    Deploying ontologies in software design

    In this thesis we will be concerned with the relation between ontologies and software design. Ontologies are studied in the artificial intelligence community as a means to explicitly represent standardised domain knowledge in order to enable knowledge shar¬ ing and reuse. We deploy ontologies in software design with emphasis on a traditional software engineering theme: error detection. In particular, we identify a type of error that is often difficult to detect: conceptual errors. These are related to the description of the domain whom which the system will operate. They require subjective knowledge about correct forms of domain description to detect them. Ontologies provide these forms of domain description and we are interested in applying them and verify their correctness(chapter 1). After presenting an in depth analysis of the field of ontologies and software testing as conceived and implemented by the software engineering and artificial intelligence communities(chapter 2), we discuss an approach which enabled us to deploy ontologies in the early phases of software development (i.e., specifications) in order to detect conceptual errors (chapter 3). This is based on the provision of ontological axioms which are used to verify conformance of specification constructs to the underpinning ontology. To facilitate the integration of ontology with applications that adopt it we developed an architecture and built tools to implement this form of conceptual error check(chapter 4). We apply and evaluate the architecture in a variety of contexts to identify potential uses (chapter 5). An implication of this method for de¬ ploying ontologies to reason about the correctness of applications is to raise our trust in the given ontologies. However, when the ontologies themselves are erroneous we might fail to reveal pernicious discrepancies. To cope with this problem we extended the architecture to a multi-layer form(chapter 4) which gives us the ability to check the ontologies themselves for correctness. We apply this multi-layer architecture to cap¬ ture errors found in a complex ontologies lattice(chapter 6). We further elaborate on the weaknesses in ontology evaluation methods and employ a technique stemming from software engineering, that of experience management, to facilitate ontology testing and deployment(chapter 7). The work presented in this thesis aims to improve practice in ontology use and identify areas to which ontologies could be of benefits other than the advocated ones of knowledge sharing and reuse(chapter 8)

    Monitoring oriented agile based web applications development methodology for small software firms in Jordan

    Small software firms (SSF) is vital to the software industry in many countries as they provide substantial growth to their economy. In Jordan, most software companies that are involved with developing Web applications are small firms. However, the extent of applying best Web applications development and management practices in these firms is limited. Besides, the existing software development methods are still lack of monitoring the quality of process and product. As a result, the Web application being developed exceeds deadlines and budget, and not meeting user requirements. Therefore, this research aims to construct a new methodology referred as Monitoring Oriented Agile Based Web Applications Development (MOGWD) Methodology for SSF. This study introduced an Extended Agile Method by extending the Scrum method with Extreme Programming (XP) elements. The Extended Agile Method was improved by combining common steps of Web design method and incorporating the Goal Oriented Monitoring Method (GOMM). The GOMM has defined twenty goals. Each goal has one or more questions. The questions are answered through the defined metrics. There are 101 qualitative metrics for monitoring the process quality, and 37 quantitative metrics for monitoring the process and product quality. Moreover, the proposed MOGWD methodology defines four phases: Plan, Do, Check and Act. The MOGWD methodology was evaluated using expert review and case study. The evaluation results show that the MOGWD methodology has gained SSF practitioners’ satisfaction and found to be practical for the real environment. This study contributes to the field of Agile based development and Web applications measurement. It also provides SSF practitioners a development methodology that monitors the quality of the process and product for Web development

    The teaching of electronics in schools and further education: a case study in curriculum change.

    This case study describes the development of Electronics within the curriculum in line with how both (Reid and Walker I975, Case Studies in Curriculum Change) and (Goodson I983, School Subjects and Curriculum Change) discussed changes in terms of theories of curriculum change. Alternative definitions of the term innovation are reviewed and for the purpose of this study a definition is adopted which includes syllabus change and major changes of scale and strategy. The study gives an outline of the major theories of innovation and implementation strategy. Features of centralisation and rationalisation are described insofar as these features led to current educational initiatives. An account Is given of how Electronics developed as a topic within ‘A’ level Physics, a subject within B.E.T.E.C. (previously O.N.C/T.E.C.) and as a separate G.C.E. subject. Data on examination entries In G.C.E. and C.S.E. Electronics are presented. These data are related to the- size of L.E.A.s, the type of centre, and also to explore the viability of G.C.E./G.C.S.E. provision in Electronics. Initiatives such as M.E.P., T.V.E.I., C.P.V.E., S.S.C.R. are described as they are expected to have a significant impact on the growth of Electronics. The position of Electronics within the curriculum and its educational value are discussed. Comment is made on the Systems and Components approaches to Electronics and on the importance of project work. Teacher difficulties with project work are noted and suggestions are made on the use and range of equipment available so that a suitable teaching style may be -developed

    The Vibrancy and Resilience of British High Streets

    British high streets have endured significant economic and cultural challenges both in the leadup to and as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic. The volatile and challenging socio-economic environment has been brought about by the lingering effects of the 2008 recession, high business rates, competition from online retailers, and the impact and implications of the global pandemic. The changes to the high street retail landscape have been recorded using new sources of data that can supplement traditional data sources such as local government retail surveys. New sources of data such as consumer data, property portal data and mobility data are more spatially and temporally granular. As a result, local governments, the retail sector and stakeholders can use these emerging forms of data to create more easily updateable measures of high street composition and performance. This thesis utilises the Local Data Company’s Britain-wide database on retail location, type and vacancy. The data ranges between the start of 2017 and June of 2021, containing around 800,000 records of occupiers. The analysis within this thesis starts by describing the composition and vibrancy of British high streets in the lead-up to the pandemic. Next, the thesis provides an evaluation of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent shift towards remote working on the viable resilience of commuter towns. This section is followed by an exploration of the short-term impacts of the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions on the resilience of Britain’s high streets. Finally, the application of new forms of data in informing local government high street regeneration policy is studied as part of a knowledge exchange with the London Borough of Camden. This thesis contributes to our understanding of how the circumstances of different British high streets can be monitored and mapped, with the goal of improving understanding of vibrancy, resilience, and potential for regeneration

    Gabriel Harvey and the History of Reading: Essays by Lisa Jardine and others

    Few articles in the humanities have had the impact of Lisa Jardine and Anthony Grafton’s seminal ‘Studied for Action’ (1990), a study of the reading practices of Elizabethan polymath and prolific annotator Gabriel Harvey. Their excavation of the setting, methods and ambitions of Harvey’s encounters with his books ignited the History of Reading, an interdisciplinary field which quickly became one of the most exciting corners of the scholarly cosmos. A generation inspired by the model of Harvey fanned out across the world’s libraries and archives, seeking to reveal the many creative, unexpected and curious ways that individuals throughout history responded to texts, and how these interpretations in turn illuminate past worlds. Three decades on, Harvey’s example and Jardine’s work remain central to cutting-edge scholarship in the History of Reading. By uniting ‘Studied for Action’ with published and unpublished studies on Harvey by Jardine, Grafton and the scholars they have influenced, this collection provides a unique lens on the place of marginalia in textual, intellectual and cultural history. The chapters capture subsequent work on Harvey and map the fields opened by Jardine and Grafton’s original article, collectively offering a posthumous tribute to Lisa Jardine and an authoritative overview of the History of Reading
