    A Multi-core processor for hard real-time systems

    The increasing demand for new functionalities in current and future hard real-time embedded systems, like the ones deployed in automotive and avionics industries, is driving an increment in the performance required in current embedded processors. Multi-core processors represent a good design solution to cope with such higher performance requirements due to their better performance-per-watt ratio while maintaining the core design simple. Moreover, multi-cores also allow executing mixed-criticality level workloads composed of tasks with and without hard real-time requirements, maximizing the utilization of the hardware resources while guaranteeing low cost and low power consumption. Despite those benefits, current multi-core processors are less analyzable than single-core ones due to the interferences between different tasks when accessing hardware shared resources. As a result, estimating a meaningful Worst-Case Execution Time (WCET) estimation - i.e. to compute an upper bound of the application's execution time - becomes extremely difficult, if not even impossible, because the execution time of a task may change depending on the other threads running at the same time. This makes the WCET of a task dependent on the set of inter-task interferences introduced by the co-running tasks. Providing a WCET estimation independent from the other tasks (time composability property) is a key requirement in hard real-time systems. This thesis proposes a new multi-core processor design in which time composability is achieved, hence enabling the use of multi-cores in hard real-time systems. With our proposals the WCET estimation of a HRT is independent from the other co-running tasks. To that end, we design a multi-core processor in which the maximum delay a request from a Hard Real-time Task (HRT), accessing a hardware shared resource can suffer due to other tasks is bounded: our processor guarantees that a request to a shared resource cannot be delayed longer than a given Upper Bound Delay (UBD). In addition, the UBD allows identifying the impact that different processor configurations may have on the WCET by determining the sensitivity of a HRT to different resource allocations. This thesis proposes an off-line task allocation algorithm (called IA3: Interference-Aware Allocation Algorithm), that allocates tasks in a task set based on the HRT's sensitivity to different resource allocations. As a result the hardware shared resources used by HRTs are minimized, by allowing Non Hard Real-time Tasks (NHRTs) to use the rest of resources. Overall, our proposals provide analyzability for the HRTs allowing NHRTs to be executed into the same chip without any effect on the HRTs. The previous first two proposals of this thesis focused on supporting the execution of multi-programmed workloads with mixed-criticality levels (composed of HRTs and NHRTs). Higher performance could be achieved by implementing multi-threaded applications. As a first step towards supporting hard real-time parallel applications, this thesis proposes a new hardware/software approach to guarantee a predictable execution of software pipelined parallel programs. This thesis also investigates a solution to verify the timing correctness of HRTs without requiring any modification in the core design: we design a hardware unit which is interfaced with the processor and integrated into a functional-safety aware methodology. This unit monitors the execution time of a block of instructions and it detects if it exceeds the WCET. Concretely, we show how to handle timing faults on a real industrial automotive platform.La creciente demanda de nuevas funcionalidades en los sistemas empotrados de tiempo real actuales y futuros en industrias como la automovilística y la de aviación, está impulsando un incremento en el rendimiento necesario en los actuales procesadores empotrados. Los procesadores multi-núcleo son una solución eficiente para obtener un mayor rendimiento ya que aumentan el rendimiento por vatio, manteniendo el diseño del núcleo simple. Por otra parte, los procesadores multi-núcleo también permiten ejecutar cargas de trabajo con niveles de tiempo real mixtas (formadas por tareas de tiempo real duro y laxo así como tareas sin requerimientos de tiempo real), maximizando así la utilización de los recursos de procesador y garantizando el bajo consumo de energía. Sin embargo, a pesar los beneficios mencionados anteriormente, los actuales procesadores multi-núcleo son menos analizables que los de un solo núcleo debido a las interferencias surgidas cuando múltiples tareas acceden simultáneamente a los recursos compartidos del procesador. Como resultado, la estimación del peor tiempo de ejecución (conocido como WCET) - es decir, una cota superior del tiempo de ejecución de la aplicación - se convierte en extremadamente difícil, si no imposible, porque el tiempo de ejecución de una tarea puede cambiar dependiendo de las otras tareas que se estén ejecutando concurrentemente. Determinar una estimación del WCET independiente de las otras tareas es un requisito clave en los sistemas empotrados de tiempo real duro. Esta tesis propone un nuevo diseño de procesador multi-núcleo en el que el tiempo de ejecución de las tareas se puede componer, lo que permitirá el uso de procesadores multi-núcleo en los sistemas de tiempo real duro. Para ello, diseñamos un procesador multi-núcleo en el que la máxima demora que puede sufrir una petición de una tarea de tiempo real duro (HRT) para acceder a un recurso hardware compartido debido a otras tareas está acotado, tiene un límite superior (UBD). Además, UBD permite identificar el impacto que las diferentes posibles configuraciones del procesador pueden tener en el WCET, mediante la determinación de la sensibilidad en la variación del tiempo de ejecución de diferentes reservas de recursos del procesador. Esta tesis propone un algoritmo estático de reserva de recursos (llamado IA3), que asigna tareas a núcleos en función de dicha sensibilidad. Como resultado los recursos compartidos del procesador usados por tareas HRT se reducen al mínimo, permitiendo que las tareas sin requerimiento de tiempo real (NHRTs) puedas beneficiarse del resto de recursos. Por lo tanto, las propuestas presentadas en esta tesis permiten el análisis del WCET para tareas HRT, permitiendo así mismo la ejecución de tareas NHRTs en el mismo procesador multi-núcleo, sin que estas tengan ningún efecto sobre las tareas HRT. Las propuestas presentadas anteriormente se centran en el soporte a la ejecución de múltiples cargas de trabajo con diferentes niveles de tiempo real (HRT y NHRTs). Sin embargo, un mayor rendimiento puede lograrse mediante la transformación una tarea en múltiples sub-tareas paralelas. Esta tesis propone una nueva técnica, con soporte del procesador y del sistema operativo, que garantiza una ejecución analizable del modelo de ejecución paralela software pipelining. Esta tesis también investiga una solución para verificar la corrección del WCET de HRT sin necesidad de ninguna modificación en el diseño de la base: un nuevo componente externo al procesador se conecta a este sin necesidad de modificarlo. Esta nueva unidad monitorea el tiempo de ejecución de un bloque de instrucciones y detecta si se excede el WCET. Esta unidad permite detectar fallos de sincronización en sistemas de computación utilizados en automóviles

