    Metaheuristic approaches for optimal broadcasting design in metropolitan MANETs

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, February 12-16, 2007Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) are composed of a set of communicating devices which are able to spontaneously interconnect without any pre-existing infrastructure. In such scenario, broadcasting becomes an operation of tremendous importance for the own existence and operation of the network. Optimizing a broadcasting strategy in MANETs is a multiobjective problem accounting for three goals: reaching as many stations as possible, minimizing the network utilization, and reducing the duration of the operation itself. This research, which has been developed within the OPLINK project (http://oplink.lcc.uma.es), faces a wide study about this problem in metropolitan MANETs with up to seven different advanced multiobjective metaheuristics. They all compute Pareto fronts of solutions which empower a human designer with the ability of choosing the preferred configuration for the network. The quality of these fronts is evaluated by using the hypervolume metric. The obtained results show that the SPEA2 algorithm is the most accurate metaheuristic for solving the broadcasting problem.Publicad

    Optimizing the DFCN Broadcast Protocol with a Parallel Cooperative Strategy of Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms

    Proceeding of: 5th International Conference, EMO 2009, Nantes, France, April 7-10, 2009This work presents the application of a parallel coopera- tive optimization approach to the broadcast operation in mobile ad-hoc networks (manets). The optimization of the broadcast operation im- plies satisfying several objectives simultaneously, so a multi-objective approach has been designed. The optimization lies on searching the best configurations of the dfcn broadcast protocol for a given manet sce- nario. The cooperation of a team of multi-objective evolutionary al- gorithms has been performed with a novel optimization model. Such model is a hybrid parallel algorithm that combines a parallel island- based scheme with a hyperheuristic approach. Results achieved by the algorithms in different stages of the search process are analyzed in order to grant more computational resources to the most suitable algorithms.     Modeling and simulation of routing protocol for ad hoc networks combining queuing network analysis and ANT colony algorithms

    The field of Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) has gained an important part of the interest of researchers and become very popular in last few years. MANETs can operate without fixed infrastructure and can survive rapid changes in the network topology. They can be studied formally as graphs in which the set of edges varies in time. The main method for evaluating the performance of MANETs is simulation. Our thesis presents a new adaptive and dynamic routing algorithm for MANETs inspired by the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithms in combination with network delay analysis. Ant colony optimization algorithms have all been inspired by a specific foraging behavior of ant colonies which are able to find, if not the shortest, at least a very good path connecting the colony’s nest with a source of food. Our evaluation of MANETs is based on the evaluation of the mean End-to-End delay to send a packet from source to destination node through a MANET. We evaluated the mean End-to-End delay as one of the most important performance evaluation metrics in computer networks. Finally, we evaluate our proposed ant algorithm by a comparative study with respect to one of the famous On-Demand (reactive) routing protocols called Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) protocol. The evaluation shows that, the ant algorithm provides a better performance by reducing the mean End-to-End delay than the AODV algorithm. We investigated various simulation scenarios with different node density and pause times. Our new algorithm gives good results under certain conditions such as, increasing the pause time and decreasing node density. The scenarios that are applied for evaluating our routing algorithm have the following assumptions: 2-D rectangular area, no obstacles, bi-directional links, fixed number of nodes operate for the whole simulation time and nodes movements are performed according to the Random Waypoint Mobility (RWM) or the Boundless Simulation Area Mobility (BSAM) model.     Natural computing for vehicular networks

