A trustworthy mobile agent infrastructure for network management
Despite several advantages inherent in mobile-agent-based approaches to network management as compared to traditional SNMP-based approaches, industry is reluctant to adopt the mobile agent paradigm as a replacement for the existing manager-agent model; the management community requires an evolutionary, rather than a revolutionary, use of mobile agents. Furthermore, security for distributed management is a major concern; agent-based management systems inherit the security risks of mobile agents. We have developed a Java-based mobile agent infrastructure for network management that enables the safe integration of mobile agents with the SNMP protocol. The security of the system has been evaluated under agent to agent-platform and agent to agent attacks and has proved trustworthy in the performance of network management tasks
SecuCode: Intrinsic PUF Entangled Secure Wireless Code Dissemination for Computational RFID Devices
The simplicity of deployment and perpetual operation of energy harvesting
devices provides a compelling proposition for a new class of edge devices for
the Internet of Things. In particular, Computational Radio Frequency
Identification (CRFID) devices are an emerging class of battery-free,
computational, sensing enhanced devices that harvest all of their energy for
operation. Despite wireless connectivity and powering, secure wireless firmware
updates remains an open challenge for CRFID devices due to: intermittent
powering, limited computational capabilities, and the absence of a supervisory
operating system. We present, for the first time, a secure wireless code
dissemination (SecuCode) mechanism for CRFIDs by entangling a device intrinsic
hardware security primitive Static Random Access Memory Physical Unclonable
Function (SRAM PUF) to a firmware update protocol. The design of SecuCode: i)
overcomes the resource-constrained and intermittently powered nature of the
CRFID devices; ii) is fully compatible with existing communication protocols
employed by CRFID devices in particular, ISO-18000-6C protocol; and ii) is
built upon a standard and industry compliant firmware compilation and update
method realized by extending a recent framework for firmware updates provided
by Texas Instruments. We build an end-to-end SecuCode implementation and
conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate standards compliance, evaluate
performance and security.Comment: Accepted to the IEEE Transactions on Dependable and Secure Computin
On Making Emerging Trusted Execution Environments Accessible to Developers
New types of Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) architectures like TrustLite
and Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX) are emerging. They bring new features
that can lead to innovative security and privacy solutions. But each new TEE
environment comes with its own set of interfaces and programming paradigms,
thus raising the barrier for entry for developers who want to make use of these
TEEs. In this paper, we motivate the need for realizing standard TEE interfaces
on such emerging TEE architectures and show that this exercise is not
straightforward. We report on our on-going work in mapping GlobalPlatform
standard interfaces to TrustLite and SGX.Comment: Author's version of article to appear in 8th Internation Conference

Kevoree Modeling Framework (KMF): Efficient modeling techniques for runtime use
The creation of Domain Specific Languages(DSL) counts as one of the main
goals in the field of Model-Driven Software Engineering (MDSE). The main
purpose of these DSLs is to facilitate the manipulation of domain specific
concepts, by providing developers with specific tools for their domain of
expertise. A natural approach to create DSLs is to reuse existing modeling
standards and tools. In this area, the Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF) has
rapidly become the defacto standard in the MDSE for building Domain Specific
Languages (DSL) and tools based on generative techniques. However, the use of
EMF generated tools in domains like Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Computing
or Models@Runtime reaches several limitations. In this paper, we identify
several properties the generated tools must comply with to be usable in other
domains than desktop-based software systems. We then challenge EMF on these
properties and describe our approach to overcome the limitations. Our approach,
implemented in the Kevoree Modeling Framework (KMF), is finally evaluated
according to the identified properties and compared to EMF.Comment: ISBN 978-2-87971-131-7; N° TR-SnT-2014-11 (2014
