    Migration from Teleoperation to Autonomy via Modular Sensor and Mobility Bricks

    In this thesis, the teleoperated communications of a Remotec ANDROS robot have been reverse engineered. This research has used the information acquired through the reverse engineering process to enhance the teleoperation and add intelligence to the initially automated robot. The main contribution of this thesis is the implementation of the mobility brick paradigm, which enables autonomous operations, using the commercial teleoperated ANDROS platform. The brick paradigm is a generalized architecture for a modular approach to robotics. This architecture and the contribution of this thesis are a paradigm shift from the proprietary commercial models that exist today. The modular system of sensor bricks integrates the transformed mobility platform and defines it as a mobility brick. In the wall following application implemented in this work, the mobile robotic system acquires intelligence using the range sensor brick. This application illustrates a way to alleviate the burden on the human operator and delegate certain tasks to the robot. Wall following is one among several examples of giving a degree of autonomy to an essentially teleoperated robot through the Sensor Brick System. Indeed once the proprietary robot has been altered into a mobility brick; the possibilities for autonomy are numerous and vary with different sensor bricks. The autonomous system implemented is not a fixed-application robot but rather a non-specific autonomy capable platform. Meanwhile the native controller and the computer-interfaced teleoperation are still available when necessary. Rather than trading off by switching from teleoperation to autonomy, this system provides the flexibility to switch between the two at the operator’s command. The contributions of this thesis reside in the reverse engineering of the original robot, its upgrade to a computer-interfaced teleoperated system, the mobility brick paradigm and the addition of autonomy capabilities. The application of a robot autonomously following a wall is subsequently implemented, tested and analyzed in this work. The analysis provides the programmer with information on controlling the robot and launching the autonomous function. The results are conclusive and open up the possibilities for a variety of autonomous applications for mobility platforms using modular sensor bricks

    Non-determinism in the narrative structure of video games

    PhD ThesisAt the present time, computer games represent a finite interactive system. Even in their more experimental forms, the number of possible interactions between player and NPCs (non-player characters) and among NPCs and the game world has a finite number and is led by a deterministic system in which events can therefore be predicted. This implies that the story itself, seen as the series of events that will unfold during gameplay, is a closed system that can be predicted a priori. This study looks beyond this limitation, and identifies the elements needed for the emergence of a non-finite, emergent narrative structure. Two major contributions are offered through this research. The first contribution comes in the form of a clear categorization of the narrative structures embracing all video game production since the inception of the medium. In order to look for ways to generate a non-deterministic narrative in games, it is necessary to first gain a clear understanding of the current narrative structures implemented and how their impact on users’ experiencing of the story. While many studies have observed the storytelling aspect, no attempt has been made to systematically distinguish among the different ways designers decide how stories are told in games. The second contribution is guided by the following research question: Is it possible to incorporate non-determinism into the narrative structure of computer games? The hypothesis offered is that non-determinism can be incorporated by means of nonlinear dynamical systems in general and Cellular Automata in particular

    Non-Standard Sound Synthesis with Dynamic Models

    Full version unavailable due to 3rd party copyright restrictions.This Thesis proposes three main objectives: (i) to provide the concept of a new generalized non-standard synthesis model that would provide the framework for incorporating other non-standard synthesis approaches; (ii) to explore dynamic sound modeling through the application of new non-standard synthesis techniques and procedures; and (iii) to experiment with dynamic sound synthesis for the creation of novel sound objects. In order to achieve these objectives, this Thesis introduces a new paradigm for non-standard synthesis that is based in the algorithmic assemblage of minute wave segments to form sound waveforms. This paradigm is called Extended Waveform Segment Synthesis (EWSS) and incorporates a hierarchy of algorithmic models for the generation of microsound structures. The concepts of EWSS are illustrated with the development and presentation of a novel non-standard synthesis system, the Dynamic Waveform Segment Synthesis (DWSS). DWSS features and combines a variety of algorithmic models for direct synthesis generation: list generation and permutation, tendency masks, trigonometric functions, stochastic functions, chaotic functions and grammars. The core mechanism of DWSS is based in an extended application of Cellular Automata. The potential of the synthetic capabilities of DWSS is explored in a series of Case Studies where a number of sound object were generated revealing (i) the capabilities of the system to generate sound morphologies belonging to other non-standard synthesis approaches and, (ii) the capabilities of the system of generating novel sound objects with dynamic morphologies. The introduction of EWSS and DWSS is preceded by an extensive and critical overview on the concepts of microsound synthesis, algorithmic composition, the two cultures of computer music, the heretical approach in composition, non- standard synthesis and sonic emergence along with the thorough examination of algorithmic models and their application in sound synthesis and electroacoustic composition. This Thesis also proposes (i) a new definition for “algorithmic composition”, (ii) the term “totalistic algorithmic composition”, and (iii) four discrete aspects of non-standard synthesis