    La presente tesis aborda el diseño inteligente de soluciones para el despliegue de redes vehiculares ad-hoc (vehicular ad hoc networks, VANETs). Estas son redes de comunicación inalámbrica formada principalmente por vehículos y elementos de infraestructura vial. Las VANETs ofrecen la oportunidad para desarrollar aplicaciones revolucionarias en el ámbito de la seguridad y eficiencia vial. Al ser un dominio tan novedoso, existe una serie de cuestiones abiertas, como el diseño de la infraestructura de estaciones base necesaria y el encaminamiento (routing) y difusión (broadcasting) de paquetes de datos, que todavía no han podido resolverse empleando estrategias clásicas. Es por tanto necesario crear y estudiar nuevas técnicas que permitan de forma eficiente, eficaz, robusta y flexible resolver dichos problemas. Este trabajo de tesis doctoral propone el uso de computación inspirada en la naturaleza o Computación Natural (CN) para tratar algunos de los problemas más importantes en el ámbito de las VANETs, porque representan una serie de algoritmos versátiles, flexibles y eficientes para resolver problemas complejos. Además de resolver los problemas VANET en los que nos enfocamos, se han realizado avances en el uso de estas técnicas para que traten estos problemas de forma más eficiente y eficaz. Por último, se han llevado a cabo pruebas reales de concepto empleando vehículos y dispositivos de comunicación reales en la ciudad de Málaga (España). La tesis se ha estructurado en cuatro grandes fases. En la primera fase, se han estudiado los principales fundamentos en los que se basa esta tesis. Para ello se hizo un estudio exhaustivo sobre las tecnologías que emplean las redes vehiculares, para así, identificar sus principales debilidades. A su vez, se ha profundizado en el análisis de la CN como herramienta eficiente para resolver problemas de optimización complejos, y de cómo utilizarla en la resolución de los problemas en VANETs. En la segunda fase, se han abordado cuatro problemas de optimización en redes vehiculares: la transferencia de archivos, el encaminamiento (routing) de paquetes, la difusión (broadcasting) de mensajes y el diseño de la infraestructura de estaciones base necesaria para desplegar redes vehiculares. Para la resolución de dichos problemas se han propuesto diferentes algoritmos CN que se clasifican en algoritmos evolutivos (evolutionary algorithms, EAs), métodos de inteligencia de enjambre (swarm intelligence, SI) y enfriamiento simulado (simulated annealing, SA). Los resultados obtenidos han proporcionado protocolos de han mejorado de forma significativa las comunicaciones en VANETs. En la tercera y última fase, se han realizado experimentos empleando vehículos reales circulando por las carreteras de Málaga y que se comunicaban entre sí. El principal objetivo de estas pruebas ha sido el validar las mejoras que presentan los protocolos que se han optimizado empleando CN. Los resultados obtenidos de las fases segunda y tercera confirman la hipótesis de trabajo, que la CN es una herramienta eficiente para tratar el diseño inteligente en redes vehiculares

    Geographic GReedy routing with ACO recovery strategy GRACO

    International audienceGeographic routing is an attractive routing strategy in wireless sensor networks. It works well in dense networks, but it may suffer from the void problem. For this purpose, a recovery step is required to guarantee packet delivery. Face routing has widely been used as a recovery strategy since proved to guarantee delivery. However, it relies on a planar graph not always achievable in realistic wireless networks and may generate long paths. In this paper, we propose GRACO, a new geographic routing algorithm that combines a greedy forwarding and a recovery strategy based on swarm intelligence. During recovery, ant packets search for alternative paths and drop pheromone trails to guide next packets within the network. GRACO avoids holes and produces near optimal paths. Simulation results demonstrate that GRACO leads to a significant improvement of routing performance and scalability when compared to the literature algorithms

    Técnicas de optimización paralelas : esquema híbrido basado en hiperheurísticas y computación evolutiva

