    Plug and Play DC-DC Converters for Smart DC Nanogrids with Advanced Control Ancillary Services

    This paper gives a general view of the control possibilities for dc-dc converters in dc nanogrids. A widely adopted control method is the droop control, which is able to achieve proportional load sharing among multiple sources and to stabilize the voltage of the dc distribution bus. Based on the droop control, several advanced control functions can be implemented. For example, power-based droop controllers allow dc-dc converters to operate with power flow control or droop control, whether the hosting nanogrid is operating connected to a strong upstream grid or it is operating autonomously (i.e., islanded). Converters can also be equipped with various supporting functions. Functions that are expected to play a crucial role in nanogrids that fully embrace the plug-and-play paradigm are those aiming at the monitoring and tuning of the key performance indices of the control loops. On-line stability monitoring tools respond to this need, by continuously providing estimates of the stability margins of the loops of interest; self- tuning can be eventually achieved on the basis of the obtained estimates. These control solutions can significantly enhance the operation and the plug-and-play feature of dc nanogrids, even with a variable number of hosted converters. Experimental results are reported to show the performance of the control approaches

    Analysis of an On-Line Stability Monitoring Approach for DC Microgrid Power Converters

    An online approach to evaluate and monitor the stability margins of dc microgrid power converters is presented in this paper. The discussed online stability monitoring technique is based on the Middlebrook's loop-gain measurement technique, adapted to the digitally controlled power converters. In this approach, a perturbation is injected into a specific digital control loop of the converter and after measuring the loop gain, its crossover frequency and phase margin are continuously evaluated and monitored. The complete analytical derivation of the model, as well as detailed design aspects, are reported. In addition, the presence of multiple power converters connected to the same dc bus, all having the stability monitoring unit, is also investigated. An experimental microgrid prototype is implemented and considered to validate the theoretical analysis and simulation results, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the digital implementation of the technique for different control loops. The obtained results confirm the expected performance of the stability monitoring tool in steady-state and transient operating conditions. The proposed method can be extended to generic control loops in power converters operating in dc microgrids

    Design of a High-Performance High-Pass Generalized Integrator Based Single-Phase PLL

    Grid-interactive power converters are normally synchronized to the grid using phase-locked loops (PLLs). The performance of the PLLs is affected by the non-ideal conditions in the sensed grid voltage such as harmonics, frequency deviations and dc offsets in single-phase systems. In this paper, a single-phase PLL is presented to mitigate the effects of these non-idealities. This PLL is based on the popular second order generalized integrator (SOGI) structure. The SOGI structure is modified to eliminate of the effects of input dc offsets. The resulting SOGI structure has a high-pass filtering property. Hence, this PLL is termed as high-pass generalized integrator based PLL (HGI-PLL). It has fixed parameters which reduces the implementation complexity and aids in the implementation in low-end digital controllers. The HGI-PLL is shown to have least resource utilization among the SOGI based PLLs with dc cancelling capability. Systematic design methods are evolved leading to the design that limits the unit vector THD to within 1% for given non-ideal input conditions in terms of frequency deviation and harmonic distortion. The proposed designs achieve the fastest transient response. The performance of this PLL has been verified experimentally. The theoretical basis for the technique is discussed and results from high level simulations for a 16 bit, 4th order, audio ADC are presented. The analysis demonstrates the potential to reduce the computational effort associated with test response analysis versus conventional techniques