    Network-Wide Monitoring And Debugging

    Modern networks can encompass over 100,000 servers. Managing such an extensive network with a diverse set of network policies has become more complicated with the introduction of programmable hardwares and distributed network functions. Furthermore, service level agreements (SLAs) require operators to maintain high performance and availability with low latencies. Therefore, it is crucial for operators to resolve any issues in networks quickly. The problems can occur at any layer of stack: network (load imbalance), data-plane (incorrect packet processing), control-plane (bugs in configuration) and the coordination among them. Unfortunately, existing debugging tools are not sufficient to monitor, analyze, or debug modern networks; either they lack visibility in the network, require manual analysis, or cannot check for some properties. These limitations arise from the outdated view of the networks, i.e., that we can look at a single component in isolation. In this thesis, we describe a new approach that looks at measuring, understanding, and debugging the network across devices and time. We also target modern stateful packet processing devices: programmable data-planes and distributed network functions as these becoming increasingly common part of the network. Our key insight is to leverage both in-network packet processing (to collect precise measurements) and out-of-network processing (to coordinate measurements and scale analytics). The resulting systems we design based on this approach can support testing and monitoring at the data center scale, and can handle stateful data in the network. We automate the collection and analysis of measurement data to save operator time and take a step towards self driving networks

    Fault and Defect Tolerant Computer Architectures: Reliable Computing With Unreliable Devices

    This research addresses design of a reliable computer from unreliable device technologies. A system architecture is developed for a fault and defect tolerant (FDT) computer. Trade-offs between different techniques are studied and yield and hardware cost models are developed. Fault and defect tolerant designs are created for the processor and the cache memory. Simulation results for the content-addressable memory (CAM)-based cache show 90% yield with device failure probabilities of 3 x 10(-6), three orders of magnitude better than non fault tolerant caches of the same size. The entire processor achieves 70% yield with device failure probabilities exceeding 10(-6). The required hardware redundancy is approximately 15 times that of a non-fault tolerant design. While larger than current FT designs, this architecture allows the use of devices much more likely to fail than silicon CMOS. As part of model development, an improved model is derived for NAND Multiplexing. The model is the first accurate model for small and medium amounts of redundancy. Previous models are extended to account for dependence between the inputs and produce more accurate results

    Staged Magic in Early English Drama

    In late medieval and early modern England, magic was everywhere. Although contested, occult beliefs and practices flourished among all classes of people, and they appeared regularly as a subject of early English drama. My dissertation focuses on staged magic in early English drama, demonstrating the ways in which it generates metacritical commentary. It argues that magic in drama serves more than just a symbolic function, but rather, some early English drama saw itself as performing a kind of magic that was also efficacious. To this end, this project theorizes that drama participated in forms of contemporary magic that circulated at the time. This dissertation focuses on representations of magic in early English drama, specifically in the Croxton Play of the Sacrament (ca. 1471), Robert Greene's Friar Bacon and Friar Bungay (1588-92), William Shakespeare's The Tempest (1610-1), and John Milton's A Maske Performed at Ludlow Castle (1634). These early English plays stage their magic as socially and personally beneficial, not just illusory, flawed, or demonic. Whether staging magic as a critique or apology for its own medium, however, the plays suggest that theater draws upon magic to depict itself as efficacious. This project thus reads magic as both a metaphoric, literary convention and its own entity with accompanying political and cultural effects. Examining magic and its representation as part of a continuum--as contemporary audiences would have done--offers a clearer picture of what magic is doing in the plays and how early observers might have apprehended its effects. This dissertation offers a textually based cultural context for the magic found within its central plays, bringing extraliterary magical texts into conversation with literary, dramatic texts. Because the borders between natural philosophy, religion, and magic were not clearly defined in early modern England, this project draws as well upon scholarship and primary materials in the history of science and religion. The motivation of this project is to reanimate early English theater with a sense of wonder and magic that it historically offered and that it continues to bring to readers and audiences to this day