    Optimisation is the process of selecting the best element fr om a set of available alternatives. Solutions are termed good or bad depending on its performance for a set of objectives. Several algorithms to deal with such kind of problems have been defined in the literature. Metaheuristics are one of the most prominent techniques. They are a class of modern heuristics whose main goal is to com bine heuristics in a problem independent way with the aim of improving their per formance. Meta- heuristics have reported high-quality solutions in severa l fields. One of the reasons of the good behaviour of metaheuristics is that they are defin ed in general terms. Therefore, metaheuristic algorithms can be adapted to fit th e needs of most real-life optimisation. However, such an adaptation is a hard task, and it requires a high computational and user effort. There are two main ways of reducing the effort associated to th e usage of meta- heuristics. First, the application of hyperheuristics and parameter setting strategies facilitates the process of tackling novel optimisation pro blems and instances. A hyperheuristic can be viewed as a heuristic that iterativel y chooses between a set of given low-level metaheuristics in order to solve an optim isation problem. By using hyperheuristics, metaheuristic practitioners do no t need to manually test a large number of metaheuristics and parameterisations for d iscovering the proper algorithms to use. Instead, they can define the set of configur ations which must be tested, and the model tries to automatically detect the be st-behaved ones, in order to grant more resources to them. Second, the usage of pa rallel environments might speedup the process of automatic testing, so high qual ity solutions might be achieved in less time. This research focuses on the design of novel hyperheuristic s and defines a set of models to allow their usage in parallel environments. Differ ent hyperheuristics for controlling mono-objective and multi-objective multi-po int optimisation strategies have been defined. Moreover, a set of novel multiobjectivisa tion techniques has been proposed. In addition, with the aim of facilitating the usage of multiobjectivi- sation, the performance of models that combine the usage of m ultiobjectivisation and hyperheuristics has been studied. The proper performance of the proposed techniques has been v alidated with a set of well-known benchmark optimisation problems. In addi tion, several practical and complex optimisation problems have been addressed. Som e of the analysed problems arise in the communication field. In addition, a pac king problem proposed in a competition has been faced up. The proposals for such pro blems have not been limited to use the problem-independent schemes. Inste ad, new metaheuristics, operators and local search strategies have been defined. Suc h schemes have been integrated with the designed parallel hyperheuristics wit h the aim of accelerating the achievement of high quality solutions, and with the aim of fa cilitating their usage. In several complex optimisation problems, the current best -known solutions have been found with the methods defined in this dissertation.Los problemas de optimización son aquellos en los que hay que elegir cuál es la solución más adecuada entre un conjunto de alternativas. Actualmente existe una gran cantidad de algoritmos que permiten abordar este tipo de problemas. Entre ellos, las metaheurísticas son una de las técnicas más usadas. El uso de metaheurísticas ha posibilitado la resolución de una gran cantidad de problemas en diferentes campos. Esto se debe a que las metaheurísticas son técnicas generales, con lo que disponen de una gran cantidad de elementos o parámetros que pueden ser adaptados a la hora de afrontar diferentes problemas de optimización. Sin embargo, la elección de dichos parámetros no es sencilla, por lo que generalmente se requiere un gran esfuerzo computacional, y un gran esfuerzo por parte del usuario de estas técnicas. Existen diversas técnicas que atenúan este inconveniente. Por un lado, existen varios mecanismos que permiten seleccionar los valores de dichos parámetros de forma automática. Las técnicas más simples utilizan valores fijos durante toda la ejecución, mientras que las técnicas más avanzadas, como las hiperheurísticas, adaptan los valores usados a las necesidades de cada fase de optimización. Además, estas técnicas permiten usar varias metaheurísticas de forma simultánea. Por otro lado, el uso de técnicas paralelas permite acelerar el proceso de testeo automático, reduciendo el tiempo necesario para obtener soluciones de alta calidad. El objetivo principal de esta tesis ha sido diseñar nuevas hiperheurísticas e integrarlas en el modelo paralelo basado en islas. Estas técnicas se han usado para controlar los parámetros de varias metaheurísticas evolutivas. Se han definido diversas hiperheurísticas que han permitido abordar tanto problemas mono-objetivo como problemas multi-objetivo. Además, se han definido un conjunto de multiobjetivizaciones, que a su vez se han beneficiado de las hiperheurísticas propuestas. Las técnicas diseñadas se han validado con algunos de los problemas de test más ampliamente utilizados. Además, se han abordado un conjunto de problemas de optimización prácticos. Concretamente, se han tratado tres problemas que surgen en el ámbito de las telecomunicaciones, y un problema de empaquetado. En dichos problemas, además de usar las hiperheurísticas y multiobjetivizaciones, se han definido nuevos algoritmos, operadores, y estrategias de búsqueda local. En varios de los problemas, el uso combinado de todas estas técnicas ha posibilitado obtener las mejores soluciones encontradas hasta el momento