    Hill-Climbing SMT Processor Resource Distribution

    The key to high performance in SMT processors lies in optimizing the shared resources distribution among simultaneously executing threads. Existing resource distribution techniques optimize performance only indirectly. They infer potential performance bottlenecks by observing indicators, like instruction occupancy or cache miss count, and take actions to try to alleviate them. While the corrective actions are designed to improve performance, their actual performance impact is not known since end performance is never monitored. Consequently, opportunities for performance gains are lost whenever the corrective actions do not effectively address the actual performance bottlenecks occurring in the SMT processor pipeline. In this dissertation, we propose a different approach to SMT processor resource distribution that optimizes end performance directly. Our approach observes the impact that resource distribution decisions have on performance at runtime, and feeds this information back to the resource distribution mechanisms to improve future decisions. By successively applying and evaluating different resource distributions, our approach tries to learn the best distribution over time. Because we perform learning on-line, learning time is crucial. We develop a hill-climbing SMT processor resource distribution technique that efficiently learns the best resource distribution by following the performance gradient within the resource distribution space. This dissertation makes three contributions within the context of learning-based SMT processor resource distribution. First, we characterize and quantify the time-varying performance behavior of SMT processors. This analysis provides understanding of the behavior and guides the design of our hill-climbing algorithm. Second, we present a hill-climbing SMT processor resource distribution technique that performs learning on-line. The performance evaluation of our approach shows a 11.4% gain over ICOUNT, 11.5% gain over FLUSH, and 2.8% gain over DCRA across a large set of 63 multiprogrammed workloads. Third, we compare existing resource distribution techniques to an ideal learning-based technique that performs learning off-line to show the potential performance of the existing techniques. This limit study identifies the performance bottleneck of the existing techniques, showing that the performance of ICOUNT, FLUSH, and DCRA is 13.2%, 13.5%, and 6.6%, respectively, lower than the ideal performance. Our hill-climbing based resource distribution, however, handles most of the bottlenecks of the existing techniques properly, achieving 4.1% lower performance than the ideal case