    Models of self-organization in biological development

    Bibliography: p. 297-320.In this thesis we thus wish to consider the concept of self-organization as an overall paradigm within which various theoretical approaches to the study of development may be described and evaluated. In the process, an attempt is made to give a fair and reasonably comprehensive overview of leading modelling approaches in developmental biology, with particular reference to self-organization. The work proceeds from a physical or mathematical perspective, but not unduly so - the major mathematical derivations and results are relegated to appendices - and attempts to fill a perceived gap in the extant review literature, in its breadth and attempted impartiality of scope. A characteristic of the present account is its markedly interdisciplinary approach: it seeks to place self-organization models that have been proposed for biological pattern formation and morphogenesis both within the necessary experimentally-derived biological framework, and in the wider physical context of self-organization and the mathematical techniques that may be employed in its study. Hence the thesis begins with appropriate introductory chapters to provide the necessary background, before proceeding to a discussion of the models themselves. It should be noted that the work is structured so as to be read sequentially, from beginning to end; and that the chapters in the main text were designed to be understood essentially independently of the appendices, although frequent references to the latter are given. In view of the vastness of the available information and literature on developmental biology, a working knowledge of embryological principles must be assumed. Consequently, rather than attempting a comprehensive introduction to experimental embryology, chapter 2 presents just a few biological preliminaries, to 'set the scene', outlining some of the major issues that we are dealing with, and sketching an indication of the current status of knowledge and research on development. The chapter is aimed at furnishing the necessary biological, experimental background, in the light of which the rest of the thesis should be read, and which should indeed underpin and motivate any theoretical discussions. We encounter the different hierarchical levels of description in this chapter, as well as some of the model systems whose experimental study has proved most fruitful, some of the concepts of experimental embryology, and a brief reference to some questions that will not be addressed in this work. With chapter 3, we temporarily move away from developmental biology, and consider the wider physical and mathematical concepts related to the study of self-organization. Here we encounter physical and chemical examples of spontaneous structure formation, thermodynamic considerations, and different approaches to the description of complexity. Mathematical approaches to the dynamical study of self-organization are also introduced, with specific reference to reaction-diffusion equations, and we consider some possible chemical and biochemical realizations of self-organizing kinetics. The chapter may be read in conjunction with appendix A, which gives a somewhat more in-depth study of reaction-diffusion equations, their analysis and properties, as an example of the approach to the analysis of self-organizing dynamical systems and mathematically-formulated models. Appendix B contains a more detailed discussion of the Belousov-Zhabotinskii reaction, which provides a vivid chemical paradigm for the concepts of symmetry-breaking and self-organization. Chapter 3 concludes with a brief discussion of a model biological system, the cellular slime mould, which displays rudimentary development and has thus proved amenable to detailed study and modelling. The following two chapters form the core of the thesis, as they contain discussions of the detailed application of theoretical concepts and models, largely based on self-organization, to various developmental situations. We encounter a diversity of models which has arisen largely in the last quarter century, each of which attempts to account for some aspect of biological pattern formation and morphogenesis; an aim of the discussion is to assess the extent of the underlying unity of these models in terms of the self-organization paradigm. In chapter 4 chemical pre-patterns and positional information are considered, without the overt involvement of cells in the patterning. In chapter 5, on the other hand, cellular interactions and activities are explicitly taken into account; this chapter should be read together with appendix C, which contains a brief introduction to the mathematical formulation and analysis of some of the models discussed. The penultimate chapter, 6, considers two other approaches to the study of development; one of these has faded away, while the other is still apparently in the ascendant. The assumptions underlying catastrophe theory, the value of its applications to developmental biology and the reasons for its decline in popularity, are considered. Lastly, discrete approaches, including the recently fashionable cellular automata, are dealt with, and the possible roles of rule-based interactions, such as of the so-called L-systems, and of fractals and chaos are evaluated. Chapter 7 then concludes the thesis with a brief assessment of the value of the self-organization concept to the study of biological development
