas está associado a perdas acentuadas em espaço livre e várias atenuações que se tornam cada vez mais significativas com o aumento do valor da frequência, impondo obstáculos à comunicação. Para ultrapassar estas adversidades, agregados constituídos por múltiplos elementos de antena são implementados por forma a permitir técnicas de formação de feixe e possibilitar a transmissão de feixes mais estreitos e altamente direcionais, diminuindo os níveis de interferência e melhorando consequentemente o link budget. Deste modo, para assegurar constantemente que a comunicação efetuada em cada dispositivo ocorre utilizando o conjunto de feixes que proporciona o melhor nível de conectividade, é então necessário um conjunto de procedimentos de controlo de gestão de feixe, assegurando um estabelecimento eficiente da comunicação e a sua contínua manutenção entre um dispositivo e a rede. Esta dissertação descreve o procedimento de gestão de feixe conhecido como estabelecimento inicial de feixe, focando o processo de seleção do melhor par de feixe de transmissão-receção disponível após o uso de técnicas de varrimento de feixe por fim a efetuar medições dos diferentes níveis de potência do sinal recebido. O principal objetivo passa pela conceção de um novo algoritmo de estabelecimento de par de feixes baseado em estimações de ângulo (BSAE), que explora o uso de múltiplos SSBs definidos pelo 3GPP, por forma a maximizar o RSRP no recetor, através do feixe selecionado. Esta otimização é feita usando os sinais de sincronização secundários (SSSs) presentes em cada SSB para efetuar uma estimação de canal no domínio digital (que contém o efeito do processamento analógico). Depois, combinando essas estimações, foi feita uma estimação da matriz do canal de propagação, sem o efeito desse processamento analógico. Finalmente, através da matriz do canal de propagação, foi determinado o ângulo que maximiza o RSRP, e calculado o feixe através do vetor de resposta do agregado. Os resultados obtidos demonstram que o algoritmo proposto atinge melhor desempenho quando comparado com o algoritmo convencional de seleção de par de feixes. Foi feita ainda uma comparação com o caso ótimo, isto é, com o caso em que se conhece completamente o canal e se obtém um ângulo ótimo. Os resultados obtidos pelo algoritmo proposto foram muito próximos do caso ótimo, pelo que é bastante interessante para sistemas práticos 5G mmWave mMIMO, que estejam de acordo com o padrão 3GPP.Mestrado em Engenharia Eletrónica e Telecomunicaçõe

    Multitone NB-IoT optimization based on filtered OFDM waveform

    Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is standardized by 3GPP as a novel radio-access scheme for next-generation IoT technology. In-band operation mode, as one of its deployment methods, shares the spectrum of LTE. To avoid interference leakage on adjacent resource blocks (RBs), the spectrum sharing system needs a spectrally well-localized waveform. In this thesis, we investigate filtered-OFDM waveform for NB-IoT in-band system. This is achieved by designing and exploiting optimized filter for each sub-band. Specifically, the optimum filter needs a suitable length, a relatively narrowed transition band, and adequate stopband attenuation, which efficiently reduces the required guard-band, minimizing the related overhead in resource usage. In the experiments, we simplify the system model by shifting the NB-IoT RB to the center of the LTE spectrum. Firstly, we test potential filter types with various transition bands, selecting suitable filter configurations with acceptable performance when the system operates under carrier frequency offset (CFO) of half subcarrier spacing. Then, we define two different power level test cases, which are based on the minimum SNR for 1% uncoded bit-error rate (BER), for examining NB-IoT and LTE error tolerance in asynchronous cases, when NB-IoT system fails to synchronize to the time-frequency alignment of LTE. Finally, the system performance in a multipath channel is evaluated. With filtered-OFDM, the out-of-band emission is suppressed effectively and the tolerance to time and frequency offset is significantly improved, which makes the proposed scheme suitable for supporting asynchronous NB-IoT operation

    Real-Time Localization Using Software Defined Radio

    Service providers make use of cost-effective wireless solutions to identify, localize, and possibly track users using their carried MDs to support added services, such as geo-advertisement, security, and management. Indoor and outdoor hotspot areas play a significant role for such services. However, GPS does not work in many of these areas. To solve this problem, service providers leverage available indoor radio technologies, such as WiFi, GSM, and LTE, to identify and localize users. We focus our research on passive services provided by third parties, which are responsible for (i) data acquisition and (ii) processing, and network-based services, where (i) and (ii) are done inside the serving network. For better understanding of parameters that affect indoor localization, we investigate several factors that affect indoor signal propagation for both Bluetooth and WiFi technologies. For GSM-based passive services, we developed first a data acquisition module: a GSM receiver that can overhear GSM uplink messages transmitted by MDs while being invisible. A set of optimizations were made for the receiver components to support wideband capturing of the GSM spectrum while operating in real-time. Processing the wide-spectrum of the GSM is possible using a proposed distributed processing approach over an IP network. Then, to overcome the lack of information about tracked devices’ radio settings, we developed two novel localization algorithms that rely on proximity-based solutions to estimate in real environments devices’ locations. Given the challenging indoor environment on radio signals, such as NLOS reception and multipath propagation, we developed an original algorithm to detect and remove contaminated radio signals before being fed to the localization algorithm. To improve the localization algorithm, we extended our work with a hybrid based approach that uses both WiFi and GSM interfaces to localize users. For network-based services, we used a software implementation of a LTE base station to develop our algorithms, which characterize the indoor environment before applying the localization algorithm. Experiments were conducted without any special hardware, any prior knowledge of the indoor layout or any offline calibration of the system