    High Performance Web Servers: A Study In Concurrent Programming Models

    With the advent of commodity large-scale multi-core computers, the performance of software running on these computers has become a challenge to researchers and enterprise developers. While academic research and industrial products have moved in the direction of writing scalable and highly available services using distributed computing, single machine performance remains an active domain, one which is far from saturated. This thesis selects an archetypal software example and workload in this domain, and describes software characteristics affecting performance. The example is highly-parallel web-servers processing a static workload. Particularly, this work examines concurrent programming models in the context of high-performance web-servers across different architectures — threaded (Apache, Go and μKnot), event-driven (Nginx, μServer) and staged (WatPipe) — compared with two static workloads in two different domains. The two workloads are a Zipf distribution of file sizes representing a user session pulling an assortment of many small and a few large files, and a 50KB file representing chunked streaming of a large audio or video file. Significant effort is made to fairly compare eight web-servers by carefully tuning each via their adjustment parameters. Tuning plays a significant role in workload-specific performance. The two domains are no disk I/O (in-memory file set) and medium disk I/O. The domains are created by lowering the amount of RAM available to the web-server from 4GB to 2GB, forcing files to be evicted from the file-system cache. Both domains are also restricted to 4 CPUs. The primary goal of this thesis is to examine fundamental performance differences between threaded and event-driven concurrency models, with particular emphasis on user-level threading models. Additionally, a secondary goal of the work is to examine high-performance software under restricted hardware environments. Over-provisioned hardware environments can mask architectural and implementation shortcomings in software – the hypothesis in this work is that restricting resources stresses the application, bringing out important performance characteristics and properties. Experimental results for the given workload show that memory pressure is one of the most significant factors for the degradation of web-server performance, because it forces both the onset and amount of disk I/O. With an ever increasing need to support more content at faster rates, a web-server relies heavily on in-memory caching of files and related content. In fact, personal and small business web-servers are even run on minimal hardware, like the Raspberry Pi, with only 1GB of RAM and a small SD card for the file system. Therefore, understanding behaviour and performance in restricted contexts should be a normal aspect of testing a web server (and other software systems)

    Virtualization of Micro-architectural Components Using Software Solutions

    Cloud computing has become a dominant computing paradigm in the information technology industry due to its flexibility and efficiency in resource sharing and management. The key technology that enables cloud computing is virtualization. Essential requirements in a virtualized system where several virtual machines (VMs) run on a same physical machine include performance isolation and predictability. To enforce these properties, the virtualization software (called the hypervisor) must find a way to divide physical resources (e.g., physical memory, processor time) of the system and allocate them to VMs with respect to the amount of virtual resources defined for each VM. However, modern hardware have complex architectures and some microarchitectural-level resources such as processor caches, memory controllers, interconnects cannot be divided and allocated to VMs. They are globally shared among all VMs which compete for their use, leading to contention. Therefore, performance isolation and predictability are compromised. In this thesis, we propose software solutions for preventing unpredictability in performance due to micro-architectural components. The first contribution is called Kyoto, a solution to the cache contention issue, inspired by the polluters pay principle. A VM is said to pollute the cache if it provokes significant cache replacements which impact the performance of other VMs. Henceforth, using the Kyoto system, the provider can encourage cloud users to book pollution permits for their VMs. The second contribution addresses the problem of efficiently virtualizing NUMA machines. The major challenge comes from the fact that the hypervisor regularly reconfigures the placement of a VM over the NUMA topology. However, neither guest operating systems (OSs) nor system runtime libraries (e.g., HotSpot) are designed to consider NUMA topology changes at runtime, leading end user applications to unpredictable performance. We presents eXtended Para-Virtualization (XPV), a new principle to efficiently virtualize a NUMA architecture. XPV consists in revisiting the interface between the hypervisor and the guest OS, and between the guest OS and system runtime libraries so that they can dynamically take into account NUMA topology changes

    Resource-aware Programming in a High-level Language - Improved performance with manageable effort on clustered MPSoCs

