Asimov's Coming Back
Ever since the word ‘ROBOT’ first appeared in a science\ud
fiction in 1921, scientists and engineers have been trying\ud
different ways to create it. Present technologies in\ud
mechanical and electrical engineering makes it possible\ud
to have robots in such places as industrial manufacturing\ud
and assembling lines. Although they are\ud
essentially robotic arms or similarly driven by electrical\ud
power and signal control, they could be treated the\ud
primitive pioneers in application. Researches in the\ud
laboratories go much further. Interdisciplines are\ud
directing the evolution of more advanced robots. Among these are artificial\ud
intelligence, computational neuroscience, mathematics and robotics. These disciplines\ud
come closer as more complex problems emerge.\ud
From a robot’s point of view, three basic abilities are needed. They are thinking\ud
and memory, sensory perceptions, control and behaving. These are capabilities we\ud
human beings have to adapt ourselves to the environment. Although\ud
researches on robots, especially on intelligent thinking, progress slowly, a revolution\ud
for biological inspired robotics is spreading out in the laboratories all over the world
Multicriteria global optimization for biocircuit design
One of the challenges in Synthetic Biology is to design circuits with
increasing levels of complexity. While circuits in Biology are complex and
subject to natural tradeoffs, most synthetic circuits are simple in terms of
the number of regulatory regions, and have been designed to meet a single
design criterion. In this contribution we introduce a multiobjective
formulation for the design of biocircuits. We set up the basis for an advanced
optimization tool for the modular and systematic design of biocircuits capable
of handling high levels of complexity and multiple design criteria. Our
methodology combines the efficiency of global Mixed Integer Nonlinear
Programming solvers with multiobjective optimization techniques. Through a
number of examples we show the capability of the method to generate non
intuitive designs with a desired functionality setting up a priori the desired
level of complexity. The presence of more than one competing objective provides
a realistic design setting where every design solution represents a trade-off
between different criteria. The tool can be useful to explore and identify
different design principles for synthetic gene circuits
Neuromorphic analogue VLSI
Neuromorphic systems emulate the organization and function of nervous systems. They are usually composed of analogue electronic circuits that are fabricated in the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) medium using very large-scale integration (VLSI) technology. However, these neuromorphic systems are not another kind of digital computer in which abstract neural networks are simulated symbolically in terms of their mathematical behavior. Instead, they directly embody, in the physics of their CMOS circuits, analogues of the physical processes that underlie the computations of neural systems. The significance of neuromorphic systems is that they offer a method of exploring neural computation in a medium whose physical behavior is analogous to that of biological nervous systems and that operates in real time irrespective of size. The implications of this approach are both scientific and practical. The study of neuromorphic systems provides a bridge between levels of understanding. For example, it provides a link between the physical processes of neurons and their computational significance. In addition, the synthesis of neuromorphic systems transposes our knowledge of neuroscience into practical devices that can interact directly with the real world in the same way that biological nervous systems do
Synthetic biology—putting engineering into biology
Synthetic biology is interpreted as the engineering-driven building of increasingly complex biological entities for novel applications. Encouraged by progress in the design of artificial gene networks, de novo DNA synthesis and protein engineering, we review the case for this emerging discipline. Key aspects of an engineering approach are purpose-orientation, deep insight into the underlying scientific principles, a hierarchy of abstraction including suitable interfaces between and within the levels of the hierarchy, standardization and the separation of design and fabrication. Synthetic biology investigates possibilities to implement these requirements into the process of engineering biological systems. This is illustrated on the DNA level by the implementation of engineering-inspired artificial operations such as toggle switching, oscillating or production of spatial patterns. On the protein level, the functionally self-contained domain structure of a number of proteins suggests possibilities for essentially Lego-like recombination which can be exploited for reprogramming DNA binding domain specificities or signaling pathways. Alternatively, computational design emerges to rationally reprogram enzyme function. Finally, the increasing facility of de novo DNA synthesis—synthetic biology’s system fabrication process—supplies the possibility to implement novel designs for ever more complex systems. Some of these elements have merged to realize the first tangible synthetic biology applications in the area of manufacturing of pharmaceutical compounds.

Network Topologies That Can Achieve Dual Function of Adaptation and Noise Attenuation.
Many signaling systems execute adaptation under circumstances that require noise attenuation. Here, we identify an intrinsic trade-off existing between sensitivity and noise attenuation in the three-node networks. We demonstrate that although fine-tuning timescales in three-node adaptive networks can partially mediate this trade-off in this context, it prolongs adaptation time and imposes unrealistic parameter constraints. By contrast, four-node networks can effectively decouple adaptation and noise attenuation to achieve dual function without a trade-off, provided that these functions are executed sequentially. We illustrate ideas in seven biological examples, including Dictyostelium discoideum chemotaxis and the p53 signaling network and find that adaptive networks are often associated with a noise attenuation module. Our approach may be applicable to finding network design principles for other dual and multiple functions
