    Exact and suboptimal reactive strategies for resource-constrained project scheduling with uncertain resource availabilities.

    In order to cope with the uncertainty inherent in practical project management, proactive and/or reactive strategies can be used. Proactive strategies try to anticipate future disruptions by incorporating slack time or excess resource availability into the schedule, whereas reactive strategies react after a disruption happened and try to revert to a feasible schedule. Traditionally, reactive approaches have focused on obtaining a good schedule with respect to the original objective function or a schedule that deviates as little as possible from the baseline schedule. In this paper, we present various approaches, exact as well as heuristic, for optimizing the latter objective and thus encouraging schedule stability. Furthermore, in contrast to traditional rescheduling algorithms, we present a new heuristic that also takes future uncertainty into account when repairing the schedule. We consider a variant of the resource- constrained project scheduling problem in which the uncertainty is modeled by means of unexpected resource breakdowns.     Optimization Approaches To Protect Transportation Infrastructure Against Strategic and Random Disruptions

    Past and recent events have proved that critical infrastructure are vulnerable to natural catastrophes, unintentional accidents and terrorist attacks. Protecting these systems is critical to avoid loss of life and to guard against economical upheaval. A systematic approach to plan security investments is paramount to guarantee that limited protection resources are utilized in the most effcient manner. This thesis provides a detailed review of the optimization models that have been introduced in the past to identify vulnerabilities and protection plans for critical infrastructure. The main objective of this thesis is to study new and more realistic models to protect transportation infrastructure such as railway and road systems against man made and natural disruptions. Solution algorithms are devised to effciently solve the complex formulations proposed. Finally, several illustrative case studies are analysed to demonstrate how solving these models can be used to support effcient protection decisions

    Identification of critical combination of vulnerable links in transportation networks ā€“ a global optimisation approach

    This paper presents a global optimisation framework for identifying the most critical combination of vulnerable links in a transportation network. The problem is formulated as a mixed-integer non-linear programme with equilibrium constraints, aiming to determine the combination of links whose deterioration would induce the most increase in total travel cost in the network. A global optimisation solution method applying a piecewise linearisation approach and range-reduction technique is developed to solve the model. From the numerical results, it is interesting and counterintuitive to note that the set of most vulnerable links when simultaneous multiple-link failure occurs is not simply the combination of the most vulnerable links with single-link failure, and the links in the critical combination of vulnerable links are not necessarily connected or even in the neighbourhood of each other. The numerical results also show that the ranking of vulnerable links will be significantly affected by certain input parameters

    During the last decade, considerable research efforts in the project scheduling literature have concentrated on resource-constrained project scheduling under uncertainty. Most of this research focuses on protecting the project due date against disruptions during execution. Few efforts have been made to protect the starting times of intermediate activities. In this paper, we develop a heuristic algorithm for minimizing a stability cost function (weighted sum of deviations between planned and realized activity starting times). The algorithm basically proposes a clever way to scatter time buffers throughout the baseline schedule. We provide an extensive simulation experiment to investigate the trade-off between quality robustness (measured in terms of project duration) and solution robustness (stability). We address the issue whether to concentrate safety time in so-called project and feeding buffers in order to protect the planned project completion time or to scatter safety time throughout the baseline schedule in order to enhance stability.Project management; Scheduling/sequencing; Simulation methods;