    Bis 2001 bedeutete Moores und Dennards Gesetz eine Verdoppelung der Ausführungszeit alle 18 Monate durch verbesserte CPUs. Heute ist Nebenläufigkeit das dominante Mittel zur Beschleunigung von Supercomputern bis zu mobilen Geräten. Allerdings behindern neuere Phänomene wie "Dark Silicon" zunehmend eine weitere Beschleunigung durch Hardware. Um weitere Beschleunigung zu erreichen muss sich auch die Soft­ware mehr ihrer Hardware Resourcen gewahr werden. Verbunden mit diesem Phänomen ist eine immer heterogenere Hardware. Supercomputer integrieren Beschleuniger wie GPUs. Mobile SoCs (bspw. Smartphones) integrieren immer mehr Fähigkeiten. Spezialhardware auszunutzen ist eine bekannte Methode, um den Energieverbrauch zu senken, was ein weiterer wichtiger Aspekt ist, welcher mit der reinen Geschwindigkeit abgewogen werde muss. Zum Beispiel werden Supercomputer auch nach "Performance pro Watt" bewertet. Zur Zeit sind systemnahe low-level Programmierer es gewohnt über Hardware nachzudenken, während der gemeine high-level Programmierer es vorzieht von der Plattform möglichst zu abstrahieren (bspw. Cloud). "High-level" bedeutet nicht, dass Hardware irrelevant ist, sondern dass sie abstrahiert werden kann. Falls Sie eine Java-Anwendung für Android entwickeln, kann der Akku ein wichtiger Aspekt sein. Irgendwann müssen aber auch Hochsprachen resourcengewahr werden, um Geschwindigkeit oder Energieverbrauch zu verbessern. Innerhalb des Transregio "Invasive Computing" habe ich an diesen Problemen gearbeitet. In meiner Dissertation stelle ich ein Framework vor, mit dem man Hochsprachenanwendungen resourcengewahr machen kann, um so die Leistung zu verbessern. Das könnte beispielsweise erhöhte Effizienz oder schnellerer Ausführung für das System als Ganzes bringen. Ein Kerngedanke dabei ist, dass Anwendungen sich nicht selbst optimieren. Stattdessen geben sie alle Informationen an das Betriebssystem. Das Betriebssystem hat eine globale Sicht und trifft Entscheidungen über die Resourcen. Diesen Prozess nennen wir "Invasion". Die Aufgabe der Anwendung ist es, sich an diese Entscheidungen anzupassen, aber nicht selbst welche zu fällen. Die Herausforderung besteht darin eine Sprache zu definieren, mit der Anwendungen Resourcenbedingungen und Leistungsinformationen kommunizieren. So eine Sprache muss ausdrucksstark genug für komplexe Informationen, erweiterbar für neue Resourcentypen, und angenehm für den Programmierer sein. Die zentralen Beiträge dieser Dissertation sind: Ein theoretisches Modell der Resourcen-Verwaltung, um die Essenz des resourcengewahren Frameworks zu beschreiben, die Korrektheit der Entscheidungen des Betriebssystems bezüglich der Bedingungen einer Anwendung zu begründen und zum Beweis meiner Thesen von Effizienz und Beschleunigung in der Theorie. Ein Framework und eine Übersetzungspfad resourcengewahrer Programmierung für die Hochsprache X10. Zur Bewertung des Ansatzes haben wir Anwendungen aus dem High Performance Computing implementiert. Eine Beschleunigung von 5x konnte gemessen werden. Ein Speicherkonsistenzmodell für die X10 Programmiersprache, da dies ein notwendiger Schritt zu einer formalen Semantik ist, die das theoretische Modell und die konkrete Implementierung verknüpft. Zusammengefasst zeige ich, dass resourcengewahre Programmierung in Hoch\-sprachen auf zukünftigen Architekturen mit vielen Kernen mit vertretbarem Aufwand machbar ist und die Leistung verbessert

    Intelligent Management of Inter-Thread Synchronization Dependencies for Concurrent Programs.

    Power dissipation limits and design complexity have made the microprocessor industry less successful in improving the performance of monolithic processors, even though semiconductor technology continues to scale. Consequently, chip multiprocessors (CMPs) have become a standard for all ranges of computing from cellular phones to high-performance servers. As sufficient thread level parallelism (TLP) is necessary to exploit the computational power provided by CMPs, most performance-aware programmers need to parallelize their programs. For shared memory multi-threaded programs, synchronization mechanisms such as mutexes, barriers, and condition variables, are used to enforce the threads to interact with each other in the way the programmers intended. However, employing synchronization operations in both correct and efficient way at the same time is extremely difficult, and there have been trade-offs between programmability and efficiency of using synchronizations. This thesis proposes a collection of works that increase the programmability and efficiency of concurrent programs by intelligently managing the synchronization operations. First, we focus on mutex locks and unlocks. Many concurrency bug detection tools and automated bug fixers rely on the precise identification of critical sections guarded by lock/unlock operations. We suggest a practical lock/unlock pairing mechanism that combines static analysis with dynamic instrumentation to identify critical sections in POSIX multi-threaded C/C++ programs. Second, we present Dynamic Core Boosting (DCB) to accelerate critical paths in multi-thread programs. Inter-thread dependencies through synchronizations form critical paths. These critical paths are major performance bottlenecks for concurrent programs, and they are exacerbated by workload imbalances in performance asymmetric CMPs. DCB coordinates its compiler, runtime subsystem, and architecture to mitigates such performance bottlenecks.
