As-Built 3D Heritage City Modelling to Support Numerical Structural Analysis: Application to the Assessment of an Archaeological Remain
Terrestrial laser scanning is a widely used technology to digitise archaeological, architectural
and cultural heritage. This allows for modelling the assets’ real condition in comparison with
traditional data acquisition methods. This paper, based on the case study of the basilica in the Baelo
Claudia archaeological ensemble (Tarifa, Spain), justifies the need of accurate heritage modelling
against excessively simplified approaches in order to support structural safety analysis. To do this,
after validating the 3Dmeshing process frompoint cloud data, the semi-automatic digital reconstitution
of the basilica columns is performed. Next, a geometric analysis is conducted to calculate the structural
alterations of the columns. In order to determine the structural performance, focusing both on the
accuracy and suitability of the geometric models, static and modal analyses are carried out by means of
the finite element method (FEM) on three different models for the most unfavourable column in terms
of structural damage: (1) as-built (2) simplified and (3) ideal model without deformations. Finally,
the outcomes show that the as-built modelling enhances the conservation status analysis of the 3D
heritage city (in terms of realistic compliance factor values), although further automation still needs to
be implemented in the modelling process
ITEM: Inter-Texture Error Measurement for 3D Meshes
We introduce a simple and innovative method to compare any two texture maps, regardless of their sizes, aspect ratios, or even masks, as long as they are both meant to be mapped onto the same 3D mesh. Our system is based on a zero-distortion 3D mesh unwrapping technique which compares two new adapted texture atlases with the same mask but different texel colors, and whose every texel covers the same area in 3D. Once these adapted atlases are created, we measure their difference with ITEM-RMSE, a slightly modified version of the standard RMSE defined for images. ITEM-RMSE is more meaningful and reliable than RMSE because it only takes into account the texels inside the mask, since they are the only ones that will actually be used during rendering. Our method is not only very useful to compare the space efficiency of different texture atlas generation algorithms, but also to quantify texture loss in compression schemes for multi-resolution textured 3D meshes
Multilevel Solvers for Unstructured Surface Meshes
Parameterization of unstructured surface meshes is of fundamental importance in many applications of digital geometry processing. Such parameterization approaches give rise to large and exceedingly ill-conditioned systems which are difficult or impossible to solve without the use of sophisticated multilevel preconditioning strategies. Since the underlying meshes are very fine to begin with, such multilevel preconditioners require mesh coarsening to build an appropriate hierarchy. In this paper we consider several strategies for the construction of hierarchies using ideas from mesh simplification algorithms used in the computer graphics literature. We introduce two novel hierarchy construction schemes and demonstrate their superior performance when used in conjunction with a multigrid preconditioner
Ordered Statistics Vertex Extraction and Tracing Algorithm (OSVETA)
We propose an algorithm for identifying vertices from three dimensional (3D)
meshes that are most important for a geometric shape creation. Extracting such
a set of vertices from a 3D mesh is important in applications such as digital
watermarking, but also as a component of optimization and triangulation. In the
first step, the Ordered Statistics Vertex Extraction and Tracing Algorithm
(OSVETA) estimates precisely the local curvature, and most important
topological features of mesh geometry. Using the vertex geometric importance
ranking, the algorithm traces and extracts a vector of vertices, ordered by