    Fifth generation cellular networks aim to provide new types of services. Prominent amongst these are industrial automation and vehicle-to-vehicle communications. Such new use cases demand lower latencies and higher reliability along with greater flexibility than current and past generations of cellular technologies allow. Enabling these new service types requires the introduction of device-to-device communications (D2D). This work investigated network-controlled D2D schemes wherein cellular base stations retain control over spectrum usage. D2D nodes assemble into clusters. Each D2D cluster then organises itself as it sees fit within the constraints imposed by the cellular network. A review of proposed D2D control schemes was conducted to identify pertinent interference issues. Measurements were then devised to empirically collect quantitative data on the impact of this interference. Measurements were conducted using a software-defined radio (SDR) platform. An SDR based system was selected to enable a low cost and highly flexible iterative approach to development while still providing the accuracy of real-world measurement. D2D functionality was added to the chosen SDR system with the essential parts of Long Term Evolution Release 8 implemented. Two series of measurements were performed. The first aimed to determine the adjacent channel interference impact of a cellular user being located near a D2D receiver. The second measurement series collected data on the co-channel interference of spectrum re-use between a D2D link and a moving cellular transmitter. Based on these measurements it was determined that D2D communications within a cellular system is feasible. Furthermore, the required frequency of channel state information reporting as a function of node velocity was determined.Viidennen sukupolven solukkoverkoilla pyritään mahdollistamaan uudentyyppisiä palveluja kuten teollisuusautomatiikkaa ja ajoneuvojen välistä viestintää. Tämänkaltaiset uudet käyttötarkoitukset vaativat lyhyempien viiveiden ja korkeammat luotettavuuden ohella myös suurempaa joustavuutta kuin minkä nykyisen sukupolven matkapuhelinverkkoteknologiat sallivat. Edellä mainittujen uusien palvelujen toteuttaminen vaatii suoria laitteiden välisiä yhteyksiä (engl. D2D). Tässä diplomityössä keskityttiin tutkimaan verkkohallinteisia D2D-rakenteita, joissa solukkoverkko hallinnoi spektrin käyttöä. D2D-päätteet liittyvät yhteen muodostaakseen klustereita, jotka hallinnoivat sisäistä tietoliikennettään parhaaksi katsomallaan tavalla solukkoverkon asettamien rajoitusten puitteissa. Kirjallisuuskatsauksen avulla selvitettiin aiemmissa tutkimuksissa esitetyille D2D-ratkaisuille yhteiset interferenssiongelmat. Näiden vaikutusta ja suuruutta tutkittiin mittausten avulla. Mittaukset toteutettiin ohjelmistoradioalustan (engl. SDR) avulla. SDR-pohjaisen järjestelmän käyttö mahdollisti edullisen ja joustavan tavan kerätä empiirisiä mittaustuloksia. D2D-toiminnallisuus lisättiin Long Term Evolution Release 8:n olennaiset ominaisuudet omaavaan alustaan. Tällä alustalla toteutettiin kaksi mittaussarjaa. Ensimmäisellä kerättiin tuloksia viereisellä kanavalla toimivan matkapuhelimen D2D-vastaanottimelle aiheuttamasta interferenssistä näiden ollessa toistensa läheisyydessä. Toisella mittaussarjalla selvitettiin samalla kanavalla toimivan D2D-yhteyden ja liikkuvan matkapuhelimen välistä interferenssiä.     Control Channel Interference Measurement in LTE-TDD Heterogeneous Network

    Deploying low power eNodeBs inside macro-cells is an effective way to enhance indoor coverage. By reusing frequency between macro-cells and indoor femto-cells, the efficiency of expensive licensed spectrum can be further increased. This thesis measured Physical Downlink Control Channel (PDCCH) performance in such a heterogeneous LTE-TDD network. Four USRP software radio terminals and connected Linux workstations were deployed to build a test environment. They acted as eNodeB and UE respectively. During the test, the femto-cell was configured to coordinate its radio frame with the macro-cell. Several criteria including received block error rate, payload bit error rate and symbols signal to interference and noise ratio were used to evaluate the PDCCH performance in macro-cell under heterogeneous environment

    Channel Estimation in Uplink of Long Term Evolution

    Long Term Evolution is considered to be the fastest spreading communication standard in the world.To live up to the increasing demands of higher data rates day by day and higher multimedia services,the existing UMTS system was further upgraded to LTE.To meet their requirements novel technologies are employed in the downlink as well as uplink like Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) and Single Carrier- Frequency Division Multiple Access (SC-FDMA).For the receiver to perform properly it should be able to recover athe transmittedadata accurately and this is done through channel estimation.Channel Estimation in LTE engages Coherent Detection where a prior knowledge of the channel is required,often known as Channel State Information (CSI).This thesis aims at studying the channel estimation methods used in LTE and evaluate their performance in various multipath models specified by ITU like Pedestrian and Vehicular.The most commonly used channel estimation algorithms are Least Squarea(LS) and Minimum MeanaSquare error (MMSE) algorithms.The performance of these estimators are evaluated in both uplink as well as Downlink in terms of the Bit Error Rate (BER).It was evaluated for OFDMA and then for SC-FDMA,further the performance was assessed in SC-FDMA at first without subcarrier Mapping and after that with subcarrier mapping schemes like Interleaved SC-FDMA (IFDMA) and Localized SC-FDMA (lFDMA).It was found from the results that the MMSE estimator performs better than the LS estimator in both the environments.And the IFDMA has a lower PAPR than LFDMA but LFDMA has a better BER performance