This paper presents a hysteresis band controller capable of setting a constant value for the steady-state switching frequency of a sliding mode controller in regulation and tracking tasks. The proposed architecture relies on a piecewise linear modeling of the switching function behavior within the hysteresis band, and consists of a discrete-time integral-type controller that modifies the amplitude of the hysteresis band of the comparator in accordance with the error between the desired and the actually measured switching period. For tracking purposes, an additional feedforward action is introduced to compensate the time variation of the switching function derivatives at either sides of the switching hyperplane in the steady state. Stability proofs are provided, and a design criterion for the control parameters to guarantee closed-loop stability is subsequently derived.     The increasing demand for electricity and the global concern about environment has led energy planners and developers to explore and develop clean energy sources. Under such circumstances, renewable energy sources (RES) have emerged as an alternative source of energy generation. Immense development has been made in renewable energy fields and methods to harvest it. To replace conventional generation system, these renewable energy sources must be sustainable, reliable, stable, and efficient. But these sources have their own distinguished characteristics. Due to sporadic nature of renewable energy sources, the uninterrupted power availability cannot be guaranteed. Handling and integration of such diversified power sources is not a trivial process. It requires high degree of efficiency in power extraction, transformation, and utilization. These objectives can only be achieved with the use of highly efficient, reliable, secure and cost-effective power electronics interface. Power electronics devices have made tremendous developments in the recent past. Numerous single and multi-port converter topologies have been developed for processing and delivering the renewable energy. Various multiport converter topologies have been presented to integrate RES, however some limitations have been identified in these topologies in terms of efficiency, reliability, component count and size. Therefore, further research is required to develop a multiport interface and to address the highlighted issues. In this work, a multi-port power electronics circuitry for integration of multiple renewable energy sources is developed. The proposed circuitry assimilates different renewable sources to power up the load with different voltage levels while maintaining high power transfer efficiency and reliability with a simple and reliable control scheme. This research work presents a new multiport non-isolated DC-DC buck converter. The new topology accommodates two different energy sources at the input to power up a variable load. The power sources can be employed independently and concurrently. The converter also has a bidirectional port which houses a storage device like battery to store the surplus energy under light load conditions and can serve as an input source in case of absence of energy sources. The new presented circuitry is analytically examined to validate its effectiveness for multiport interface. System parameters are defined and the design of different components used, is presented. After successful mathematical interpretation, a simulation platform is developed in MATLAB/Simscape to conduct simulations studies to verify analytical results and to carry out stability analysis. In the final stage, a low power, low voltage prototype model is developed to authenticate the results obtained in simulation studies. The converter is tested under different operating modes and variable source and load conditions. The simulation and experimental results are compiled in terms of converter’s efficiency, reliability, stability. The results are presented to prove the presented topology as a highly reliable, stable and efficient multiport interface, with small size and minimum number of components, for integration of renewable energy sources

    Electrical performance characteristics of high power converters for space power applications

    The first goal of this project was to investigate various converters that would be suitable for processing electric power derived from a nuclear reactor. The implementation is indicated of a 20 kHz system that includes a source converter, a ballast converter, and a fixed frequency converter for generating the 20 kHz output. This system can be converted to dc simply by removing the fixed frequency converter. This present study emphasized the design and testing of the source and ballast converters. A push-pull current-fed (PPCF) design was selected for the source converter, and a 2.7 kW version of this was implemented using three 900 watt modules in parallel. The characteristic equation for two converters in parallel was derived, but this analysis did not yield any experimental methods for measuring relative stability. The three source modules were first tested individually and then in parallel as a 2.7 kW system. All tests proved to be satisfactory; the system was stable; efficiency and regulation were acceptable; and the system was fault tolerant. The design of a ballast-load converter, which was operated as a shunt regulator, was investigated. The proposed power circuit is suitable for use with BJTs because proportional base drive is easily implemented. A control circuit which minimizes switching frequency ripple and automatically bypasses a faulty shunt section was developed. A nonlinear state-space-averaged model of the shunt regulator was developed and shown to produce an accurate incremental (small-signal) dynamic model, even though the usual state-space-averaging assumptions were not met. The nonlinear model was also shown to be useful for large-signal dynamic simulation using PSpice

    Distributed control of a fault tolerant modular multilevel inverter for direct-drive wind turbine grid interfacing

    Modular generator and converter topologies are being pursued for large offshore wind turbines to achieve fault tolerance and high reliability. A centralized controller presents a single critical point of failure which has prevented a truly modular and fault tolerant system from being obtained. This study analyses the inverter circuit control requirements during normal operation and grid fault ride-through, and proposes a distributed controller design to allow inverter modules to operate independently of each other. All the modules independently estimate the grid voltage magnitude and position, and the modules are synchronised together over a CAN bus. The CAN bus is also used to interleave the PWM switching of the modules and synchronise the ADC sampling.
