    An improved chaos method for monitoring the depth of anaesthesia

    This paper proposed a new method to monitor the depth of anaesthesia (DoA) by modifying the Hurst parameters in Chaos method. Two new indices (CDoA and CsDoA) are proposed to estimate the anaesthesia states of patients. In order to reduce the fluctuation of CDoA and CsDoA trends, the Chaos and Modified Detrended Average methods (C-MDMA) are combined together. Compared with Bispectrum (BIS) index, CDoA, the CsDoA and C-MDMA trends are close to the BIS trend in the whole scale from 100 to 0 with a full recording time

    End to End Performance Analysis of Relay Cooperative Communication Based on Parked Cars

    Parking lots (PLs) are usually full with cars. If these cars are formed into a self-organizing vehicular network, they can be new kind of road side units (RSUs) in urban area to provide communication data forwarding between mobile terminals nearby and a base station. However cars in PLs can leave at any time, which is neglected in the existing studies. In this paper, we investigate relay cooperative communication based on parked cars in PLs. Taking the impact of the car's leaving behavior into consideration, we derive the expressions of outage probability in a two-hop cooperative communication and its link capacity. Finally, the numerical results show that the impact of a car's arriving time is greater than the impact of the duration the car has parked on outage probability.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, accepted by ICACT201

    Security versus Reliability Analysis of Opportunistic Relaying

    Physical-layer security is emerging as a promising paradigm of securing wireless communications against eavesdropping between legitimate users, when the main link spanning from source to destination has better propagation conditions than the wiretap link from source to eavesdropper. In this paper, we identify and analyze the tradeoffs between the security and reliability of wireless communications in the presence of eavesdropping attacks. Typically, the reliability of the main link can be improved by increasing the source's transmit power (or decreasing its date rate) to reduce the outage probability, which unfortunately increases the risk that an eavesdropper succeeds in intercepting the source message through the wiretap link, since the outage probability of the wiretap link also decreases when a higher transmit power (or lower date rate) is used. We characterize the security-reliability tradeoffs (SRT) of conventional direct transmission from source to destination in the presence of an eavesdropper, where the security and reliability are quantified in terms of the intercept probability by an eavesdropper and the outage probability experienced at the destination, respectively. In order to improve the SRT, we then propose opportunistic relay selection (ORS) and quantify the attainable SRT improvement upon increasing the number of relays. It is shown that given the maximum tolerable intercept probability, the outage probability of our ORS scheme approaches zero for N→∞N \to \infty, where NN is the number of relays. Conversely, given the maximum tolerable outage probability, the intercept probability of our ORS scheme tends to zero for N→∞N \to \infty.Comment: 9 pages.     This demonstration presents a novel interactive online shopping application based on visual search technologies. When users want to buy something on a shopping site, they usually have the requirement of looking for related information from other web sites. Therefore users need to switch between the web page being browsed and other websites that provide search results. The proposed application enables users to naturally search products of interest when they browse a web page, and make their even causal purchase intent easily satisfied. The interactive shopping experience is characterized by: 1) in session - it allows users to specify the purchase intent in the browsing session, instead of leaving the current page and navigating to other websites; 2) in context - -the browsed web page provides implicit context information which helps infer user purchase preferences; 3) in focus - users easily specify their search interest using gesture on touch devices and do not need to formulate queries in search box; 4) natural-gesture inputs and visual-based search provides users a natural shopping experience.     Change Management, Quality Assurance and Race: Advancing Race-Based Equity in Canadian Higher Education by Leveraging Established Institutional Mechanisms

    Higher education in Canada has been well regarded for decades. Academically rigorous programs and institutions graduate strong students while also attracting top local and global talent as employees to their institutional communities. However, the field of Critical Race Theory, among others, explicates that higher education institutions are not equitable for all bodies. Individuals with intersectionalities inclusive of the Black Diaspora continue to be excluded from academic success and success as employee stakeholders in higher education institutions. Critically, Black bodies continue to struggle with entry to higher education and means to economic success post-graduation, as well as lack of inclusivity to the institutional structure as an employee. Thus, the author of this Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) presents a discussion of present-day experiences of Black bodies at Postsecondary MV with the intention of challenging anti-Black racism. Through current research and the author’s lived professional experience, the writer demonstrates that Black bodies are frequently the recipients of physical intimidation on campuses, isolation at work, discriminatory hiring practices that block senior leadership roles, barriers to academic success as a student, and additional exclusionary acts. Further, the author recommends a solution focused on changes to quality assurance and continual improvement policy and procedures to improve equity, diversity and inclusion of stakeholders at an institutional level. This change is led through authentic and adaptive leadership practices, and informed by Lewin’s Theory of Planned Change and Humble Inquiry. The change solution presented offers a pervasive yet manageable method to increased stakeholder accountability, engagement, and action towards the change of an ubiquitous monoculture found in Postsecondary MV. The author acknowledges the highly political and sensitive nature of the topic. Thus, the writer recommends advancing anti-Black racism through established practices across the institution to establish shared ownership for the necessary culture change. With intention, the author of the OIP unveils a pragmatic change solution that is manageable for over-burdened employees in higher education while avoiding tokenistic strategies for equity
